I Am a Fan, But... (What Makes You Heretic Among Other Fans?)

Either way, I really do understand and it's fine lol. I will always appreciate that if nothing else you understand why I would sacrifice my entire being to see Michael during Bad (well...maybe not to that degree, but you know what I"m saying).
Sacrificing (sp?) your entire being for, let's say, Tokyo (black top) makes total sense to me. I'm picturing Michael at that show right now (I may have watched it, oh, I dunno, once or twice) doing some freestyle dancing and, yeah, sacrifice away! I mean, you might wanna nominate Wembley 1988 instead but my point still stands.

Gotta say, trying to decide if it makes sense to sideline BWT 1987 for Triumph or Victory, it's a nice problem to have.

NO ONE ABSOLUTELY NO ONE.

Jk. He's fine lol.
:ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO:

I had to settle for the "sad" react when what I wanted was something that would demonstrate my utter devastation of having lost you to the earlier tours! :ROFLMAO: I thought we were in on this together! I feel abandoned and am not sure how I will recover!

It's ok...I get it... I will just sell my soul alone. It's fine. If I'm alone I'll have a better chance of sneaking back stage and making Michael fall in love with me so, I can live with that ☺️
ha ha, its so funny to see you guys going crazy about Bad and earlier, and I am sitting here in my corner thinking about Dangerous :) I still have not crossed over to Bad, don't know if I will.

Maybe it will pass (sorry, who's Marlon?)
Good to have you back :)

LMAO literally any version of Michael from 1986-1990 I would straight up ruin my entire life for. But I could probably extend that date range to most of his life too lol.

Anyway, this has gotten out of hand. I'm sorry. I don't know how to be in public.

The Jacksons variety show is underrated, and displays Michael's evolution as a performer
I one hundred percent agree about the Jackson variety shows. It was a wonder to watch Michael become what he did back in real time. He may not of enjoyed it, but no perfectionist enjoys not having enough rehearsal time. I think most of his education there shows up in the videos that he did later.
You are very fortunate to have watched those shows in real time. I hope that we'll get an official worldwide release one day.

It was an example of Michael's acting ability which prepared him for 'The Wiz'; he convinced me he was having a whale of a time! I like to think it was the comedy, canned laughter, sets, and how rushed the process was, that Michael disliked. Rather than the dance numbers themselves. I'd still like to know who choreographed 'Get Happy'!

It was the dancing that lived up to the 'variety' title; from tap, to popping and locking (years before he met Jeffry Daniels), robot, the splits, and Broadway style routines that he would return to later on with 'Beat It'. It was interesting to see his hopping with the back leg, evolve into the skipping with the front. Of course, we can't forget the trademark, and my favourite, tornado spin! 'On the wall' was one of my favourite segments.

I also loved hearing him sing 'I'll Be There' as the closing. He learned to adjust his new voice to the old songs.

He was a warm and personable host. Probably the most that he ever interacted on that level with an audience.

His teen years were trial and error, and he stepped to the challenge with a smile on his face, and passed with flying colours!

I see so many posts wishing that Michael did more live singing, engaged with the audience more, tried different moves, stripped things down, etc. Truth is, he did it all. You just have to broaden your minds and be wiling to look closer to the root..
Inspired by these comments, I've just started watching the variety shows. I'm still on Episode 1 but I'm having a blast. 🙂

I've seen photos and fragments from the shows but never made the effort to view them properly. From what I've seen so far it's worth my time.

I loved the performances and dance numbers a lot of the shows, lots of variety, hence the name the jacksons variety show 😜
The skits and humour and all is a bit bland and it gets repetitive after a few episodes but big thumbs up for the music and dance stuff!
There’s lots of rare performances like blues away, world of sunshine, style of life, dreamer, what you don’t know etc!

Oh, that sounds good.

The skits I'm guessing will be a lot like the stuff they did on all those tv shows, Bob Hope, Carol Burnett etc. Not really my kind of thing, tbh, but interesting, nevertheless. Partly bc it's interesting to see Michael doing stuff beyond his core talents of dancing and singing. What I mean is, it helps me understand how and why he was so keen to be in films. It also helps me to see the development of his performing skills.

