Janet Jackson 'felt so unattractive' for 'a very, very long time'
By Alan Duke, CNN
February 14, 2011 12:49 p.m. EST

Los Angeles (CNN) -- Janet Jackson would bang her head against a wall because she felt "so unattractive," the pop star told CNN's Piers Morgan.

Jackson, in an interview set to air on CNN's "Piers Morgan Tonight" at 9 p.m. ET Tuesday, talked about her struggles with weight and body image over the years, her relationship with her father and dealing with the passing of her brother Michael.

"There was a time when I was so down and felt so unattractive and it lasted for a very, very long time," Jackson said, "that I used to -- I used to bang my head against the wall."

The banging would be hard and "the person that I was with, my ex-husband at the time, I mean, he'd have to stop me," she said.

Jackson, 44, is promoting her new book, "True You," which focuses on her lifelong self-image and self-esteem struggles.

She did talk about her most famous brother, Michael Jackson, calling him "very sweet, very gentle, incredibly smart, always about love."

"He knew who he was," she said.

Morgan also talked to her about Joe Jackson, the father known for using stern discipline to keep his large family on a path toward entertainment stardom.

The one time she called him "Dad," he corrected her.

"You call me Joseph," she said her father told her. "I'm Joseph to you."

Jackson said she felt sad when she was younger that her relationship with her father was not closer, but it is a feeling that has passed.

"It would have been nice," she said. "I would go over to a friend's house when mother would let me go, and I'd see my friends, the relationship with their father, how they call him dad and sit all in their lap."

Janet Jackson sat near her father in court for several days last month when her family attended the preliminary hearing for Dr. Conrad Murray, who is charged in Michael Jackson's death.

Did Joseph tell his kids not to call him dad because he didn't like being a father, or because of their religion (or maybe both)? I thought that JW's didn't use names like mom/dad/etc. I don't even know if Joe is or ever was a JW, but Katherine has been for a very long time. Maybe she didn't want the kids referring to either of them as mom or dad.

I feel bad for Janet that she had such a negative image of herself. Literally banging her head against the wall until her ex-husband stopped her? Wow - that's really, really sad. I wonder if her book will be good.

I believe they call Katherine "Mother" and still do. Joseph DID allow a child to call him Dad/Daddy....however, it was none of the children he had with Katherine. Apparently, JoVohnnie (sp) was allowed to call him "Daddy". Not sure if it was in the Rabbi tapes that Michael mentioned this and how it hurt him to know JoV was allowed to call him Dad, but he and his siblings could not.

If someone else remembers the source of that, please post. I'm drawing a blank right now and am unsure.

Anyway, yeah...it had to be hard having a parent take away something that's basically a term of affection that goes beyond biology.

Joe not wanting to be called dad has nothing to do with religion. Joe was never a JW anyway. Joe is just one of those parents who wanted to be called by their 1st name.

You're right... I don't remember the source either though

They call Katherine mother. I remember the reality show they wanted to be her a purse in a store and they were calling her mother. It's all Joe. I don't understand how he made it a big deal not letting his own children call him dad or father. Michael never wanted his kids to call him Michael. He wanted them to call him daddy. I think it's terrible that they have to call him Joseph.

WOW SHE ACTUALLY SAID SOMETHING NICE.. I wonder why the change? she hasn't said anything nice about him since his death

No Diana, thats inaccurate information, JW's allow their children to call them mom and dad, infact its heavily encouraged. its a loving title and as before it's heavily encouraged. It had nothing to do with religion whatsoever, its just Joe's wishes of not desiring to be called Dad.

and like a previous poster, Kate allowed her children to call them Mother and im sure the rest might call her Mom, and I can be sure to say, Joe Jackson wasn't credited as being one of Jehovah's witness, only Kate.

I watched dateline, so I shall take my opinion on this all to the dateline thread however there is one thing that I will expell. it is sad that ones who deem so attractive to the public have such a self hated view on themselves, it kind of breaks the mold that attractive ones think they flaunt the good while we see someone so beautiful struggle with heavily graven self esteem issues. I'm not placing pity among her, yet it is horribly saddening to see

That isn't the first thing he said nice about him

It just goes to show that no one is perfect

Piers tweeted that Janet made some 'remarkable revelations' about Michael to him during the interview.

