This is one of my favorite songs on Invincible. It has great vocals. fantastic melody and great lyrics. It's just a beautifully written and composed song. I don't understand why wo many fans dislike it. Some call it cheesy but if writing a song that's full of beauty and awesome melodies is cheesy then i guess i'm a fan of cheesy music.

Besides the songs that are in the mainstream right now are way way way more cheesier than The Lost Children.

This and Speechless have always been my favourites from Invincible. I also don't understand why so many fans call it cheesy. It's not as if Heal The World is a death metal anthem but I never hear anybody calling that cheesy.

Michael's heart is all over The Lost Children and it is one of the few songs on the album which I feel came from an honest place within Michael. People who understand Michael the man, will appreciate the beauty and sincerity of this song. Not to mention it is musically one of the most interesting pieces on the album. It reminds me of an Irish waltz with that 3/4 time signature. I also particularly love the end section after the final chorus... the part with the flutes and all the forest sound effects - it's really quite enchanting and mystical. For such a sweet and sentimental song it ends in almost a sinister way with the music having faded, night time drawing in and the child saying "It's getting late, I think we better go home now."

Michael had such a vivid imagination and was a master at setting a scene in his songs. You can just close your eyes and conjure up so much imagery listening to his work. What he may have lacked in technical ability he more than made up for with his unique imagination. Nobody else could write a song like The Lost Children other than Michael.

I so agree with you.

The vocals it's the first thing that caught me.
It's sounds so effortless, like he's just talking, probably with the same voice he uses to order some KFC

I love his voice in that song.

The instrumental sounds like some cheesy Bollywood/Indian style ballad which I happen to not be a big fan of... and by that I mean I don't like any sort of Indian music/movies etc. I dunno, call me cultural insensitive if you will, but that's just my opinion.

Also, I think it sounds like a Heal The World re-make just like Cry sounds like a Man In The Mirror re-make. Both of which I'm not really a big fan of. I think they both lack in originality.

His vocals are great, the lyrics are sweet but the melody and the feeling it gives you aren't that special, at least for my liking.

Please, don't take offense to anything I just said. I'm just not a big fan of it, sorry!

Kind regards, Andrey!

The arrangement is wonderful, I love listening through a decent headset, good flac etc.

I swear that my heart opens just a bit wider in that bridge like "I see the door simply wide open"- on 'door' you that cello coming in, going up- and that moment right there is like being gently pinched by two fat cherubs, I love it.

Great post! :punk:

I love "The Lost Children." It's one of my favorite songs from Invincible as well.

It's a beautiful and relevant piece. I absolutely adore it. People don't appreciate it because, in my humblest of opinions, they have no taste in music. This song is one of the most important, necessary, and amazing songs I have ever heard. The sincerity of the words is immediately apparent--something which is forever lost in recent mainstream music.

In a hurry here, you said what I was meaning to.

My heart simply is soaring when I listen to this...

I bet if it were a hot summer booty-shaker, then the likes and ratings this song would have soared most considerably. .....

Not really. You see, the people who don't like it... Well, I'll just speak for myself here and say that it's not about that the song is slow and cheesy and whatever, which in the end it isn't I agree. I think Michael made wonderful ballads and inspirational/touching songs... I'm a big fan of Heal The World, Man In The Mirror, Earth Song, etc... I just think The Lost Children failed to rise to the level of Michael's previous similar songs, I guess. I can't say I actually dislike it, as a matter of fact I like it, but not as much as some of his other songs... Again, call me a person with no taste in music whatsoever if you will, but that's just my opinion.

I know your love for The Lost Children...I've heard you describe it before and because of that (and this post of yours) you've made me look at it in a whole different way..I never disliked the song, but I appreciate it more now...It's sweet and full of heart...Something only Michael Jackson can write and that makes it magic just for that :)

The Lost Children, You Are My Life, and Speechless all hold very special places in my heart. Why? Because I know they came straight from Michael's own heart, and the melodies/lyrics/instrumentals all work beautifully together to create what Michael was looking for: a way for his listeners to feel what he felt. These songs contain similar messages, yet each one is different from the other and unique in its own presentation. I feel a certain sadness when I hear these three songs, yet I also feel a mixture of joy and serenity. It's hard to explain...

Thank you...this is beautiful. I feel the same way, and I also agree that these were among the best in the Invincible album.

I know what you mean...What I love about his music is that no matter what he's evoking, we all can feel it...Universally, that's what his music does...It connects people...You don't have to try and explain what the music does, because subconsciously, we are all feeling what he's evoking and it connects us...:)

its one of my top 10 songs ever from michael... its just good because its more simple than like heal the world.. which i like less... less is more is a good way
and ofcourse those melodys when i hear then i get tears in my eyes, and choke up, and the lyrics are greet, also speechless same thing..
but my alltime fav for this kind of songs is still earth song, speciale when he sang it live at brunei

Brad Buxer hated it.
I like it, but perhaps the production is somewhat cheesy.

It's the type of song I would never dream of being caught alive listening to it whilst other people were in the same room. 🤮

It's cheesy as hell but MJ had a few tracks that were very cheesy,

I do like the vocals but the song really sucks! 100% a guilty pleasures song for some though.

Speechless is another that I find pretty cheesy. His vocals are amazing and I love the verses but once the chorus kicks in I cringe!

It is a very pretty melody, certainly more impressive than your basic pop music. Idk, they get away with a lot less interesting stuff melodically these days, I can't complain about this song. Maybe the subject matter is people's problem with it, but that's what makes this song honestly as compelling. Nobody actually makes songs about stuff like this, that's the problem with the world, people just don't care like they should.

I am in love with this song!
I'm completely besotted with it.

I love the melody, it's charming and gentle and daydream-y and soothing and uplifting.

Good point.

So many good points here.

Maybe people do make songs like this but are they in the mainstream? Doesn't seem so.

Like any good song TLC has so many layers. There's the pretty melody but the awful subject matter - which itself can be interpreted in several ways. Actual missing children but also our own lost 'inner' child, for starters. But that spoken bit right at the end, where the kid says, it's dark, it's time to go home now. The picture of two small kids in a forest - it's like a malevolent fairy tale. Babes In The Wood or Hansel and Gretel. Spooky, threatening, uncertain, no guarantee of a happy ending.

I've had a lot of resistance, over the years, to the kids' choir bc kids' voices just bore the pants off me, for the most part. When they are singing, I mean, not generally! But as part of the song's construction, it does make sense.

Wonderful song.

I wonder if tlc was specifically written for Invincible or if it was just a resurrected title.

I can easily imagine Michael writing this song around the same period he did LS & BNA.

I know many don't like they song and think it's corny, too sweet etc.

But I have always liked the song a lot. - Also MJ must have liked the song. There are more videos of him singing it - with fans, and with his children making a puzzle if I remember correct.

Kinda sounds like you're scared of intense emotional outbursts and things that may make you feel vulnerable.

Now come on now...

There are certain MJ slow/ballads that I love. She's out of my life, lady in my life, will you be there, gone too soon. I can go on..

It's the cheese factor, I can't stand.
