Michael Jackson’s Thriller 3D

Re: Thriller 3D just premiered in LONDON!!

Ghosts deserves a better treatment imo, I mean it was shot 14 years after Thriller and they could achieve a better remaster..

(Still hoping the third project will be a Blu-ray release of all short films btw.)

Re: Thriller 3D just premiered in LONDON!!

I was at the event and loved every second! Really cool evening in London!
Thriller looked like it was filmed in 2017 it was that clear!

Love the free t shirt and bag too ?

Re: Thriller 3D just premiered in LONDON!!

I sense a home video release from the estate with VHS quality short films and one HD or 4K piece. Thriller.

I'm afraid that will be the third and final announcement. SMH. If that happens they would also include APOM HD from the Spike Lee documentary and the music videos from Moonwalker film which is not too bad if it's a 4K upgrade

I missed the t-shirt and bag. Was that from the after party (wasn't able to attend that)?

Did manage to grab one of the 7ft vinyl posters though... They were throwing them all away about 30 minutes after 😖

Guys there was already a Thriller 3D thread. can we please ensure we post in related topics rather than creating a new one's as this makes the MJN&D section so much more messy.

Thread merged.

Cheers

That would be stupid. I wouldn't buy if they released that. They should make a release that includes at least all the Thriller era short films in HD and making-of Thriller.

Ironic they show the Ghosts short film when two-thirds of the songs they didn't even think to include on the Scream album, one which undoubtedly fits a halloween theme and the other undoubtedly fits the 'most electrifying and danceable tracks' perspective.

It`s just another case for not reading what they plan. Obviously Sream is the Music from the animated Halloween-Special

and they stated:

Another Jackson short film, the 40-minute “Ghosts,” released in 1996, could be updated for new audiences.

I have the making of 'Thriller' on vhs - which I still enjoy watching. Only the colour is too dark. If they could fix up the picture and release it on a digital format, I'd be happy :) I especially love seeing the dance rehearsal, and clips of Motown 25, 'Beat It' and 'Can You Feel It'!

The Victory Tour Toronto has over 1 million views on YT lmao...I doubt the Estate hasn't noticed. the interest in that show is high, considering it's a Jacksons show. if only they could release it on Blu ray for Thriller 35...they still need to announce how/when this is going to be released.

To have an official DVD or Blu Ray of Thriller with the making would be very nice.. THAT would reach far outside of the 'Collectors' if released that way.. They could have a CD/DVD combo with extra art and just a DVD version..

And whhhy couldn't they have included these songs in the CBS Special over some of the ones they chose??? The point still stands. And I did read their statement that's where I quoted from. No mention of it being the sound track to anything from what I saw, even if that is the case.

That is 100% NOT gonna happen for reasons that have already been explained.

well my thought on this is.. releasing soundtracks before a film is counter productive and stupid.. To state it is the soundtrack if it is would take away from the show big time. Usually people fall in love with the film first than go buy the soundtrack.. Not the other way around!! IF this is a soundtrack they are releasing this wrong, should come out AFTER it airs. OR they are releasing it not stating it's the soundtrack until after it airs.. but than again, why name the soundtrack something totally different than the show?

Why does it matter when a soundtrack is released? I'm not sure I understand. Quite often movie soundtracks will be made available prior to the film being in theatres.

I can't believe the Estate have chosen to show Ghosts on a big screen and haven't used the film reels - or are we to assume Michael took a VHS copy of Ghosts to Cannes, Sydney etc. in 1996? lol. And the Wyclef remix of Blood on the Dancefloor? FML

^ Well more so promotion of said soundtracks are often (and should) not pushed until the film is released specifically because it gives the magic away.. Of course this is somewhat different considering all these songs are already out.. Being introduced to songs in the film with the emotional aspect that the film brings with the song is what sells the song to its fullest potential.

There is a reason why MJ album sales spike when music videos are released.. ie. Thriller spike in Dec 1983-1984..

Then the moment we were all there for, GHOSTS!!! Seeing it on the big screen was so much better! I was taking in every detail, not that I haven’t watched this for two decades already, but I wanted to savour the experience. As expected, we were cheering Michael on when it came to 2Bad, one of his best routines ever! Taking a scan around the room, you could see there were people who had not seen Ghosts before and they were clearly impressed! That’s our Michael! – This is what it’s about and this is why Ghosts needs a public release on DVD, although I hear there are apparently issues with the Kingdom setup as to why they can’t.

Following the credits, the screen went blue instructing us to put on the 3D glasses, naturally we mimicked the beginning of 2000 Watts.. “You may now apply, you 3D glass-es….as we prepare to proceed.”

