RETURN OF THE KING: The late King of Pop makes a triumphant return to Billboard's charts.

Michael Jackson's posthumous set claims top honors on R&B/Hip-Hop Albums.

The album is Jackson's eighth No. 1 on the R&B/hip-hop album tally:

Peak Year, Title, Weeks at No. 1
1979, "Off the Wall," 16
1983, "Thriller," 37 (the longest reign in the chart's 45-year history)
1987, "Bad," 18
1992, "Dangerous," 12
1995, "HIStory: Past, Present and Future Book 1," two
2001, "Invincible," four
2009, "Michael Jackson's This Is It" (soundtrack), four
2011, "Michael," one

Jackson ups his total to 94 cumulative weeks atop R&B/Hip-Hop Albums, the most among solo acts. Only the Temptations (109) have spent more time at the summit. Jackson has spent an additional 39 weeks at No. 1 with five leading albums as a member of the Jackson 5.

The arrival of "Michael" spurs a 65-39 jump on the Billboard Hot 100 for the set's first radio single "Hold My Hand," with Akon. The song is Jackson's 38th top 40 hit on the Hot 100, breaking a tie with Neil Diamond. Among male artists, Jackson trails only Elvis Presley (80), Elton John (57), Stevie Wonder (46), James Brown (44), Marvin Gaye (41), Lil Wayne (41; see below) and Frankie Valli (39) for most top 40 charted titles among solo males.

"Hold My Hand" is Jackson's first song to ascend to the Hot 100's top 40 since "Butterflies" took flight to No. 14 in January 2002. With the new track's advance, Jackson becomes the first artist to reach the top 40 on the Hot 100 in each of the '70s, '80s, '90s, '00s and '10s.

MICHAEL JACKSON'S "MICHAEL" IS THE #1 SELLING GLOBAL ALBUM

Today's worldwide results underscore Michael Jackson's prophetic vision in seeing the world as one territory and his fans part of a single community, which helped endear him to countless fans and make him the global icon and superstar he remains today. Some of the sales figures from across the world show the following:

The album marks another release under the new agreement between the Estate of Michael Jackson and Sony Music announced in March that continues the label's 35-year relationship with Michael and his music. During that time, Michael sold hundreds of millions of records, had 13 #1 singles and released the pop culture phenomenon "Thriller," which remains music's all-time bestselling album with more than 100 million copies sold worldwide.
  • MICHAEL shipped Platinum in 14 territories including the United States, UK, Germany, France (2x), Italy (3x), Spain, Portugal, Poland, Russia, Belgium, Czech Republic (4x), Canada, Korea and the Middle East.
  • The album debuted at #1 in Germany, Italy, Netherlands and Sweden.
  • And on top of the # 1 album chart entry in Germany, sales of MICHAEL broke the country's 2010's first-week record with over 85,000 units sold.
  • Opening week sales of more than 113,000 in the U.K. scored the biggest opening week for a new Michael Jackson studio album since 'Dangerous' nearly 20 years ago.
  • In Japan, the album is the fourth Michael Jackson album to ever debut in the top 3, joining Bad, Thriller and last year's "This Is It" companion album.
  • The album is in the top five in Belgium (#2), US (#3), Japan (#3), the UK (#4), France (#4), Denmark (#4). In the US, the album shipped platinum and debuted at #3 of the Billboard Album chart with just under 230,000 copies sold.
  • The album went Gold in 17 territories on arrival in Japan, China, Australia, Ireland, Austria, Netherlands, Denmark, Finland, Greece, Hungary, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, New Zealand, India, Philippines and Taiwan.

Does somebody know how is album performing in Mexico, India, Argentina, South Korea, Greece, Portugal, Turkey? Those are also pretty big markets for MJ.

A total of 3.2 million copies of MICHAEL were shipped around the world (that was the first initial shipment). Of that, approximately 800,000 were sold the first week. This does not include China.

It is expected that when all is said and done MICHAEL will sell between 4 and 5 million copies which would make it a very successful album.

This will be a dumb question but how can they know it will end up selling that much in the end? I hope the new single will come out to help the album. I hope it is considered a success.

Is the album Number 1 worldwide JUST on the R&B/hip-hop album charts...or is it simply the Number 1 album on all charts worldwide right now? Which one is it? I'm confused...

Michael is officially Number ONE in Russia!!!

http://www.lenta.ru/articles/2010/12/24/chart/

In the article they said that the year is ending on a loud positive note cause Michael Jackson's album "Michael" smashed down the charts debuting on the top spot with a platinum status! :)

(they also mentioned that Michael failed to climb the top of Billboard charts but did much better in Europe with top spots in Germany, Italy, Netherlands and Sweden).
