Can we get Sony to tell us the current sales-figure?

Thriller in the US 40 million | worldwide about 20 million

Since 1984, Thriller has been known to sell about or just over 1 million each year.
That would make 25 million copies over the last 20 to 25 years.

On top of that, each time Michael would release a new album that would sell 20 million or more, Thriller sales would also go up all over the world.
Thriller sales would increase in those 1 or 2 years of the new album promotion and tour.

What you are left with is the 60million he sold at the start, 25 million over the last 20 - 25 years, and the spike in sales during a new album release.
104 minus (60million + 25million) leaves a 19 million difference.
That 19 million is moreless easily covered by the spike in sales during Bad, Dangerous, History, BOTDF, releases.

Now, when someone tries to make out that after sales of 40million (US alone) in 1984, Michael has only sold 15 million more copies of Thriller in the last over 20 years around the world, that just doesn't add up.
But there's also music politics, that tries to control the true figure being known.

That's understandable. This too will pass, lol. ^_^

Nice discussion, y'all. No blows were thrown. :D

yeah..nice that you noticed that..lol...people tend to want to notice the opposite...:)

it's funny..lol...i thought financial matters weren't allowed to be discussed here....i could be wrong..this may not fall into that category...since it's sales...

Its not discussing Michael personal finances
thats why it is alllowed

I don't see why its difficult to believe that say Thriller has sold 104mill. I mean it sold 40mil+ in the US alone so what's the big deal with it selling 50mil in the rest of the world.

US is ONE country Lol. There are many other countries in this world. Also in the latter years MJ has been selling more outside the US than b4. So to be honest since its release in the eighties its been what about 20 odd years now combining all the sales from all the countries its not so 'strange' for it to have sold that many.

Remember the US isn't the whole world. Lol! Its one country that's it. Yes its a big country but so is China etc Lol. Also the charts in many countries including the US have shown MJ album sales in the top 100 for years now. All these sales add up. Some of y'all are acting as though MJ hasn't been selling all these years. Come on peeps have some faith.

I believe those figures

that's what i be tryin to say. however i have a tendency to feel like i have to duck and run for cover every time i think of sayin it! lol...

i mean..i'm a usa citizen, but i have to admit..some peeps in this country tend to believe the world revolves around them. on the tmz show some act said that they were big in Japan...and, so one of the tmz journalists said 'well i'm big in japan too', in a joking manner as if to say that making it in Japan is like not making it at all. or as if the population of Japan, somehow is way less significant than the population of the usa.(every other journalist in that room laughed as if they really thought that was funny). if u r in a country and u r loved u will feel it, no matter what country it is.

and MJ sells every year, every day, around the world. and indeed, if the usa is a big country, the world is a much bigger world. it's like..lol...no, the world is not flat. and comparably speaking...no..the usa is not the world's only significant country. MJ is kicking a**

Because it is...difficult.

 But Timmy its not. There are 195 countries. Roughly he would have sold 533k copies per country. In 20 odd years its roughly works out 27k per year per country. So its not that bad taking into consideration that US sold 50mil+ on its own! :)

No underestimate the power of Asian's consumption. lol
Only in China, if one in ten thousands Chinese buy one MJ CD, this will already make up to 130k sales! Let alone the MJ fans who buy multiple albums and also sales from Japan, Korea, Malaysia, India etc.

i agree. i don't get why some people don't get that.

There you have it! Even that is hard to believe! And as long as RIAA doesn't update that number I won't believe it! Sorry!

And I also don't believe the 104 mio number... to me that's impossible! In 1992 they said at the Billboard Awards, that it has sold 50 mio copies, Michael stood right there, when they said it! I simply refuse to believe that it sold another 54 mio since! And if it really would have sold that crazy, it would have reflected in massive chart positions around the world in the past 16 years... and that hasn't happened!

The only thing I might believe is that the numbers of the Thriller project comes that high (meaning album, singles, longform video), but even that seems unlikely!

Exactly. So Thriller sales have been a "controversy" from day one. I'm just happy the guy sold a lot of sh*t. That's more than we will ever see if we were to ever push STOCK in Wall Street!

thriller has sold 104 million guys whether u believe it or not. Im sure pple wouldnt make up numbers lol, and give him all these awards if its bull. unless u guyz where the ones adding the sales then ur just gonna have 2 deal with the number lol. Get Over it, u should be happy

Calm down, dude. It ain't nothing but analysis. Inflation happens to anybody. :D

I find it hard to believe that the 104 million figure was pulled out of a hat. why is it so hard to believe that thriller has sold 104 million. I don't find it so hard to believe because MJ is the best entertainer in the world with the Thriller being the best selling album of all time. MJ also has broke more records then any other artist. Thriller has had 25 years to come up with that figure. 25 years is enough time for MJ to come up with figures like that. The 104 million Thriller figure isn't so surprising to me.

Because you would have to have miscalculate a lot of numbers if the 104 million story was the case.
MJ has the population of India. Pakistan and China behind him. They are some of the most populated countries in the world. Any one of those countries alone could have given MJ 104 million sales figures. Do the maths.

I bet MJ has alot of sales there but a majority of it being pirate copys, seeing as its the pirate copys that are widely availble in pakistan from what I know, correct me if i'm wrong
