"Michael", a biopic about Michael Jackson, is officially happening.

Well hell... for the time being.... they could at least give us the short films in 4k
This is their most important project - the renewed interest the biopic will bring, they need to be in order and ready. We know Bad's film reels have been scanned and sat since at least 2012. What on earth could be holding that up?!

I've been hoping that they'll make something worthwhile for HIStory 30 in order to make up for the delay. The Estate usually makes an announcement for anniversary releases on the month of May so we should be hearing more about it very soon.

I'm curious if they do make this a two parter, if they go beyond 93 or just finish there? If they have enough footage for a 4 hour cut, surely they don't need to film more.

There won't be anything BEFORE the biopic.
We already know there's gonna be a 30th anniversary celebration of HIStory, the real question is whether it'll be more than just cheap merchandises or not. They've also stated on their FAQ page that they had plans for HIStory 25 but had to get shelved due to Covid, but they're still holding onto said plans.

And the biopic doesn't necessarily stop the Estate from working on other things, they released the remastered short films from Off The Wall not long ago.

You are right in that regard, that they will do supplemental stuff. All in preparation for the big release they are focusing on - which is the biopic.
They'll update some videos that will get increased clicks when the movie hits. They'll update their merchandise. And maybe there will be even a revised discography, with a new set (think "The Collection") so that a potential new costumer can get his hand's on the studio albums with one simple buy for example.

But there won't be a major new release BEFORE the biopic. Maybe coinciding with the biopic, or shortly after, to capitalize on a potential hype & on the marketing campaign from the movies release. I'm not talking about a new shirt, or calendar, a new POP toy, or poster, cause there's a constant flow of that kind of stuff..

Now what would be a "major" release? I'm talking "Thriller 40" level or bigger - won't happen!
In other words: No new music, no unreleased/unheard material (and be it as low key as "Who Do Know" & "Lovely Way") before the biopic.

This of course is my opinion, but I would be shocked if anything remotely different will transpire.

One thing I’ll say is that once this movie comes out , enjoy the moment because nothing will be as big as this era again.

It should help boost MJ’s popularity even further and all the press/ interviews, hype trailers etc - movie reactions , it will be all over TikTok and X and he will have a career high peak not seen since 09.

Deserved!! Maybe he can finally recapture his amazing ... how many albums in the top 10 or 5 that were not recognized on the official charts because of being catalogue albums?

Sure absolutely. But two character driven potential oscar-bait biopics releasing on the same weekend? They would both appeal to a similar movie going audience and studios won't usually put them against each other as they overlap too much.
OK, this convo is a bit old by now but I've been intrigued by this argument (which, ngl, I couldn't understand, lol). I'm not really seeing the similarity between a wrestler/MMA guy who many people (outside of the US and the MMA / wrestling fanbase) have never heard of and Michael, a global superstar who most people have heard of plus they know many parts of his story / his music / what he looks like etc. And, sure, I know A24 have done well with their films in recent years so I suppose this biopic can't be discounted just yet but I had a look online (bc I have no idea who this guy is) and apparently the film has already had a couple of screenings which have had mixed reactions.

I'm just not seeing the overlap, is all I'm saying. But we'll see, I guess.

People forget something, this year is the anniversary of the Essential Michael Jackson album. Which is his biggest annual seller worldwide outside of Number Ones and Thriller. It will also be promoted and re-issued this year

They don't celebrate actual album anniversaries and you think they're gonna make a hooplah over a compilation disc? Somebody save me please

They would rather celebrate the 15th anniversary of "Michael".

Who are you talking about? :)

This film that got flagged up 👇
Well another biopic (Dwayne Johnson's movie) just got announced for Oct 3. It's another sign the Michael movie will be delayed.

The guy in the Dwayne Johnson film is Mark Kerr and he is (was?) a wrestler and / or an MMA peep. I don't know much more than that, I had to look him up online. I was confused by @Bogdan making a comparison between that biopic and Michael's biopic. I can't really see where the overlap is, tbh.

This Mark Kerr guy clearly has a fanbase. They did a documentary about him in 2002 which apparently his fans still talk about. I'm not saying he's a nobody. Just can't see why his film would be massive competition for a Michael Jackson biopic. Biopics are not really my thing, though, so who knows? 🤷🏽‍♀️

Movie box office performance is often quantified by referring to the "4 quadrants" - basically to which demographic does it most appeal to - male female young old etc. That's the reason you normally don't see 2 or 3 animated movies or action movies or any other similar genre opening against each other on the same weekend. Usually the studios would choose to offer "counter programming".

Fair point. (y)

Today's speculation about 'Michael'.

From The Times yesterday:
"In the pipeline are movies about The Beatles (four, actually), Michael Jackson (a two-parter), Bruce Springsteen ..."

"Filming the lives of Madonna and Michael Jackson are challenges as big as their stardom. There were reports this week that the Jackson film,
'Michael', directed by Antoine Fuqua (Training Day) and starring the singer's nephew, Jaafar, will be split into two parts, both to be released in autumn 2026."

I hope John Campea is wrong about an announcement coming in the next couple of months. Hoping for something sooner than that. Also: disclaimer. I don't think John Campea is 'breaking' anything here. It's old news already but I still enjoyed listening to a few minutes of speculation on this. Bc, god knows, there's nowt else, lol. :ROFLMAO:

In regards to the two movies, John Campea confirming that two sources close to production are saying it “will probably [happen]” and are “something they are seriously sitting down and looking at” is a good sign; to me, it means they are very confident in what they’ve made.
I don’t know where the allegation-plot change rumors fall in this, if at all. Having the allegations in a completely separate film (Part Two) would probably appease investors…

EDIT: Another interesting quote:
“I have heard [from my sources] that they are very, very proud of this film. I've heard they're very proud of the movie, that it's a great movie. What I was told was there are times when it's a hard watch, but they meant that in the really good way. I mean, just think of some other films, some of the greatest films ever had those moments that are really hard to watch. I've heard that, but also they're extremely proud of this film. And I just don't see this as being anything but a win for them if they [release two films].”
