LOS ANGELES (AP) — As dozens of buoyant Michael Jackson fans queued up in the Nokia Plaza to be among the first to see their idol's last performance, others watching the scene expressed mixed emotions.

Tim Leiweke, president of AEG, which bankrolled Jackson's "This is It" tour and is a key player in the film, recalled the moment he got the news of Jackson's death. "Well, at first it lets all the air out of you, and you sit here and you're stunned at how quickly it happened and occurred. You're in denial. You can't believe it. You're looking around, saying, 'What happened?"

Zip ahead some three months, to Thursday afternoon — about an hour before the opening of the nearly two-and-a-half day waiting line for advance tickets to "Michael Jackson's 'This is It'" concert documentary. Leiweke reunited with musicians, singers and dancers from the tour in a press conference held in the plaza, which is directly across the street from the Staples Center, the site of Jackson's rehearsals, the last of which took place just hours before his death June 25.

"It's mixed feelings, first of all, to see these guys again, and to be in this space," noted singer Darryl Phinnessee. "You know, we finished rehearsing at quarter to midnight the night before Michael died, and he was energetic and up and doing his thing, as you'll see in the movie."

Crafted from hundred hours of rehearsal footage, "This is It" is directed by longtime Jackson collaborator Kenny Ortega, who had been working with Jackson on the concerts.

"You see the music, the studios, the rehearsals, the dancers, the auditions, the costumes," Leiweke said. "You see all of the behind-the-scenes, and then you finally see the last few days of the dress rehearsals, and you begin to see the genius of Michael: the dancing, the singing, the choreography, and his concept of creating a one-time performance that no one would ever forget."

Leiweke said the movie also will provide proof that AEG had Jackson's well-being in mind.

"I think we still are hurt," Leiweke said. "Some of the things that people have said about us, which are so untrue, this movie's going to restore his legacy, and prove that we, in fact, gave Michael a second chance here. And an opportunity to make the kind of comeback he was dreaming of. And that we created an environment for him that was probably the best environment that the guy had the last 10 or 15 years of his life. And I'm very proud of the way we treated Michael, and very proud of the partnership that we had with him. And this movie is an opportunity to celebrate that, and we could get past all of the gossip and all of the innuendo."

"This is It" is set to open in cinemas worldwide Oct. 28.

It is. I appreciated reading it, thanks for posting. I'm not in the most trusting head-place right now when it comes to AEG so I read this article to mean that they are putting the pedal to the metal on getting MJ fans to trust them when all they had to do imho is:

- offer fans sincere condolences (which I didn't hear, maybe I missed it so somebody let me know)

- offerring the memorial lottery first to those who spent their money on the concerts that MJ's loyal, excited fans sold out

especially since MJ rehearsed for those very fans in AEG's Staple Center where the memorial was held

- showing concern in what really has happened to Michael by making some kind of statement

- waiting a respectable amount of time before marketing TTI like some kind of blockbuster movie for the masses when MJ's fans are still in disbelief, mystery and grief

I don't doubt they had everything Michael needed to create in a positive, creative environment, afterall, they're not stupid, and that aside, this article did nothing to convince me they might not have had something to do with MJ's leaving so soon.

Again, I do appreciate reading that. At least I know, they know, some people are not trusting them any further than we can toss them.

I am really wondering why they are rushing this movie out so fast. They jumped on advertising immediately after "the news".

Its like they have reduced MJ to a mere commodity that will fill their AEG-owned- theaters to the brim, using MJ fans as the number 1 target market. They disgust me quite frankly. Thanks again for posting.

Well of course they're rushing it bc they see it as a major opportunity now to make money fast, while Mike's death is still 'fresh' in the public's mind. However disgusting that may sound, that's how they work, they have to think of the masses ( not the fans, but the other millions of ppl that will be going to see the movie) and 'beat the iron while it's hot'.
Of course they're gonna make themselves look good in the process.

They could've shown good will, along with the estate, by not selling the footage to Sony.

inasmuch as I can certainly expect any self-respecting capitalists to 'strike while the iron is hot' it doesn't make me feel any better about the fact that they have done just that to the exclusion of any humane consideration, considering the circumstances.

MJ has arguably the largest fan base in the history of recording artists and their needs have been completely ignored, even in the most basic aspects of 'customer care'.

Its disgusting to me. If I felt myself as just some fan, I guess I'd see MJ as just some 'act', but for those of us who do not see ourselves or MJ that way, it's bothersome, with all due respect to opportunistic capitalism, and to you, (and anyone) for your understanding of it.

