Spike Lee BAD 25 Documentary- DVD / Blu Ray [available on iTunes Nov 19]

Re: The Spike Lee BAD 25 Documentary /DVD/ TV / Theater Release [Discussion]

I agree with you guys, it would be great if Spike focus on doing documentaries on Dangerous, History, & Invincible over the course of years though, then if he could go back to Off The Wall & Thriller. Documentaries for all his albums would be an excellent for references that upcoming generations can appreciate and study years to come in the academia field, art schools, are at home. Yesterday a music or an art teacher was talking about her students who are between the ages of five and six years old were listening to Michael's music and they feel such a connection with him. She said sometimes she can't understand because Michael's made these songs years & years before these kids were even born yet it has the same effect on them like those who were alive when Michael first released the songs which is so mindblowing. The artist by the name of Amalia Amaki (an exhibit exploring the life and legacy of Michael Jackson through photos and mixed-media art) said Michael's artistry is so alive when he first came out, it's alive now and will be alive generations to becoem because a true artist put all his joy, pain, suffering- bascially his soul into his art and that never dies. Imagine the Off the Wall documentary: MJ breaking away from his family to start his journey to become the biggest & one of the most important artist of all time , the album was a blockbuster success and was the biggest selling album by an African American artist at that time. Thriller Documentary: the album that changed the face of pop culture, made a huge impact on the music industry as far as releasing 5-7 singles, and videos was taken more seriously and became creative paltform to promote artist's albums. The Dangerous documentary was alot of his fans considered his creative peak: the superbowl halftime, the music, First artist to have such major endorment deals, Videos being premiered on primetime television. The History Album would be the most interesting because it was such a dark album b/c Michael put all his pain & feelings of betrayal in this album due to the allegationsand the media just defaming his image and the general public falling for it History was a very autobiogrpahical piece and then do one on Invincible & the conflicts Michael had with Tommy Motolla etc. Michael have such a fascinating History people can study.

And where is Lady Gaga a year later? I haven't heard squat about her. Taylor Swift seems to be the songstress of the moment. Meanwhile, 25 years after BAD, MJ gets 4.4 million.

lol what is this comment.

Lady Gaga's awesome. She's currently on a world tour playing stadiums and arenas.
Born This Way album is soo good.

More documentaries of this kind for the later albums would be amazing for the general public to see. Those who like MJ, but don't know the extent and genius of his talent would realize how great he truly is. That would be the best for his legacy and maybe even a form of vindication. I would be excited to see more documentaries like this happen and have a total Michael Jackson revolution :D

the two phrases i underlined in your post would be the best thing we as supporter can do for MJ after all he's done for the fans

I wonder if they did Dangerous, if they would spend a lot of time (if at all) on the allegations. Was part of that era.

Why would they? It has nothing to do with the making of the album.

These are being done with partnership with Michael Jackson Estate so to answer your question absolutely not. They might have addressed and debunked them if it was a movie about life of MJ but it's not relevant to any album.

That's the only problem with doing something about History for instance. It is Michael's most personal and powerful album as a result of what he was put through. Tricky.

No phase of Michael should be ignored. It would be very interesting to watch documentaries about his other albums. I would love to!

Bad 25 is epic, documentary seems awesome! roll on HIStory 3D and hopefully Dangerous 25 with a new Damgerous show I.E Buenos Aires which could be on film as it was intended for the Dangerous release in 1993. Invincible 25 in 2026 would be cool if the contract is extended! Off the Wall needs a celebratory release and thriller deserves a fresh make over too possibly with the Victory Tour! This is it Anniversary package with 50 more hours of rehearsals on 7 Blu-Ray discs and the songs recorded from late 08-09.

Re: The Spike Lee BAD 25 Documentary /DVD/ TV / Theater Release [Discussion]

Billy you are so right about Michael documentaries being a great tool for future generations to study. He documented so much of his projects, that I am sure once the estate finds more footage in his vast storage, the other documentaries will be filled with more visual gems that we have not seen.

Michael was the only artist I can remember who had a tv "occasion" when album videos came out. I remember running home to look at thriller video when it came out and the videos for dangerous. I remember they treated it like almost an election where different groups gathered at a campus, ect., where then asked what they thought of it immediately after the airing. People were commenting as though this was a serious world event. Even kids were commenting, although saying what their mom said-- that there was too much violence or touching his crotch for B & W. They even said, "so if it does not matter if you are black or white why did he bleach his skin--missing the whole point of the song and repeating what their moms said. I think in the future documentaries, they have to include how the videos were "tv moments."

