The problems with Invincible

There's a part in Frank Cascio's book where MJ talked to him about Invincible and he told Frank that he felt frustrated that people didn't "get it." And he said "it was ahead of its time, ten or twenty years from now people will understand it."

I do think Michael was proud of the album. He was too much of a perfectionist to put something out that he didn't believe in.

Well it's 15 years on and not sure I understand it anymore :)

Anyway, music should be for the now & the future. Doesn't make much sense to make an album that only the next generation will get!

^ Michael may have not been dead on with where he thought music styling was going. "10-20 years" but production was pretty on point... the early 00s music was at a crossroad and he took the album where he believed it was going.. Much of the production used in that album is what people use every day now..

I could bet if that same exact album was released 2010-2016 it would have been welcomed more... Now since overall album sales have dropped I can't say it would sell more, but believe it would have gotten more attention and praise.

Ironically a more classic MJ sound with real instruments & a stunning voice would have been more on point in regards to where music is now.

Off The Wall influence is everywhere and the biggest hits e.g. Uptown Funk shadow pure classic Michael.

Plus the biggest artists & albums are singer/songwriters with a definitive style e.g. Ed Sheeran & Adele.

I assume the fans who hate The Lost Children for being too sappy, also hate Heal The World, We Are The World and Childhood as well?

Correct :D And You Are My Life and Speechless too. I actually don't mind TLC that much but it would've been better without the children's choir and the dialogue at the end, makes it a bit cringeworthy imo.

my favorite part about TLC is the children's choir. it's so beautiful and blissful ^_^ the first time I heard it, I fell in love with it instantly, and it became my very favorite song from the album

Speechless and The Lost Children are the two best songs on Invincible. Yeah, I said it, and I don't care how ''uncool'' it makes me look

Speechless is phenomenal. The Lost Children... less so. I've posted this before, but might as well jump back into the discussion:

Invincible has some killer tracks on it but overall gives off the impression that Michael was, for the first time, desperate to stay relevant. He always seemed to set the precedent for pop music and demand others to follow in his tracks simply because he was so damn good at it, but Invincible makes it seem like his age and the length of his career got to him and forced him to let others take the lead.

Most of the album would stand up quite well had it been recorded by anyone else. There's nothing substantially wrong with the composition or songwriting on most tracks, but given that we're dealing with Michael Jackson, everything just comes off as mediocre.

Privacy is the sole exception. If Michael Jackson can't save that, no one can.

Am I the only person who cannot hear even an iota of Michael in Uptown Funk? That one is classic Prince.

I would better reference Michael in Can't Feel My Face or Take Back the Night or even Get Lucky.

Uptown Funk reminds me of The Jacksons. Shake Your Body Down To The Ground, Dancing Machine, etc.

The only songs that i do not care for on the album are Privacy and 2000 Watts.

Something I've noticed with me and Invincible, is that I never go out of my way to listen to that entire album from start to finish. If my iPod is on shuffle and one of the songs happens to come on, I'll listen to it, but listening to the entire album from start to finish is something I haven't done in years. But I've always kept going back to his previous albums

I could listen to Invincible from start to finish if it had a tracklist of only the next 9 songs:

01 Heartbreaker (But a lot shorter than it is)
02 Beautiful Girl
03 Whatever Happens
04 Break Of Dawn
05 You Rock My World (without the spoken intro)
06 Fall Again
07 Unbreakable
08 The Way You Love Me
09 Don’t Walk Away

Since the song ‘Invincible’ is not on my tracklist, the name of this album would probably have been ‘Heartbreaker’, or ‘Unbreakable’…
In fact… This –to me- would have been a very good album.

Exactly, that's how I know (for me) it's his worst album. I know I haven't listened all the at through since 2009.

I struggle with too many songs.

And between OTW thru HIStory there may be 2 I would skip altogether.

