come together is a fine cover but the only good way to listen to it is through the video. The video performance elevates the song to something worth remembering.

I disagree seeing how 3 of the songs are songs that we've heard before in some form (Starlight, The Toy and Behind The Mask), 4 are songs that have already been released (Got The Hots, Carousel, CGOOTR and Sunset Driver), 2 were already leaked and only 2 are actually new. Bad 25 on the other hand had 6 songs that were brand new we don't talk about the remix with Pitbull so I'd say that's the Estate's best release.

Ok but to be fair I'm not crazy about those 6 new tracks on Bad25, bar I'm so blue, I love that one. Then there are the remixes and the 2 foreign language version songs of a track I already dislike to begin with. Not stoked about it :)

I think this comparison is not fair as the Bad sessions are the most prolific in MJs career. If you look back at it, we've gotten almost 15 outtakes from the Bad sessions over the years.
Thriller might not have as many and, unfortunately, part of it ended up leaking.

Even if there's nothing remaining in the vault from the Thriller era that doesn't mean the Estate had to go for songs from the Off The Wall period, they could've gone for something that was, y'know, at least from the Thriller days lmao.

And also I believe now that there are more releasable songs within the vault that we just don't know about, who could've known Who Do You Know was releasable and was even considered for 2 albums? Maybe there's more songs from the Thriller era that's being held on for Thriller 50.

Oh, I'm not defending the inclusion of CGOTR. Hell no to that.
I was more about the "6 brand new tracks on Bad 25" talk. It's MJs most prolific period and I bet they can do another complete album with just Bad outtakes.
 
the songs on disc 2 of Bad 25 are amazing, tbh, all these songs sound like they could be from another album altogether, minus streetwalker

Ok, so i'm lazy and the only thing i read from here is "including Come Together on HIStory"

The difference between that, and including CGOTR on Thriller 40, is that Come Together is actually good. :p

I would compare it to For All Time and claiming that's a Thriller outtake. But that's not as bothersome to me as the Estate saying the Paul Anka tracks are from 1983 when they're really from 1980...

I'd actually begun working on my own Thriller Demo/Outtakes project awhile back but kinda got busy with other stuff, so this will go a long way in maybe picking that little personal project up again and fill the rest of the CD running time.

I have my own MP3 MJ project going, but I won't be including the leaked songs. I still suspect waiting will allow time for them to release.

Funny thing about the project is I stopped working on it about 8 years ago lol.

I'm gonna be honest, i thought the same thing as you did until this month, i don't know why, but i started listening more and more to the CD 2 of Bad 25th, and man, now i'm thinking "holy hell i've been sleeping on this track."

from what I’ve seen and heard, not really, It’s probably the weakest bad 25 outtake, but it’s still good, although I prefer the others

Tbh I just think The Ultimate Collection was a bad idea, way back then. It was a big retirement anthology release for an artist who wasn't retired, it just came out at the wrong time. MJ wanted to work and was just desperate to be rid of Sony and the Motolla Administration.

Meanwhile, CGOOTR does belong, but it belongs on Disc 3. It was a genuine rarity and overdubbed so it is a 1982 track in the most technical way. It is hard to come by. But again, they never promised only unreleased unleaked stuff on it, and including it somewhere still makes sense.

3. They've been mixing and matching eras, that's nothing new.

The estate has always been stingy with songs. MJs last album had 16 songs, everything they've done has just about been half of that. If they choose to put a B Side on the record to add to the illusion, then so be it. 6 new songs only like Bad 25, or 6 new Songs and another extra songs, we can choose what we prefer.

Their favorite number seems to be six. The only one that broke that formula was Xscape with eight tracks.
 
Loving everyone's take on this release. Here's mine:

Track #1 - Starlight ( This has been leaked for years and by being the original version of Thriller it is an important demo (early version). It definitely belongs on this anniversary release)

Track #2 - Got The Hots ( While not overjoyed, I’m fine with this one because it never found a home on a widespread physical release.)

Track #3 - Who Do You Know ( I actually correctly guessed this one back when the anniversary release was first announced. I’m really excited to hear it!)

Track #4 - Carousel ( This one seems like a waste at first, but Bad25 included tracks from the 2001 editions on the bonus disc so it’s not really a surprise even with it being spoiled with Youtube algorithms)

Track #5 - Behind the Mask demo (This one I’m excited for even if it’s just Michael doing all the parts acapella, I’ve been wanting to own this ever since the 2010 remix release)

Track #6 - Can’t Get Outta The Rain ( A wasted spot in my opinion that has nothing to do with Thriller. Everyone knows this as the outro from the Wiz. I know there has been clarification on what ties to this to Thriller but for me this is the most disappointing choice and there’s no excuse for it.)

Track #7 - The Toy (Good choice, looking forward to hearing this one.)

Track #8 - Sunset Driver ( A wasted spot previously released on the Ultimate Collection that has always sounded like an Off the Wall outtake. This one irks me especially because if they were going to draw from the Ultimate Collection then Bad25 should’ve included “Cheater” instead of Pitbull remix #2 or whatever)

Track #9 - What a Lovely Way To Go ( This one is probably what the fans are most excited for although it feels kind of randomly thrown in here after hearing Michael describe it as something he’d written before Off the Wall. However, I know Michael’s entire catalog has been him “startin somethin” and shelving it then bringing it back out again and again until it can find a home on an album.)

Track #10 - She’s Trouble ( It has also been leaked for years, but never officially released so I think it deserves this spot.)


Verdict: We haven’t had a proper anniversary release for more than 10 years. While it is nice to have a little something new, this release comes off just a bit lazy. If they planned to crowd it with so many previously released tracks, then they could’ve made the tracklist longer to fit a few more pieces of unheard material This could’ve been so much better by including known tracks like Hot Street and Nightline (They could’ve easily been track #6 and #7 and fit the 10-track limit). The tracks here are so obscure that this type of material would really only be appreciated by hardcore fans (imo) and they should have known that this would disappoint.

they are all just the same old trash though
 
I'm kinda curious if the expanded digital release will be available for purchase as FLAC anywhere or just the basic high end MP3? Of course hoping for FLAC, but I haven't seen that option available too widespread.

Literally HDtracks and Qobuz are just some of the services that will allow you to purchase it, and Deezer and Tidal (Ew) will also let you download it in flac.
