The Discussion of MJ's Unreleased Tracks

And which title rolls off the tongue better? Chicago nineteen fourty-five or Chicago Nights? It'd be a good change here. Besides, let's not act like the song isn't already being altered against MJ's will when Porcaro himself has been making changes to the song for 10 years now.
Bro truthfully I don't care either way. I never care about either name change. I think we're just that badly starved that we gotta quibble about names they pick based on lyrics.

What was the story behind Fly Away? That seems finished. That was recorded at Westlake, right? How close was that song to being put on the BAD album?
I love Fly Away. I think Michael did a fantastic job on it, as did Rebbie in her own right. I would have loved if this was on the final Bad album. This is in my top 5 for the Bad era outtakes, behind Streetwalker & Price Of Fame.

There's little to no information on which unreleased tracks (except SW & PoF) have been definitely worked on at Westlake, especially after work on the album had officially begun on January 5, 1987.

I think Streetwalker is the only one that made it to WL….I can’t remember if it was Bruce, Brad or Rob but they confirmed it was little to no outtakes from Bad besides SW and everything else was cut during pre production

Personally, I think Chicago 1945 is a better title as it indicates the setting and historical context- the lyrics about the 1945 World’s Fair, Al Capone, etc tie into that. Chicago Nights, obviously, does not do that. I also disagree with whoever said Chicago Nights is the better title, it’s too generic for me.

Not really about a specific track, but anyone knows what year this early Dangerous songs list could've been from?
I never knew Teddy worked on Don’t Be Messin’ Round, hopefully we’ll hear it eventually!

In situations where there is a song with a bunch of variations and reworks, I think a fun and engaging idea would be to reissue a bunch of them as individual singles/EPs, and include as many alternate cuts as B-sides. For example:

“Best of Joy” - EP
1. 2010 Album Version
2. 1981 Demo (“The Toy”)
3. 1991 Demo
4. 2008 Demo

“Little Susie” - EP
1. 1995 Album Version
2. 1978 Demo
3. 1995 Live Orchestra Version

i'd love to see something like this with don't be messin' 'round tbh. it's not my fav really but since there's a version made for almost every album it'd be fun to see the song's evolution

This album would've been all over the place had this been the final list

Anyone have the other side of the page?

also i don't really think this would be the track list, maybe just a list of songs he considered finishing
I'm sure it would've been rearranged to be cohesive but some of these songs would clash if they were together on an album....I also wonder what that duet is....the leak from Brad showed a Janet/MJ duet from 1990

So did Mike present Q and Bruce with the 30 odd demos he had worked on by January 1987, then between the three of them picked the 12 they felt were strong enough to work on?

If that's the case, I'm not sure how much credit the "A Team" deserve for the Bad album. Sounds more like polishing than producing in my book

To set the record straight on both your posts, that was a work list from late 1990/early 1991, not a real tracklist. And the "MA and MJ duet" refers to the original plan for In the Closet, which was meant to have a feature from Madonna.

I still can't get over how TDCAU was made in the Dangerous era, and on top of that (I think Matt Forger was the one who said it?) it's basically the same as the HIStory version. The mid 80's-early 90's was MJ's most creative era.

Agreed. Though Chicago Nights sounds smoother, 1945 gives more meaning to the title. Chicago 1945 puts me directly into the setting just by reading the title. Chicago Nights can be a modern day Chicago nightlife meaning for all I know

Also agreed. The EPs potentials are huge for MJ imo and would be a great way to "milk" songs because Michael often have demos and alt. versions available of songs, spanning not over just a few years, but decades.

But this is something they should've done long ago. Not too late, but a lot of potential releases are gone due to versions being released over time.

Imagine a simple nice EP with a song, different versions, direct words from people who worked on the songs. Maybe some HQ photos. Maybe videos. Just, release anything related to it, that exist. I'm not saying I'm going to bang my head for each version, every day. But it's an interesting way of release and showcasing Mike's art.

Simultaneously, they can work on albums/cds with more songs if they want

Yeah I know it's not a real track list.....just saying if it was, that would've been all over the place. As far as the duet goes, I remember the discussion of MJ and Madge working on the song but there was also a Janet duet around the same time

is there two songs named stay or is it the same one??
Two separate songs.

Is the above one registered to Mijac Music? I’ve noticed any songwriter named Michael Jackson gets lumped together in the Copyright Office. Most of MJ’s 1980s filings are listed with Mijac.

Even some of the songs MJ registered don’t seem to contain his vocals. “Stand Tall,” “Shut Up and Dance,” and “Thank Heaven” are all sung by unidentified session vocalists. God knows how many others. Very odd.

Imagine if the Estate opened a random vault somewhere and found 6 albums worth of unreleased material 😩

Knowing them they probably still mess it up somehow

It's not really a surprise that their focus isn't on unreleased music but it's a shame, I was expecting them to release a new album/single along with the biopic. It's weird that Branca says this when we know that the estate in talks with producers for a new album, maybe there is something planned eventually but he's just covering it for now? Those are the same words he said when asked about new music a few years ago while they were in fact working on new singles.