The disclaimer came on the screen followed by the ‘Michael Jackson’s Thriller’ which came floating out of the screen towards us. The short film looked incredible in 3D, it felt like you were watching it being filmed right in front of your eyes, Michael literally popped out the screen and the colour had been enhanced incredibly. What was also noticeable was that the audio had been changed. The Bass line was slightly funkier and more compressed and other elements of the instrumentation had been stripped out. It was different, but would have been better if they’d left the instrumentation alone as neither Michael or Rod are here to approve the change and we know Quincy is not in the picture with the Estate.

Then when you think it’s all over, at the end of the credits, the zombie’s eyes pop out of the screen as neon green. There was again, massive applause.

because it gives the magic away

??

To get back on topic though, there is a lot of discussion on Twitter today about the drastic change to the music in Thriller 3D. I'm quite concerned about this. The music of Michael Jackson being tampered with by someone with zero authority to do it, as far as I'm concerned. If the change is as bad as some have suggested it renders this whole project null to me. Akin to what happened with the Michael album.

Another Twitter user claims that Branca confirmed no home release of Thriller 3D.

This is why, future concert releases need to be put toward that era.

Messing around with the instrumentation? Is that what pez meant about the strings? NO!! They'll lose me as a customer. :(

Someone recorded the audio last night and uploaded to YouTube. Although this has clearly been recorded on someone's phone from their pocket, something does sound really 'off' with it. It didn't sound right to me, at all.

we have to keep in mind that it was a crappy recording. but yes, you can definitely hear that something is wrong in there and I think and hope that one speaker was f***d up. either that or they ruined Thriller.

According to the audio producer, there was either a problem with the speakers or the wrong files were used and the sound hasn't been altered on the final product, just enhanced.

As each 'sound' was isolated to individual speakers, it would make sense that aspects of the sound were missing due to technical issues.

Yes, however, apparently people who went to the Toronto screening had the same experience with the audio. Seems hard to imagine that speakers failed in 2 top-notch theaters. So there's probably some other reason for it.

I hope they have not changes the music too much...

And I really hope it is not true it will not be released on DVD/Blu-Ray....

I hope they will include the original audio too for the home release. You could choose the one you want. Was there any changes in actual short film?

The engineer on Thriller 3D confirmed nothing was changed. Thanks to Respect77 for gathering these tweets.

I think you are confused. There was no new recording of audio. In regards to elements missing, each theater has its own system.

I can tell you that there is no difference between the new and previous version of the video from what pertains to music.

Hi Nima, absolutely no production/instrumentation decisions where changed or made. We worked with the master tapes we received.

100% confirmed the issue is in the theaters, delivery, etc. These are not the mixes we created.

getting to the bottom of it. 2 options: theater speakers are not working properly or...

there is no production on this! It's just a new audio mix in Atmos, 7.1. 5.1. Nothing was added or taken out.

Read these next ones from bottom to top!

...edit the mix in a different form to the video. Nobody produces a multitrack for the album and another for video.

there is no "mulitrack" of the audio of the video. That's is not how videos are made. You produce a song, and, if needed..

again, that doesn't exist. The video was put probably put together with a stereo tape edited in the form in the video.

it's clear your don't know the technical terminology. Raw multitrack is different than mix stems, different than a mix

the original vision of Michael, Quincy Jones, John Landis and Bruce Swedien was respected at all times.

no mix stems exist. What existed was the multitrack, the album mix and the video mix. Nothing else exists.

Are you sure? Can you give a link? Branca was asked about it at Q&A and he was told not to answer. Maybe they just don't want to announce it yet.

I was at the screening in Toronto. All I can say is that I really hope that they release it. Thriller 3D is unbelievably good on the big scream with the great sound. John Landis was there as well as Branca and the director of the Making of Thriller. Branca was actually asked if they are going to release Thriller 3D. I was seating directly behind the row reserved for Branca and other guests and saw clearly that they motioned to him not to answer. He dodged the questions. He was also asked about Dangerous 25 and joked that it is a bit too late, may be Dangerous 30 some day. He was asked if the Estate plans to restore (probably in 3D) other material. He mentioned "German concert" which I guess in Munich and, to my delight, Ghosts.
To summarize, I think this is absolutely great that the Thriller is restored to the former glory. As to the 3D, there were moments where I though it was too much, but overall it looked practically perfect. I do hope that they release it.
And sorry for my quite broken English.

The work on Thriller 3D cost money and they will be looking to make profit. They cannot do that by exhibiting it at a coupe of film festivals and paying to run localised premiers around the world. There has to be a bigger plan for Thriller 3D. If it is true that they don't plan to release this on DVD/BluRay then I guess their plan must be to release in cinemas as a B-side to some other movie, or to distribute it to TV networks or perhaps more likely, streaming service like Netflix or amazon.
