it's even worse when you realize he and his friend got those songs not by buying or trading or even proving their trustworthiness, but by recording private collectors behind their back whenever they played stuff for them.

Like I've said before, if anybody had told late-era MJ that a producer would come in, take a bunch of his old demos and outtakes and turn them into a nice-selling album and a top 10 hit, without MJ himself having to lift a finger, record vocals or tour, he would have been over the moon.

Yeah, MJ, the artist who was seriously protective of his unfinished work to the point of stopping recording vocals so it didn't leak before it was ready, would love someone else to go through all his old unfinished stuff and release it without his participation.

I think MJ would definitely be the most pleased with Neff-U's remixes since not only he's a producer who Michael himself selected to specifically tinker with his old demos but his remixes have also remained faithful to his demos for the most part. "Best Of Joy" would probably be an exception to that though, I can imagine MJ sticking to the laid-back nature of the demo since the song retained that vibe for decades.

You realize most things leak because people record collectors right, and just because they buy shit and sell shit they don’t own doesn’t make them more of good people 💀

I would argue it makes them worse and the people who get to listen to them from these people, who share the songs or leak them are the ones who always get praised, so how about you pick a struggle MJ community, imagine defending collectors who buy tracks from hackers or people who betrayed Michael by selling the work they may have worked on, or stolen from him because they were entrusted by those who worked with MJ.

Bottom line: if anyone gets their hands on something they shouldn’t have, it will leak eventually.

It's just that sometimes when he does it here it feels a bit off, like before that post it was just random shitposting without really adding to the discussion, kinda came off more like mocking tbh.

Yeah I'm surprised at how much Neff-U actually changed Best Of Joy.

He did a good job with the remix for sure but I've always thought the transitions between sections sounded a bit sudden and jarring.

Fair point, Just trying to bring attention to the arrangements, I don’t like leaks, but these songs will leak eventually, just not by me

Just getting ahead with the memes, they’ll be a lot funnier when the songs do leak
 
Neff-U elevated “Best of Joy” for me. He definitely took some creative liberties, but I think his interpretation has more emotion and feels more well thought-out than the demo. He and McClain seem to have the best mindset as far as “reworking” songs go.

I’ve read elsewhere that Brent Averill was Michael’s Hayvenhurst engineer from 1979 until 1984…
Not to mention Bill Bottrell from October 1985 to 1991
 
The Xscape Album should just have the remixes as second disc and not first..
Also it’s disrespectful that they remixed the song „escape“ because that one was actually finished.
 
I’m not having y’all diss the reworked Xscape version of Loving You , which I thought was brilliant and really better than the bland and dated demo.

The only song that they really butchered on Xscape was the title track and that was by Jerkins himself , not sure how he thought his new version was better - was so boring!

I love the remix, but I also adore the demo.

Setting aside the moral / respect element and focusing solely on quality, most of the remixes on XSCAPE are leaps and bounds ahead of the originals. The one that isn’t, for me, is “Blue Gangsta.”

I don't get this take, I never will.
I always thought the remixes were just weak and quick beats slapped together so they could throw MJ's lead on top and call it a day.

It's also why I dislike 90% of all the house, club, dance etc MJ remixes from his 90s singles, there's literally zero hint of the original song present in those.

To each his own I guess, but I never thought the majority would agree with ya lol

Well, it’s personal preference. I’m not defending them as authentic MJ songs, I just think the production and approach is stronger. Nothing wrong with disliking them!

Regarding this, I know the official line about MJ not recording vocals until late in the process is because he was afraid it would leak. But of course, the same risks of songs leaking applied to all other artists in the post-Napster era. So why it would be different for him is unclear. My own opinion is that, post 2000, getting him in the studio to record vocals was difficult, for reasons that have been made all too clear since that day in June 2009. Same thing happened with Elvis, by the way, to the point where the record company brought a mobile studio to Graceland in the hope they could corner him into actually laying down some vocals.
 
How the hell did songs like Xscape even leak when Michael was alive?

Also what was the first song to ever leak and when did it?
