For those of you that don't know, passport files are highly confidential. Some officials speculate government involvement in the Bush Administration, according to the media. Apparently the Bush Administration knew this happened, back in Jan. and said nothing and took no action. This is the second known major breach of his security. If the govt. is behind this, it will be like when the FBI was digging up dirt on civil rights leaders back in the 60's. I'm not going to speculate, but there's no reason this **** shouldn't have been told to him before. I'd be pissed even if it was John McCain or any other U.S. citizen. Someone tried 3 different times to dig up dirt on him to see what countries he visited.

(CNN) -- The State Department has confirmed a breach on Sen. Barack Obama's passport file.

Obama's campaign is asking for a complete investigation to find out who looked at Obama's passport file and why.

"This is an outrageous breach of security and privacy, even from an administration that has shown little regard for either over the last eight years," said Obama campaign spokesman Bill Burton in a statement.

"Our government's duty is to protect the private information of the American people, not use it for political purposes.

oh wow

that's just wrong

yeah, this happened to Bill Clinton when he was Governor and running for president. A special committee and investigation ensued. I'm sure it will happen now.

I just heard about it and I have to say, it's simply ridiculous. Obama deserves to have this fully investigated... how wrong.

It's going to be interesting to see how this all plays out.

What's even crazier is that the head of counselor affairs, recently retired was ambassador and assistant to Warren Christopher under the Clinton White House. There are all kinds of conspiracies being floated around. Also, if you look at what was going on with Obama's campaign during those dates - Jan 9, Feb 21, and March 14, you'll see that there are other clues to what may have been going on.

Oh my goodness, wow. I'm watching tv and many are claiming the brreach is connected to Clinton.

Wow, wow, wow. I want to see if this will play a major role in the coming primaries.

Im really hesitant to jump the gun and say it's a Clinton connection.

I mean, people are automatically gonna go to the quickest conclusion...who are obama's "enemies" that would want dirt on him...automatically would think...CLINTONS. thats not necessarily true.

I'm a Obama supporter but i would HOPE that this has nothing to do with the Clintons. I really really hope it doesn't. Cuz thats low down lol

By Bill Gertz - Two State Department employees were fired recently and a third disciplined for improperly accessing electronic personal data on Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama, Bush administration officials said today.

The officials, all contract workers, used their authorized computer network access to look up files within the department's consular affairs section, which processes and stores passport information, and read Mr. Obama's passport application and other records, in violation of department privacy rules, State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said.

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice was notified of the security breach today, and responded by saying security measures used to monitor records of high-profile Americans worked properly in detecting the breaches.

Mr. McCormack said the officials did not appear to be seeking information on behalf of any political candidate or party.

"As far as we can tell, in each of the three cases, it was imprudent curiosity," Mr. McCormack told The Washington Times.

A similar data breach took place in 1992 when State Department officials looked up data on presidential candidate Bill Clinton, in an attempt to find out information from the late 1960s, amid unfounded political campaign rumors that Mr. Clinton had sought to renounce his citizenship to dodge the draft during the Vietnam War while a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford.

That incident triggered a three-year investigation by a special prosecutor, who found that no laws were violated but officials exercised poor judgment. The 1992 search of Mr. Clinton's passport records was part of an effort to speed up Freedom of Information Act requests.

The Obama campaign denounced the accessing as "an outrageous breach of security and privacy, even from an Administration that has shown little regard for either over the last eight years."
Spokesman Bill Burton said "our government’s duty is to protect the private information of the American people, not use it for political purposes. This is a serious matter that merits a complete investigation, and we demand to know who looked at Senator Obama’s passport file, for what purpose, and why it took so long for them to reveal this security breach."

One administration official said the FBI is conducting a preliminary inquiry into the officials involved in the unauthorized access incidents related to Mr. Obama, Illinois Democrat. An FBI spokesman could not be reached for comment.

Government records of political candidates are tightly restricted because of concerns they could be used against candidates or the data could be altered as part of campaign dirty tricks.

In this case, it does not appear that records were copied or altered, Mr. McCormack said.

Passport application data includes such details as date and place of birth, e-mail address, mailing address, Social Security number, former names and travel plans. Mr. Obama was born in Honolulu in 1961 to a Kenyan father and American mother. He lived in Jakarta, Indonesia, from age six to 10.

Computer-monitoring equipment detected the activities by the three employees on Jan. 9, Feb. 21 and March 14, triggering alarms in each case, Mr. McCormack said.

Mr. McCormack said the officials accessed Mr. Obama's records "without a need to do so."

"In each case, we immediately contacted our contractors, their employer, and two were fired and one was disciplined," he said.

"We have strict rules restricting access to passport records," Mr. McCormack said.

Each time an employee logs on to the passport-records network, they are informed that the records are protected by the Privacy Act and are "available only on a need-to-know basis," he said. But no technical bar prevents a person, once he is in the system, from gaining access to Privacy Act-protected records to which he has no "need-to-know" rights.

But the network has an electronic monitoring system that is tripped when an employee accesses a record of a prominent person, like Mr. Obama. The alarm then triggers an inquiry into the incident, and "when the answer is not satisfactory, a supervisor is notified."

Such records can be accessed when it is part of an official inquiry, but in the case of Mr. Obama, it was not, Mr. McCormack said.

Asked whether a political candidate or party is behind the incidents, Mr. McCormack said: "None at this point in time that we have determined."

Mr. McCormack declined to provide the names of the employees or the contract, but he said they were hired by the contractor involved in producing, processing and approving passports.

"This is supposed to be a transaction between an individual and the government, and this is private information that we take a lot of steps to protect, and we take that responsibility seriously, not only for high profile individuals but for everybody," he said.

Mr. McCormack said the incidents took place at consular affairs facilities in the Washington area.

The dates of the breaches were January 9, February 21, and March 14 -- last Friday. Those correspond,to the New Hampshire primary, the Democratic debate in Texas, and the day the Reverend Jeremiah Wright story became major political news. February 21, and March 14 are also the dates that the Clinton campaign released the picture of Barack in ceremonial Somali clothing and on March 14th, a Clinton e-mail campaign bundler named Daphna Ziman sent out an email on March 14th (and printed by Wishire & Washington on March 17th) questioning Barack Obama on his name. Many feel that the questions were very ODD and came out of the blue with regards to his name and whereabouts. This information could only be collected from birth records, SSN, or a PASSPORT:

Ziman writes, "Never in any political race before this presidential “War of the media”, have I witnessed such a censorship of questions that ordinarily would be welcomed. The phenomenon of Barack H. Obama is not just that of a youth movement marching towards the most powerful job on the planet. Or the fact that an African American presidential candidate is inspiring the crowds of college graduates. But the fact that NO QUESTIONS ARE ALLOWED, or if a direct question is posed that there is an inevitable sigh of “How dare you ask?”"

Obama supporters would surely mention one word in rebuttal: "Rezko."

She goes on, "Well, I have many questions that I dare ask Barack (must not mention middle name or else) Obama.

1. Were you born Barry Dunham or Barack Hussein Obama?
2. Did you change your name? When? Where? And Why?
3. Was there a naming ceremony? Where? Under what circumstances?
4 .Why are we not allowed to mention your middle name?""
If these connections are true, this campaign just took a very nasty turn.

Now they're saying Clinton, Obama, and McCain's info was accessed. Apparently Clinton's info was breached in 2007, but it was a training mistake that was documented. However, the interesting thing is the same contractor accessed both Obama and McCain's info - but did not even attempt to access Clinton's.