Well back to BAD 25..

Re: The Spike Lee BAD 25 Documentary /DVD/ TV / Theater Release [Discussion]

hummph.. I never thought of that before, but now that you say and the Flashdance movie being listed by MJ. I always thought that one reason Michael picked Tatiana was because he "saw himself" in her... as well.

Imitation is considered the highest form of flattery. No film has ever been copied, parodied and referenced in popular culture quite as much as the 1983 classic, Flashdance. Whether it's the 'chair' scene in Mawby's bar or the 'audition' scene that clinches the young star's place in the academy, Flashdance has inspired a long list of pretenders and fashion trends since its release. The first collaboration between Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer, who went on to produce Top Gun and Beverley Hills Cop, Flashdance was their first success story of many.

Jennifer Beals is quite a dancer and pretty cute. It's too bad Tatiana never really had much of a Career, like Jennifer Beals, but definitely imitation, Tatiana imitating the look of Jennifer Beals' character in "Flashdance."

Dangerous docu would be amazing! That album is so underrated and to me a classic, maybe his best if that is possible with all his masterpieces, but there is no way that any allegations would even be uttered because this is all about the makng of the album only, all about the music and the short films AND the allegations came out in late 93, two years after the album debuted.

Re: The Spike Lee BAD 25 Documentary /DVD/ TV / Theater Release [Discussion]

I loved it, screw what ratings say. They're irrelevant when it comes to modern television anyways. And comparing it to Football, which usually beats everything here in the States is pretty unfair. Anyways, as I said, I loved it, there was lots of footage I never got the chance to see before, that I saw last night. Then it got to the part where Jermaine made the announcement and then showed everyone's reactions, and tears began to flow.

Spike Lee did an amazing job with this film, IMO.

I agree. The docu blew me away. There were so many behind the scenes and insights I had nevr heard or seen before, just so so well done, soooo happy, until the end when it was so so sad but very poignant and glad it was done. Ppl in general need to realize what an amazing human being and musical treasure we lost and how the world took him for granted.

As far as the ratings, come on, surprise surprise the NFL won out- seriously, the NFL in the U.S. is like the world cup around the world. It is the most popular, most in demand entertaintment product right now, AND this was the first year where it was transmitted by NBC which is a free channel where EVERYONE can watch as opposed to previous years where the NFL network had it and only paid subscribers could watch. ANYWAY, the ratings are indeed irrelevant. It was watched by millions and got amazing reviews AND it will be watched by more millions around the world. Michael will always rule!

Re: The Spike Lee BAD 25 Documentary /DVD/ TV / Theater Release [Discussion]

Quincy didn't like Smooth Criminal. Thank god Michael kept it. I love it.

Q didn't like BJ either, can you imagine! Thank God Michael persevered and won on both occasions. Now that is another part of Michael's genius. I just can't even imagine BJ nor SC out of both albums.

Well, let's keep things in perspective.

ABC had very poor shows leading up to Bad 25: Charlie Brown had 4.0M down 33%. So BAD 25 did pick up a bit. It was ABC's highest rated show for the night. Aside from running the 30 sec commercial on the network, there was no other advertisement.

Instead of giving Randal Sullivan a primetime slot to plug his book last week, ABC could have used the 10 minutes to discuss the upcoming BAD 25 special.

There was no appearance on The View. nothing on Jimmy Kimmel. Nothing on GMA (except for a 10-second mention on Tuesday).

Gaga had a 5.5M ( and I am sure she had several appearances to plug her special) and Beyonce had a 4.2M. A 4.6 (4.5 depending on the source) isn't bad at all. I am curious to know how many DVR'd the show last night or how many are watching it on Hulu

And let's not forget the fact that several major stores open at 8PM last night, instead of the usual after midnight.

considering this year's circumstances, I think it did well enough. I hope many other people will have to opportunity to watch it on Hulu.

So basically, after watching Charlie Brown most people stayed to watch Gaga. She didn't have that disastrous "Modern Family" in between. Add to the fact this year, CB lost 1.7M viewers (CB only had 4M), so BAD had a lot to make up for.

This can be spinned anyway you want, but of course the media will use MJ's name in a negative story to grab headlines.

ETA: One last thing and the media will not point it out....Gaga LOST viewers (CB had given her a 5.7M headstart and she ended up 5.5 so 200K people tuned out) ...while Michael gained viewers. Had MJ had a nice lead-in, just like Gaga's, this would have been a different story.