Tried listening to Privacy today, to see if there was something about it I missed, or if it would have grown on me. But, no. Privacy, in my opinion is the worst song that MJ has ever released. What the hell was MJ thinking when he included that on Invincible?

to me beautiful girl is the worst that Ive heard from an MJ release (so yeah we are all different)... Would have liked it to be leaked but I don't even think its worth using on ultimate collection, Its the only MJ song I can say that I've only listened a handful of times.

oh, I don't know? maybe getting the ever so important message out, that he felt so strongly about, and did everything he could to try to make people understand in every way he could. you know, the one thing that if it didn't exists he wouldn't be so misjudged. and the best way he could express himself was through his songs....I hate when people say they hate privacy, but they completely ignore the message of the song
anyway, to me, it's a lot better than tabloid junkie, because it's easier to hear (for someone whose first language isn't english), what he's singing. tabloid junkie I have no idea what he's singing half the time, unless I'm looking at the lyrics while listening to it

To be fair, a message of a song shouldn't make anyone like it any more than they do. A song is either good or not.

To be honest Privacy is one of my favourite songs on Invincible, sounds more like an MJ song than 90% of the rest of the album.

On the contrary, people are perfectly aware of the message of ‘Privacy’ & that was one of the main problems of that album.

In other words, ‘Invincible’ should not have acted as a reminder of his public image. We should not forget that his previous album ('HIStory’) made that very clear & in a variety of ways (for example, the child’s notes ‘stop reporters from bothering MJ’).

MJ should have moved on leaving all those issues (paparazzi, public image, etc.) behind him &, by all accounts, ‘Invincible’ failed to do that.

But despite this, musically ‘Privacy’ is in no way included in the weakest songs on that album, & personally I liked a lot the idea of the haunting/ghostly vocal style.

Even though its one of my favourite songs on the album, I don't know why he felt he needed to include the guy saying "Michael, can I get one snapshot, please?".

The one time on an album I was like "Man are you SERIOUS?!" throwing a fan who wants a photo with him in the same category as the press- other guys in the intro. Thought it was a bit rich.

Other than that, great song.

he/she asked what Michael was thinking when he included that song on the album, and I explained why
and no, of course you shouldn't like a song only because of the message, that's not what I meant. it's one thing that you don't like it, but to ask what the hell he was thinking when including it on the album? a song with a message about something that was so important to him? the answer to that should be obvious (if you're a fan, it should be, anyway), but he/she seem to ignore that

My apologies, picked you up wrong then. I see your point now.

isn't the guy saying that a paparazzi photographer?? that's what I've always thought, since it's there...never thought about it was a fan

I don't particularly rate it highly, but I wouldn't go as far as to say it's the worst song he ever put out. I personally would rank it above songs such as Girlfriend, CLHGA, SDMW and Come Together. But then I am a sucker for MJs rockier tracks. Loads of fans slate D.S. but I love that song, and would put it in my top 10 on HIStory.

Privacy better than Girlfriend, Can't Let Her Get Away, She Drives Me Wild and Come Together? I'm gonna take some Aspirin and lie down

I've always wondered that too. I've never actually seen it as a pap but more so just a fan asking for a picture with a famous singer.

I don't hate Privacy, I'm pretty indifferent about it. I suppose I can see why some people were getting a bit tired of the subject matter by the time of Invincible's release. It reminds me of when the Bad 25 Bonus Disc track-listing was released and the song "Price of Fame" appeared, I remember some people on here going "Ugh, is this really ANOTHER song about the paparazzi?".

Personally I really don't know what to think when it comes to that matter. I did type out some more after this but my attempt at an answer really went no-where and returned to the exact same conclusion that begun the sentence before this.

The reason why I dislike Privacy so much is because I just find it boring.

Yeah, I've just always been a fan that saw the Horror theme and Paparazzi themes to be a given in MJ's work. Never complained about it as long as the song was good. Which in all cases, has turned out true for me.

If the paparazzi hounding had stopped in 92, then I'd be like "why are you still singing about these photographers from the early 90s" but it was something he faced day to day. He just wrote what he felt and experienced I suppose?

I agree!

To tell you the truth, this whole spoken intro & the ‘You Rock My World’ spoken one are listed in the lowest points on that album. For me, the decision to include both of them is inexcusable.

Generally, when it comes to tabloid media/paparazzi, I have to say that the video concept of ‘Leave Me Alone’ remains insurmountable.

Leave Me Alone isn't really a tabloid songs. The video turned it into that, but the song itself isn't