They could've shown good will,
heLLO

I still do not trust AEG so if they are hoping that this will help us to trust them again and that they had Michael's best interest at heart....I dont feel that way.....because if they had his best interest at heart then they would of put those concerts on hold and said,"Michael..take care of yourself..go get healthy..you are losing to much weight...and we want a healthy Michael".....but did they say this ???...NOOO....so I dont trust them and I never will....I am still so very very angry.

how in the hell is the movie supposed to clear AEG's name? I don't get it. I mean, we all know they watched Michael day in and day out going slowly to his death and did nothing. NOTHING.

how is this movie supposed to clear anything on their behalf?

Well it won't be clearing their names for me!
#1. I won't be seeing the movie since they sold it to Sony.
#2. I wouldn't have seen the movie anyway because to some extent, they all played a hand in Michaels death.
#3. I think all the businessmen are in cahoots together. They are all tied in some way to Tohme.

So, good try AEG. I can see how painfully thin Michael is on the released rehearsal footage. Nothing could make me believe none of you saw there was a problem. All you had to do was get Michael some help. Oh yeah, you would have lost some money when your over blown amount of 50 shows couldn't be done but Michael would have his life. Those three kids would have their father and the whole world would have their icon!
The money will not spend so well where you all will all be spending eternity!
I pray for grizzly ghouls from every tomb to close in and seal your doom!
I am sure they will be waiting for you.

easy to clear your name when you have full editing and manipulation of the footage. Do they think we are stupid??

 YES.EVERYTHING YOU SAY .
. so on point, it hurts.

I agree.

...and isn't it ironic how Sony of all companies outbid everyone else, or was that the plan all along? -_-

The movie will "clear AEG's" name by being extensively manipulated and computer-enhanced. The suspision about AEG continues to revolve around the condition Michael was in before his death. AEG execs have been very vocal about what great shape he was in. Fans, and Karen Faye, were afraid for his very LIFE, he was losing so much weight. So the movie will show a vigorous, healthy Michael. I'm sure that for some of the more athletic moves, a body-double will be used, with rapid edits.

Do you really understand what movies are capable of DOING? I watched SpiderMan on tv yesterday. Was there REALLY a guy leaping from building to building, doing back-flips, and crashing through windows? NO, there was not. AEG's weak-point is the condition Michael was in. If they KNEW that he was not doing well and failed to stop the concerts, then they were, in part, responsible. I think their culpability goes much deeper than that, of course. Fans will see the movie and grieve for the concerts that could have been. But, I think they couldn't. Michael reportedly weighed only 108 pounds when he died. (Not sure if that "leak" was accurate. . but it might be.) A person of his height who weighed so little, was at risk of losing his life just from that severe thinness. SO, the movie will be enhanced, and AEG thinks they will be off-the-hook because of that. (Just look at the patent, and how MUCH there was in special effects. . . . .)

why did they sell the rights to Sony above everyone else? Everyone knows that Michael hated Sony and did not want to have anything to do with those bastards..This will not clear AEG. I saw those Men form AEG came and gave little talks and I was disgusted. They all looked so healthy, whilst Michael was Getting thinner every day. Now they are opening TII at their Regal 14 in LA? I wish I could of said something at the press conference on Thursday evening. I looked across to Staples Centre and I wanted to cry.
They are even manipulating the dancers and singers
If it wasn't for the Estate and Michael I would not go to see this movie.

I will not be seeing this movie. The estate has plenty of money. I can't fault anyone who does, of course, but I couldn't personally stomach it.

The singers and dancers all signed confidentiality contracts.

Interesting that the estate executors, McClain and Branca, are the executive producers of the movie?

Yes, Michael hated Sony. He would NOT be pleased with this. . . . .

Not at all, Let's not forget about the funeral footage at the end of the money. I mean really was that necessary.

I will never see this movie. As much as I love him and his kids I just don't think he would want me to compromise my beliefs for that movie. I'm sure he will forgive for not going to see it. I'm doing it out of respect for him.

Victoria.....I dont know how I missed this!!!!......were does it say this.....This is just WAY to shaddy for me....but..I might add...it does not surprise me..

I agree with you, of course it bothers me too, and everyone out there that is more than just a casual fan, like you've said.
Regular 'fans' that don't know all the details are most likely the ones that will fatten up their wallets and of course it's wrong but that's the way it is...

//
And John McClain is also the producer of the Cd that's coming out, which makes it even more suspicious, I think...

I won't be going to see the movie either.
I wasn't going because I don't want to put money in AEG & Sony's pockets, but a relative wants me to go and she bought the tickets. We've both never seen MJ in concert, so she wants to go. She thinks it'll be good because some of the money is going to his family.

That's really disgusts me about the executors being exec producers. The whole thing seems to be a mess. I guess now we know what MJ was up against. It's out in the open.
I've already posted that I'm going, but I'm not buying the DVD.

I've heard that the estate is getting 90% of the movie but that it will not see any future profits from the movie and DVD sales. Do you know if that's true?

