MJ News in review for 6 Feb 08

Jackson Won't Sing at Grammys

Pop superstar Michael Jackson reportedly will appear at the Grammy Awards on Sunday -- but he won't be singing at the ceremony.

Jackson was rumored to be attending the Los Angeles bash to promote a 25th anniversary re-release of his seminal album "Thriller," and organizers were eager for the star to duet on hits from the LP with a number of contemporary performers, including Will.I.Am, Akon, Kanye West and Fergie.

But Jackson -- who hasn't performed live in seven years -- was reluctant to take on such a big project at short notice.

A source tells the New York Post, "Michael can't go along with that. He needs more time to rehearse new versions of the songs. And everything requires new choreography."

The Post reveals that Grammy producer Ken Ehrlich backed down and consented for Jackson to just appear onstage.

BAD!
And speaking of Jacksons, it turns out that Michael Jackson will make an appearance at this year's Grammy ceremony, however he won't perform as many had hoped.
A medley of his hits are planned including Will.i.am (on "The Girl Is Mine"), Fergie (on "Beat It"), and possibly Kanye West (on "Billie Jean") and Akon (on "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'").
NY's Daily News originally reported that Grammy producer Ken Ehrlich said he'd only do the tribute if Jackson agreed to actually perform.
Later the paper's Rush & Malloy column concluded, "Now, we hear, Ehrlich has agreed to having Jackson just appear onstage - apparently believing viewers will tune in just to see what ***** looks like now. Grammy reps and Jackson spokeswoman Lois Najarian didn't get back to us. But word is Jackson is saving his moves for a show where he'll make some money - a 'Thriller' TV special and a series of concerts."
Soulman says... Smart man.

See Neverland is FINE Whoo Hoo!!! Eat that media!!!!!

This is a very important bit of news but can someone tell me how the %tage is done>:)

Re: 6 Feb 08: MJ news and mentioning(Merged)

I found the source of the leak... I am not sure if I should post it so fans can complain and do something about it, Or leave it off because it could lead into more leaks.. (POSSIBLY)

The person that helped me find it, told me they had a download on the page as well, but I don't see it.. I just see the 'play' section.. It was either RIPPED or downloaded from this specific MAJOR site..

It's page is dedicated to THRILLER 25, has ways on buying it, polls, video vault, rare pics etc.. But it does have the FULL European version for play..

Staff what should I do?? The page is really cool and all.. A fan showed me that this is where the origins of the LEAK came from.. It's an official site that a large amount of people go to..

Good point. Usually percentages are less than 100. lol

I checked the embedded url and on that site the percentages are listed as UP %.

Here is how they compile:

Q. How is the Lycos 50 derived?
A. Each day millions of people visit the Lycos Network, type some 12 million queries into our search box and ask us to "go get it." These queries (which average 2.3 words apiece) form the basis of our weekly Lycos 50 report. Each Monday we tally up the hits for each query during the previous week, then make the following adjustments:
  • Misspellings and plurals are combined and counted as searches on a single term.
  • We ignore any queries which appear to be automated, mechanized or commercially motivated.
  • Categorical terms such as weather, news, and music are not included.
  • We ignore pornographic, four-letter words and otherwise lewd queries, including names of decidedly adult film stars, unless such terms are driven by news events.
  • Queries on popular Web tools are ignored, in order to prevent the medium itself from skewing the list.
  • We exclude all company names with the exception of company queries which are driven by the news.
  • We exclude all country names.
Q. How often does the Lycos 50 change?
A. The Lycos 50 list is updated once per week.

Sony-BMG with its press-release said they are going to release "Thriller-themed" video casts until about middle of November 2008. If so, they hardly know that there will be any new Jackson's album on 26th August or the more so on May.

This may mean that new material album will be released either very late this year or not this year at all; small probability still stays that new album will be released earlier with "Thriller 25" videocasts continuing being released simultaneously. We can hope for that, but should not expect it seriously, though.

Also, press-release has mistake where it claims that dance "robot" had to do with original "Thriller" release; in reality, that dance was conceived by Michael back in 1974 to song "Dancing Machine".

Aside of that, press-release is really good. There is almost always room to wish for something better, but still it is strong. Any ignorant journalist who will ever able to read the press-release to its end will probably see the scale (even though not true scale, which is even bigger, but with Sony-BMG people not knowing much about Jackson they are unable to write in the text).

Whether Michael appears or not at the Grammy's, we'll just have to wait and see. But I'll certainly have a tape in my VCR just in case.

Probably nothing because it has illegal downloads on that page.

well i hope so. but theres many liens against the property from lawsuits and another tax lein that gets put onto any property that he owes. whether that came with the ranch lien (so it now ends because the other lein has gone i dunno). i hope it just means that the lein has been paid from the refianancing and nothing more sinister and thats why its been resolved

Thank you for posting all of the news, you guys. This list is amazing. After everything thathe is been through, MJ is still popular with the people. Number six and he is above Angelina Jolie and Madonna and Janet are not on this list. That is interesting.

Michael Jackson's Thriller 25 is Rocking the Planet!

:D

Thanx Rasta ;- )

I liked this writer's taste in ads as well as the points made (especially the crack about sleeping through the womens movement.)

About Those Gamey Ads

February 7, 2008

At the risk of sounding unhip, this year's Super Bowl ads set a standard for crassness. If the commercials that aired during the game watched by nearly 100 million viewers are any indication of what the public wants, the culture is in trouble.

At least four ads appeared to make fun of foreigners. One for Bud Lite involved a group of all-American guys in a bar delivering pickup lines with phony Asian and Middle East accents. Two spots for salesgenie.com featured characters with Indian and Chinese accents of the type done by bad stand-up comics back in the 1950s. Haven't we advanced beyond resurrecting racial and ethnic stereotypes to sell products?

One of the most offensive spots was the Planters' message in which an ugly woman (unibrow, big teeth, bad hair) attracts a skein of love-crazed suitors simply by wearing the scent of Planters' cashew nuts as perfume. Sure, the concept is funny, but somehow the execution made it seem cruel. Did the producers sleep through the women's movement?

Also disturbing was a not-very-subtle sado-masochistic theme in too many of the ads. Amp energy drink chose to sell its product by having a fat man act as a human battery with jumper cables attached to his nipples. Nice.

Pepsi put Justin Timberlake through a cinematic gantlet of torture dispensed every time a woman sipped the product through a straw. Ha ha. Pain is funny?

Some ads were memorably icky. Careerbuilder.com's disembodied heart might have been designed by the same person who thought up the Mucinex mucus marauders. That ETrade baby buying stock on the computer was funny until it threw up on the keyboard. Spare us.

Fortunately, there were several delightfully creative ads that needed no grossness or violence to get our attention. The Budweiser Clydesdales came through with their usual class. The talking stain in the Tide ad and the huge pigeons in the pitch for FedEx were both funny and on point. It was hard not to smile at the lizards dancing to Michael Jackson's "Thriller."

Yes, taste is subjective. But at $2.4 million for a 30-second ad spot, we expected better. Next year, there's always Tivo.
