Quincy Jones reflects on Thriller (Billboard Magazine) ALL THREADS MERGED

It just means I think he's a jerk, with the way he conducts himself in public.

And he can talk about Michael's face all he wants, but stating that as the root of Michael's trouble isn't going to help Michael at all. The girl asked him what his advice to Michael would be in this situation and he goes off on a rant about his face? Real productive. The only thing that would have helped Michael there is if people would have told him he was beautiful when he was a child, not ugly.

I know what a "dick" means. You could have just called him a jerk.

Anyway, I agree with you about Q going after MJ's face. What does MJ's face have to do with anything? And how does Mike's face relate to race? Q should not be going there about race because the late great Tupacsaid it best about Q's children, "they are the United Nations". Q should have discussed what the hell happened to Tevin Campbell? Remember him? Q was sitting there making a blog about MJ claiming that MJ was lacking God and he could not handle fame, and his life seems to be a mess. However, what about Tevin Cambell? He was huge back in the day and then he disappeared. I do not see Q making a stink about him.

You have this man, like vncwilliams said, that still has the same career he had at the age of 11 while Q was running Vibe magazine and then sold it, had a record label and it was gone, did some CDs that no one touched. Part of his legacy is MJ. MJ is really the reason Q is still being talked about.

The thing that I wanna know is what is his explanation for what happened to the careers of Patti Austin (who lost a lot of weight), James Ingram, Tamia (now known to be the wife of b-ball player Grant Hill and suffers from MS) and Tevin Campbell (now known for being a trianwreck and a semi tragedy). Yet, this man talks about Michael, Michael, Michael.

i would slow down and not judge anyone i personaly don't know!
i don't want to make the same mistake that most of this planet population makes in Michaels regards.

by the way chack this out: http://www.sohood.com/1/content/view/3258/69/

human.

The thing is that those that misjudge MJ do it largely by believing rumours, allegations etc about MJ, they largely ignore the facts even when they are presented to them. The difference here is that the stuff been said about Q are based on facts; Q did say these horrible things about MJ! Also what Q is saying about Thriller is simply bias! He can't claim all the credit etc and ignore MJ/try to make it as though MJ doesn't deserve the credit to the album when at the same time the Fact that Q hasn't produced any other album even close to Thriller before or since suggests otherwise.

So no in this case Q is been discussed/judged based on Facts. I don't see any probs with that!

Herein lies the real reason for his bitterness. He tried to do it again without Michael and failed. His real big success has been with Michael. I wouldn't be surprised if he didn't contact MJ himself to ask for one more chance.

True! I also think that when Q is talking about 'the success may have come too soon and was too much etc' He really is talking about himself! He just doesn't realize it! Coz MJ continued doing his stuff. I think Q wasn't prepared for the success of Thriller, the only person who really believe that Thriller would be as massive as it is was MJ. Remember when he was telling peeps about doing a great album when each single was a hit etc even his brother thought MJ was been too ambitious!

Speak on it Forever_Mike.

There lies the fundamental difference between the two men - Michael wanted to make an album that would sell 100 million copies and Quincy felt that you cannot have that kind of aim.

Yep. And quincy had a nervous breakdown because he wasn't prepared while MJ simply cruised through and got on with ht as if nothing happened.:)

As for critics, they've been very supportive towards michael's albums after thriller except for BOTDF and Invincible because they arn't solid albums like Bad and Dangerous are.

To be correct, critics were rather cold to "Thriller", even worse to "Bad", let alone "Dangerous" and "HIStory". Also, there is no information that "Invincible" was less solid than other albums ("BOTDF" does not count, since it mostly remix album).

sorry: typo corrected; of course, it was meant to be "solid" instead of "sold".

Ok now i'm not that trusting of Quincy.. i just hope him and michael works things out.

Thriller is michael jackson's only album to have reached the 40 million mark. As for critics, they've been very supportive towards michael's albums after thriller except for BOTDF and Invincible because they arn't solid albums like Bad and Dangerous are.

you have no proof that thriller is the only one to reach 40 mill..MJ said his other albums reached thirty mill..it was more than ten years ago that dangerous reached thirty mill..what do u think happened in the last ten years? more than thriller reached forty mill...it took MJ less than two years to sell ten mill...all u have to do is add up the years..cus people collect aLL of MJ's albums as collectors items year after year..and that's a lot of people and a lot of albums. why do u wanna lean on the negative without solid proof? u sound like jones...u don't think certain things are possible..but MJ does....that's what makes MJ a true success. do u know that MJ has two diamond awards? that means the world music awards acknowledge that MJ is able to sell ten million albums worldwide in one year. just add up the figures..and u can see that more albums than thriller reached forty million. in the year that invincible was made...MJ had to set the record straight, himself cus of the lies being spread about invincible sales. he said that that year the album sold ten million copies. and he won a diamond award. now that's the year that american media lied and said that invincible sold only two million copies..which still is a milestone compared to other artists' sales. now that was seven years ago. now if u count ten million every ten years for seven years..that's seventy million. but, what if he isn't doing that kind of selling consistently....u can take a whole thirty million away from that...and still end up with forty million copies of invincible in this big world. and that's being conservative. and this is for the album that unbelieving fans say is the worst selling album. so where do u think that places 'dangerous'? MJ has already said that he's gone way north in comfort, and didn't want to give figures, during the bash..t interview(different interview from the interview where he gave figures for invincible, during a chat)....no media ever tells the truth about MJ's sales...so why do u wanna take the side of the media?