I think AEG knew way ahead of time that MJ would not make the concerts. That is why they set up that terribly expensive video camera to film the rehearsals and auditions. We've seen rehearsal videos before of MJs....they are relatively simple but good. AEG made darn sure their videos for TII could be made into a movie since I think they knew MJ wouldn't make it to the concerts. They didn't care about MJ at all...it was all 100% business and that magic word "Money".

What we are seeing now and what we are feeling now is what MJ felt for many, many years of his life.....That he was taken advantage of, deceived & betrayed....(IMO) this time until he died (thanks to some help from Dr. Murray and others).

Right now all the vultures are smiling and happy. I especially see the glee on the face of Jermaine Jackson now that he knows his Mommy is going to make sure he always has a home and can be lazy for the rest of his life and many of the Jacksons can continue to leech off MJ the rest of their lives.

Michael wanted to be loved by his Father and his brothers so much and they took advantage of MJs need and desire to be loved by them to obtain money. They didn't care about MJ. Actually, I think some hated him and were terribly jealous of him since they didn't have enough talent to make it on their own.

I have to keep reminding myself that in this world of ours, things aren't fair and MJ knew that very well. MJ is receiving his reward right now and forever with God and also MJ feels the overwhelming love of God wrapped around him. He has no more sadness nor tears. Unfortunately, I can't say that for the other Jacksons. However, I hope MJs children aren't tainted by the Jackson clan and the good things MJ taught them will remain in their hearts forever.

I want to say how sad it makes me feel to look at that picture of our loving Michael and Kenny Ortega as Michael was looking through the eye of that brand new and expensive camera that would capture his last movements on stage to benefit AEG and others but not him. It's almost like looking at the brand new and shiny gun that was purchased to kill you. Sorry I went on and on so much but I believe this to be true.

On June 25th 2009 Michael Jackson died. He was only 50 years old and the father of three young children

Were you shocked? You should have been. In fact, the true state of Michael Jackson’s failing health was being hidden from you by those who are making a profit from the screening of the “This is It” movie.

This is what you are going to see:

-the greatest entertainer that ever lived giving his all to rehearse what could have been an amazing, ground-breaking show
-a motivated crew, working hard to accomplish an extraordinary project
-special effects, incredible choreography, lighting and staging
-movie make-believe at its best....

This is what you are NOT going to see:

- Michael Jackson’s shocking sudden weight loss as a result of stress and medication, reducing him to a mere 108 lbs (49kg) at the time of his death.
- Kenny Ortega, the director of both the tour and the movie, having to help Michael Jackson up the stairs, having to spoon-feed him and cut his food.
-Michael Jackson's growing concerns: in May, while rehearsing over 10 hours a day, Michael Jackson confided to a few trusted fans he did not feel ready to do 50 shows, having agreed only to 10 originally, he felt pressured and the tour schedule seemed grueling.
-Michael Jackson failing to show up at rehearsals because he was not well, and being picked up from his house by his choreographer to force him to go to work.
- Michael Jackson’s debilitating insomnia and loss of appetite, the crippling pressure he was under, which led him to be over-prescribed and over-medicated by criminal doctors who kept him in an altered, drowsy state throughout the day and in an anesthetic coma at night.
- Everyone around him witnessing to Michael Jackson looking confused and groggy, forgetting the lyrics of his own songs during rehearsals. Nonetheless, his entourage kept enabling his dangerous prescription-drug use, to keep him relaxed, rested and under 'control'. Those very drugs are named as the cause of death in the coroner’s report.
- You will also not see Michael Jackson’s loyal fans and a couple of his friends attempting to intervene, writing letters pleading for those around him to care for his condition, and ultimately, after being ignored, giving letters of concern to Michael himself. Unfortunately, those who had the power to act did not, instead they chose to keep Michael Jackson isolated and controlled.

You will not see any of this.

It was inhumane. Michael Jackson needed help, but they were too busy relishing the profits this tour would have generated to acknowledge it. AEG, the tour promoter, and Michael's own entourage pressed on and did not intervene to stop what clearly looked like a tragedy in waiting.

On June 25th 2009, the world lost its greatest star. The souls of Michael's fans are still weeping and they may never heal.

Michael Jackson had so much more to give to the world, but his heart stopped under the incredible pressure that was forced on him for this grueling tour, in addition to years of ill-treatment and lies by haters, enablers and media.

Michael Jackson deserved and needed the help he wasn't given. Instead, through editing and movie-making they try to tell us a different story in an attempt to clear their own conscience, spreading lies to conceal their responsibility. Too bad we were there to witness what truly happened in the weeks leading to his death and we are here now to tell you about it.

Should you decide to watch it, we hope that you will see this movie and the greed that produced it with different eyes, because you are watching the product of those who should bear much guilt for the passing of the world’s greatest entertainer, Michael Jackson, while they are reaping the profits of his death.

This did not have to be it.