One more critical thing to ponder is the fact that last year GAGA was not pitted against the NFL (football) on NBC. There was a football game but on the NFL Network which is a subscriber paid channel so not everybody was watching that game. There are many factors that played a critical role in the ratings, but the media of course won't point those out. Anyway, I think considering all these factors, Michael did just fine. I can guarantee anybody that if Michael had had a Thanksgiving special while at his peak in the 80's or 90's he would have had three times more ratings than Gaga did last year at her peak. So I am very satisfied and proud of Michael. He did more than just fine. Go Michael! You will always rule!

This documentury sounded really good. And I did try to watch it the other night. But the way that I was feeling that night. It was better that I didn't watch it. And watch Rekha's 1981 version of Umarao Jaan instead. I did tape it to watch it at another time maybe.

Exactly! And it would be totally wrong and unnecessary if it would be brought up!

But, when it comes to the HIStory album...well that's another story. Many of the songs on that album was MJ telling everyone what he went through during and after the allegations. And quite frankly I would be nervous so see a doc about it. Cause so many just don't know the details of what happen or don't care to know. They just stick to the same old he was accused, he settled and we just don't know B.S!

Re: The Spike Lee BAD 25 Documentary /DVD/ TV / Theater Release [Discussion]

The documentary was awesome! Only thing that bugged me is how it was significantly cut-down for television! Isn't 2hrs and 11 minutes long? Or more? I've heard in other countries it was like 4 hours in length. Not sure. Either way, it was still awesome to see and made my night. I really loved all the behind the scene and little tid-bit's. Hopefully it gets released on DVD, wan't to see it again!

Yeah I know I was born in the 1970's So I watched Flashdance to this day.

But could also be done in a positive way showing how Michael answered back and telling it how it was - the truth. Man History is one heck of an album, the songs are so strong in terms of sticking the middle finger up to everyone and I think the casual listener misses the meaning of the words the genius of the songs because they only hear the great music and sometimes miss the message of the songs, so a documentary explaining the songs and meaning could open some people's eyes and even us fans would learn something new.

^^True but as Blue said you will have to have someone who truly knows the details so that the whole piece is meaningful and people get the true picture of what happened and how the songs were a reaction to that. Now if the producer finds some knowledgeable fans for input, it should work nicely. However, if we get someone who does not do good research, thinks he knows everything then it would be another lost opportunity.

Re: The Spike Lee BAD 25 Documentary /DVD/ TV / Theater Release [Discussion]

So is there actually footage of Michael in the studio for all his albums there must be!!!!! obviously there's Bad footage and we've seen some footage from Captain EO (we are here to save the world) and we've seen studio footage of We are the World, we've also seen some History studio footage I think it was from Scream were he throws a chair or something like that, and then there's the what more can I give studio footage and All in your name with Barry Gibb, so surly there's Off the wall, Thriller and Dangerous footage??

Re: The Spike Lee BAD 25 Documentary /DVD/ TV / Theater Release [Discussion]

Michael seemed to document everything in his life. There are probably hours and hours and hours of all sorts of footage, concerts, home movies, etc etc

Can you believe what Friedman is saying about Taraborrelli and Vogel? I can't believe he hasn't read Vogel's book. And it's not true that it sold as bad as Sullivan's.

Also his remark about surgeries... There's nothing even suggesting this in the full version of the film.

So Roger would have rather had tabloid trash in this docu (like in about a gazillion other MJ "documentaries") than someone talking about the music? Because tabloid trash is the only thing Taraborelli could have provided. I'm glad that Spike didn't have him on his film.

Re: The Spike Lee BAD 25 Documentary /DVD/ TV / Theater Release [Discussion]

Taraborrelli usually gave mostly positive comments about Michael on TV and especially so after his death. However his realm his always been Michael's personal life rather than his art, so Roger's suggestion that he should have replaced Vogel in a film devoted to MJ's music is simply ridiculous.

Sounds like the real issue is that he's mad that nobody cares about HIS opinion, they didn't even bother sending him an advanced screening of the documentary. Not surprised he doesn't know who Joe is, it's not like Roger actually has an interest in Michael's music.

Who gives a shit of what roger Friedman think about anything regarding Michael. Let him bark! If i am not in this forum, i dont even know who This irrelevant vile ass is. Only people here like to post what he said and give these non life attention.