That clip where Michael was tap dancing, I'm guessing this is where it came from? I never did get around to chasing that up.

Ooh, lots for me to look forward to. Gotta be happy about that. :D

Just listened to CGOOTR for the first time. I really enjoyed it. :ROFLMAO:

I'm not sure this really qualifies as 'heresy' but there seem to be a lot of peeps who are not looking forward to CGOOTR being included in T40. Disappointed doesn't even come close to covering it. Me, though? Well, I just had a blast listening to it so I'd be fine with it being on there.

This!! I feel exactly the same!

😂 the complain about CGOOTR is more in lines of it's not really a song or it's not a rarity or it's already released, which I find ridiculous, but the feelings are quite strong (I am still laughing at 'let's get the disappointment out of the way') so on this community of hard core fans it does make you a heretic. Me, even more so since I have not heard it yet and I will wait for the "disappointment" to hear it officially 😂

While you say that you have not heard this song, I sit and think, is this the name (CGOOTR) or is it an abbreviation, I don’t remember this and I can’t find it, I still don’t know everything from this world 😂

CGOOTR = Can't get out of the rain. It was part of Wiz in some way, and fans feel very strongly about the song. 😂 That's all I know.

oh thank you my saving army 🙃
I only watched individual excerpts of Wiz, the whole thing has not yet reached the movie

If it helps I only know a handful of the leaked songs. I only heard Can't Get Out of the Rain twice. The first time because it popped up randomly on YouTube. The second because I liked it and wanted to hear it again 😛

The song itself is not in the wiz. In The Wiz he sings "You Can't Win." CGOOTR is just super similar, I think. I'm not sure if there is any *direct* relation to The Wiz aside from how similar it is. Hopefully someone more knowledgeable can pop in and explain this to me.

oh, I get it. I understand why peeps are not enthusiastic about it or about having it included on T40. But I had a great time listening to it. The complaint that 'it's not really a song' does confuse me a bit, ngl. I thought that meant it was a mere snippet but it's 4 mins. Seems fine to me.

Since we are discussing The Wiz, I adore the movie but only for Michael. I find any scenes without him to be kind of a drag. But honestly, he BEYOND lights up the screen. He is so charismatic, earnest, and endearing. I first saw it as a child but forgot until I saw it again this summer that I had a big crush on "the scarecrow" for a couple weeks after seeing it in music class in school. My family was so over me singing Ease on Down the Road all over the house.

20-something years later, here I am lol

I haven't watched the film. But I love this photo. Makes me laugh every time I see it. :D

The cutest photo!

I am not sure what you'd think of the film but I have no doubt you'd adore Michael in it. It's impossible not to. He is beyond charming 😍
I've seen various fragments and they don't make me wanna watch the whole thing. You know me, I'm not a completist. I'm not bothered if I don't see or hear every single thing he ever did. I might get to The Wiz some day. I never expected to see the day when I would proactively choose to listen to OTW (the song). I haven't listened to it loads but it's on my radar now and it never used to be. So who knows re The Wiz. It might happen. One day, lol.

Omgggg it was meant to be! 😂

For what it's worth, I have my own kinda-similar-but-not-really moment: This was shortly after Michael had passed away, and I was reading a teen girl mag (I was 17 at the time). I was going through the reader's letters parts where some magazine person would respond (you know the ones). One of the letters was from a 12 year old girl who was very sad that Michael Jackson had passed away. She also said, "I think I might've developed a crush on him, but he's dead... And I find it difficult." (awwww 😭) I remember thinking at the time, "...huh. A crush on Michael Jackson... I guess I could kinda see that."

Only "kinda"?? OMG past self, you absolute dingus. 🤣 But yeah, I guess subconsciously I understood his appeal even back then.

... Well, and of course I've always found late '70s Michael cute. But that was the first time I acknowledged his appeal from after that time.

I became a fan because I developped a crush on his sisters.

just kidding I became a fan after I heard can’t get out of the rain while watching photos of his sisters

Just to remind everyone this is a 'heretics' thread!