It would have been great if he had tweeted that Janet had made some 'remarkable revelations' about herself, as that is who the interview was with!

As much as some members of the Jackson family annoy and disappoint me, this kind of thing makes me sympathetic. They know that they have to talk about Michael. So they bite the bullet and do it. But the headlines are seldom about the stuff they wanted to be interviewed for in the first place. That must be very grating!

I did not watch the interview. Did Janet really say this?
I'm in complete shock, but happy if it is true!!!!

Thanks for correctly me on the JW thing. I don't know where I got that from.

So, given this information, wow - Joe was a really horrible father.

Piers tweeted that Janet made some 'remarkable revelations' about Michael to him during the interview.

why is Janet making revelations about MJ when she is supposed to be promoting herself?

Piers tweeted that Janet made some 'remarkable revelations' about Michael to him during the interview.

Now that's embarrassing, in my opinion.

I mean, Janet is there to promote HER book. Why is this Morgan dude tweeting about "remarkable revelations" regarding Michael. Shouldn't he be tweeting about something Janet told him about HERSELF!

Is he trying to entice the viewing public to tune in because Janet is going to reveal something about Michael Jackson, and not because Janet is there to discuss her book. Well, dang it, that's exactly what he's doing. LOL!

@JanetJackson was sensational i/v - remarkable revelations about Michael, her Dad, self-abuse, and bizarre way some superstars lose weight.

Lets be honest here. Its discussion about Michael that will draw the people in. Piers Morgan was a tabloid editor in the UK for years-he knows what will draw people in.

"I feel like it's part of my job as a little sister, to have the back of my brothers and sisters," said Janet, describing Michael as "very sweet, very gentle, incredible smart. Always about love." She also recalls a memory the two shared during their youth.

"Mike and I were very close," Jackson tells Piers Morgan. "We used to go to this restaurant called Love's...and we used to get a ton of dinners and we'd drive around in the car looking for homeless people to give them to."

Wonderful, positive stories like these should get more coverage. Whether she's sucking up to the media or not, these stories are rare glimpses of Michael the human being that can have an impact on the public, specially if they're coming from his family. And what's so sad is that there are countless of such precious gems to be said, yet, somehow, truncated views and impressions of him always prevail one way or the other. Really sad. ...

I suppose this is what the poster was refering to.....

What a difference it would've made if this was the focus members of his family took from the beginning instead of behaving like they have.

Wonder if this is gonna be another interview where the host spends half the time talking about MJ?

Oh, Janet move on, girl. This story with Joe is getting old and boring...
There is no such a thing as perfect family. The brothers went through far far worst abuse than she.
I know that book is about weight issue, and self-esteem, but I wish she gives away advices how to overcome it. We all know about Joe and how her bros teased her.
But who hasn't been teased by brothers?
She became popular since she debuted as Penny in "Good Times" .
Its not like she was bullied at school, or in the street, or in the music industry, or by acting cast. Those are real problems....She was popular as a kid.
Even Brook Shields spoke how she hated her body, she thought she was the ugliest, but she was known as the most beautiful....Janet is not the only one who went through self-esteem issues...But she needs to stop acting as innocent and scared lil kid, because she was no timid child then, she spoke back at brothers. And fired Joe as manager when she was very young. If anything Janet hated in herself, was her vocal range. She admitted that she wished she had strong voice as her sister Rebbie...
More and more what Leonard Row wrote in that book it seems like has some truth in it, as much as I hate to admit.

I agree.. she should've said this kind of stuff 18 months ago

Janet was asked by Piers about her father, so she answered. Your attitude is a disgrace. You're saying that because the brothers had to go through worse abuse, Janet's abuse didn't hurt? You're saying that Janet's self-esteem issues didn't affect or shouldn't have affected her because she is not the only one who has self-esteem issues? You're saying that because she fired Joe as her manager, she wasn't a scared innocent kid? Remember Michael fired Joe as well. It wasn't an easy decision but it had to be done.

Michael giving homeless people food and such are the kinds of things people need to hear. Liza Minelli was right when she said people will never really know all the good Michael did for people. All the same crap that gets repeated over and over again gets the attention and people believe it. It makes me sad too.

speaking of Liza..... am still wondering what she ment when she said.."the shit is gonna hit the fan now"....when she was on that interview after Michael passed. Sorry didn't mean ti hijack this thread....I am just still curious about that .
