Elvis' early music was popular on the "race" charts.
The Beasties were played on black radio in the southern USA. Even today, the hip hop station still play License To Ill tracks during their "Classic Old School" program. In the 1980s, black stations where I lived even occasionally played acts like Sheena Easton, Tears For Fears, Madonna, Phil Collins, Depeche Mode, Level 42, Duran Duran, Howard Jones, Falco, and the Pet Shop Boys. They also played stuff like Lady by Kenny Rogers, Sailing & Ride Like The Wind by Christopher Cross, and Steal Away by Robbie Dupree. I also remember Steely Dan & The Eagles being played, especially Hey Nineteen & I Can't Tell You Why. Miss You and Harlem Shuffle by the Rolling Stones were also heavily played.I have never ever in my whole life heard the beastie boys on a black radio station.
