Gaga IMO has been focusing on such side-projects lately because her lost commercially aimed album flopped. I think she probably realized what she's been doing does not work for her any more and now is trying to reinvent herself, her music and her image now as a "serious artist" instead of just some pop fad, and I think she does have the talent to do that. I also remember when Adele's 21 was released and blew up big many people pointed out how that means people are fed up with "gimmick artists such as Gaga" (Gaga was often used as kind of the negative antidote to Adele). I guess Gaga realizes that now and is trying reinvent herself. I think the Bowie tribute is probably one step on that way. I guess her new album will be pretty different to her past commercial albums too. But this is not really about that.

Many actually have the theory that Gaga used all the over-the-top, eye-grabbing clothes etc as a way to help market herself and make herself stand out among the other artists when she was starting out as Gaga and you know, it worked really well.

Wearing wild outfits really became her thing and made her stand out so much, other artists like Nicki Minaj, Rihanna and Katy Perry began to follow and started wearing bizarre outfits (just not as well imho). Of course now everyone knows her name now so she is able to strip it back down and reveal who she really is to those who couldn't see pass the wacky outfits (which kinda like you said, was often used against her by some critics). Whichever way she goes fashion-wise, I don't mind because she looks great either way! She has some really good music so I'm looking forward to whatever she does on this new album, but you're right, this isn't really much on topic so I'll end it here

Bowie himself has never been a big seller

I read it's estimated he sold 140,000,000 records over his lifetime. I'm aware he wasn't ya know, Beatles or MJ big for sales but he still did pretty alright. I can't really comment on the Celine Dion thing because I don't really remember that specific performance myself (but my general opinion is that I'm happy with who they picked, I'm just happy for tributes in the first place ya know? He got some pretty awesome tributes - my favourite being the 2009 VMAs!)

I was going by his album sales which are usually in Gold range at max. (there are a couple passing Platinum - his biggest seller being 3 million in the US): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Bowie_discography

I have no idea how they made 140 million out of that. I know, I know this claim is for worldwide sales but still. Perhaps it's true, but I came to realize that such claims are exaggerated for most artists in such magazine articles though.

You are not reading either, I see, because I did address that pointing out that Gaga is not exactly on top now either. She may be again, but her last effort flopped.

Well, you whole argument is that somehow those artists were not good enough to tribute Michael Jackson. I think that talking like that about someone like Smokey is pretty much pissing on him. The guy is a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Inductee (one of the first ones to be inducted), a Grammy winner and last but not least has plenty of connection with MJ. Give me Smokey Robinson any time over Lady Gaga, current hipness or not. But that's just my view, some may prefer Gaga, but it does not really matter. None is worth less than the other.

lolz. Yes it was his idea. And he told the grammys i'm performing michael jackson's song from the album his estate is re-issuing this month and i'm doing it for free. Lolz. That's not how things work out. He was hired by the estate and grammys or just grammys but with the approval of the estate. It's actually promo for album re-release and spike lee's doc and usually promotion is being paid by record company so it is possible that epic records/sony music hired him.

TBH in Gaga's defence, after Artpop (2013) didn't do so as well, she's been much more low-key in the music industry. She revealed that in 2013 she had actually been quite depressed for sometime and I remember reading around the time that she wanted to shift her focus on what she wanted to do, not what critics or even fans wanted her to do (essentially meaning she didn't want to really focus on modern pop).

So she started working with another huge inspiration of hers on an album that wouldn't be mainstream, a traditional jazz album with Tony Bennett. Let's be honest, there's not really any artist who could sell a lot of music in that style (in the last couple of decades anyway). My friends and I are quite big Lady Gaga fans and we've bought almost all her albums, but not even we bought that album.

On top of that, she's focused on more theatrical work, focusing on some film roles and, perhaps most notably, playing a major role in American Horror Story this past year or so. So you're right about her not being at her prime musically, and I'm not arguing with you or saying you're wrong... more so just providing context, but it's largely been her choice as she has deliberately focused on less-sellable music as well as acting roles in the entertainment industry.

Lady Gaga's an incredible performer, I've been seeing her gain many new fans this past year. Fans who never would've given her the time of day but have after seeing her jaw-dropping tribute to The Sound of Music and most recently her performance of the American National Anthem. It's great to see people look behind the outfit (helps she's kicked back on them 2 years ago) and realise what an incredible musician she is. I'm pretty keen for her tribute to David Bowie and honestly, I'm pretty excited for her to return to modern pop music this year. She's still very much a big name and I think she has great potential to return to the top once again.

Agree! Lady Gaga is a superb performer! My girlfriend has been a massive fan since day one but I really only discovered how talented she was by watching videos of her bar gigs before she was signed and her performances with Tony Bennett on TV special were just phenomonal. I think she's a brilliant choice for a Bowie tribute. I've not seen her performances on AHS yet as I've only seen season one but I hear she's excellent in it. Some of her songs, and the way she tended to over do the "eccentric" thing, has in the past annoyed me but I always thought she was very talented.

Wow-this is great news! I'd been hearing about the Bowie tribute and the Eagles honoring Glen Frey, but didn't expect this.
I've seen Miguel a couple of times and he's a good singer. I am surprised he hasn't hit bigger.
I hope they do something great for Natalie Cole.

Part of his performance had him jumping across the stage over the pit filled with fans
and he landed on 2 female fans heads. It was ugly.

Also it's really interesting how Chris Brown is an INCREDIBLE dancer but even he struggles to pull off the moonwalk even close to as smoothly as Michael Jackson did. I don't mean it as an insult or anything - because like I said, he's one hell of a great dancer - but it really makes you appreciate how effortlessly and flawless Michael was able to pull it off (though I'm sure more practise would help Chris).

Totally get him breaking down at the end though Love how the whole crowd just joined in and took over for him (which isn't so easily heard due to the setup but you can easily tell by their mouths and the faint background audio). I remember shortly after his death, at my high school's assembly, one guy did this huge tribute to Michael. It's the only performance I've seen where people actually stood up to applaud him, they stood up earlier to see him moonwalk better and they remained standing! Clapping along and even singing along, cheers filled the hall and he did many iconic Michael moves, it was fantastic! I remember during TWYMMF the dancer even brought up one of his guy friends, who was wearing a wig and pink dress so they could replicate the sequence :lol:

As sad as I was that Michael was gone (and how surreal it really felt at the time...), it was really nice to see the overwhelming tributes to him.

Talking about this year's Grammy tributes. Some tabloid media reported yeterday that while the Grammys are going to tribute David Bowie, Glenn Frey and Lemmy of Motörhead they won't tribute Natalie Cole and Maurice White. This prompted a round of racism allegations against the Grammys. To me it's very difficult to believe that they would pull something like this after the Oscar backlash and since this is coming from publications such as Page Six and the Daily Fail I refuse to believe it until I see it. It would be really disrespectful to those black legends if it was true.

Others already pointed out since that apparently the remaining Earth Wind and Fire members DO prepare a Maurice White tribute. And there are speculations of Beyoncé performing something in honor of Natalie Cole maybe. I really don't think the Grammys would pull such an insensitive thing at this time of #OscarSoWhite etc.

I didn't like Beyonce's performance (or the song itself) at all! Bruno saved the Superbowl. He was brilliant, amazing.