If this collaboration does take place it will serve two purpose's.

One: Two genius's working together making great music.

Two: To make Quincy eat his words.

If Quincy works with Michael again he will soon realize that Michael is just as dignified now as he was back in the 80's. He is still shy, gentle, loving and caring, full of ambition and ideas. Still can't keep from jiggin when he hears music and still loves to joke around. Still writing great songs, and still full of spirit. He now has three beautiful children and is still as spiritual now as he ever was.
Quincy is in for a shock if he really thought Michael had changed and he's going to feel pretty bad that he said those things even if he never admits it, and I reckon he would have a few sleepless nights reflecting on a few days work with Michael because unlike himself Michael never lost his dignity and he still knows how to forgive.

rita.gibson: maybe so, but according to Jones' book, as LadyBee mentioned, he knew Michael very well (and he has not changed since). So him saying what he was saying may bother more than just in case of Quincy was clueless ignorant bypasser.

Well in that case if he has a conscience, working with Michael should send him on a well deserved guilt trip.

I don't even know what to comment like.. I just don't like it!!!!!!!!

He was definitely talking about himself. This is the same guy who had to check into a mental hospital to get over the fame and the mega success of Thriller. Yet, he was the producer. You would assume that MJ would check himself into the psych ward, but Q did. That shows you something about Quincy.

He thinks he is the authority of what someone should go through in Hollywood. He talked about Whitney saying that there is "no hope for her" but Whitney did not check herself into any psych ward (that we know of). She all of those things to herself and still came out of it breezing. I bet youif Q went through the same thing, it wouldnot be so successful.

I just remembered something, on Black History Month, PBS is going to air a special all about Quincy.

ok now...i'd be afraid if i told whitney she had no hope. that's for God to decide...not quincy jones, who says he is all about a spiritual center.

u see...sound bytes like that, are dangerous... i realize that jones is a great success story...but that gives him no right to make such devastatingly monumental judgemental statements about another human being. that's why it's hard for me to see jones as having made the mj statements about himself..cus..if ur in the habit of judging people with that kind of monumental bigness, ala whitney....it's hard to stop. i wanna see whitney come back....and i believe she can...and she has a spiritual center too...so....and that doesn't mean she or anyone else with a spiritual center will not go thru great trials.

Michael Jackson is not a reliable source for album sales NOR is the media, However, the RIAA (Neilson Soundscan), CRIA, IFPI, BPI, ARIA, Oricon, Media control, are. I don't know what you're talking about in half that paragraph, you just seem to be babbling on and on trying to proove your point without using any facts from reliable sources.
The official stats for Michael Jackson's album sales worldwide are:
Off The Wall - 20 million copies (a lot of albums...Janet's best seller sold 19 - 20 million)
Thriller - 104 million copies (the next best selling album (ACDC's Back In Black) sits at 42 million)
Bad - 30 million copies
Dangerous - 30 million copies (one of the best selling of the 1990's)
HIStory - 18 million copies (2nd best selling double LP after The Wall by Pink Floyd)
BOTDF - 6 million copies (best selling remix album of all time, madonna's "You Can Dance" is #2)
Invincible - 8 million copies (a great deal of albums sold especially given the lack of long-term promotion)

There you have it, these are the facts, if you don't agree with them that's perfectly fine, I couldn't care less to be honest because you're opinion doesn't change the facts. AND if you don't believe me, e-mail billboard magazines Keith Caulfield. He's an expert that knows the facts. He'll give you the exact same figures as i've given you.

you say MJ is not a reliable source....just like me, you believe who you want. there's no proof of fact here. anyway, i'm done arguing with u. u have no proof about Caulfield. it's just his word. u r discounting that people buy music everyday. there's no skip in the days.

and u do care, cus u keep going back and forth with me.
and stop with ur high and mighty attitude, with use of the word 'facts' ur no better than me.

No it's not just his word or even his opinion at all actually. It's solid evidence from neilson soundscan that compiles album sales.

If we didn't have proof from things like this, then i could make claims like Thriller sold less than Invincible or Thriller only sold 1 million copies. You stating his albums all sold over 40 million copies at least is just as ignorant as me saying what i just did about thriller.

there have been reports that soundscan has been turned off, during periods....

and u can't account for every country in the world...and store chains that don't work with soundscan. u cannot possibly have more of a grip than i do on this...

the reality of it all is...i keep seeing fan reactions to fans buying MJ's material over and over. that's the only solid thing we can ever go on.

u know this..and so do i...

and frankly...why are u and i going on like this? MJ is doing fine...we should not be sweating the small stuff...and pretending like we are know it alls...ok?

numbers are like scientific studies...they are subject to change, on a daily basis...

Neilson Soundscan started in 1991. It was never turned off. They also account for albums that Neilson Soundscan doesn't ''scan'' by adding on an addition 7.5% to their talleys.

Belive what you want. Ill believe the facts.

you don't know they are facts. you are believing what u want..as does anyone.

but like i said..i'm done with u...if u want the last word...and u need it..go ahead. but it'll never validate you as having the facts.
