Seemingly MJ's birthday is going to be celebrated in Gary again this year
http://www.theofficialmjjtribute.com/index.html

I was looking at that web site and wonder if they have license to use those photos of MJ from Ebony?

That website lists only Katherine from the family to participate to this. Thank god,, PPB doesn't have to be there plugging shady products for shady family members.

GARY | Gary’s most celebrated native and his brothers are being honored in a rare photo exhibit that debuted Wednesday at South Shore Event Center at Majestic Star Casino in Gary.

The exhibit “Never Can Say Goodbye — Celebrating the King of Pop and J5,” presented by the Chicago Blues Museum and Majestic Star Casino and Hotel, opened with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and was attended by Katherine Jackson, Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson and more than 300 invited guests.

The display will be featured through Sept. 5.

“I’m delighted that we have partnered with the Chicago Blues Museum to bring this exhibit here,” said Chareice White, corporate director of community relations for Majestic Star Casino.

White said it’s especially fitting to open the exhibit at this time since Michael Jackson’s birthday is today. Jackson, who died June 25, 2009, would have turned 55.

“The exhibit gives a glimpse into the lives of Gary’s famous sons,” White said. Photos in the display, culled from the collection of Chicago Blues Museum founder Gregg Parker, depict various stages in the careers of Michael Jackson and his brothers. Pictures from performances in Gary by The Jackson 5 to shots of the King of Pop’s solo career are highlighted.

At Wednesday’s event, Craig Ghelfi, general manager of Majestic Star Casino, said it was an honor to have the notable exhibit on the casino grounds.

“It’s great and always exciting to do something for Michael Jackson and his family. They are Gary,” Ghelfi said. “We’re proud to have Gregg Parker and his group (Chicago Blues Museum) here.”

Freeman-Wilson welcomed the crowd to the event and said she was particularly happy that Katherine Jackson was a special guest.

“It’s no surprise to me that Michael and his brothers have made such great accomplishments around the world seeing the type of person their mother is,” Freeman-Wilson said.

Katherine Jackson, who was presented with flowers, thanked casino personnel, the mayor, blues museum organizers and guests.

“So graciously for the last three years you all have done this (honored Michael). I thank you so much,” Jackson said.

The exhibit was scheduled to open to the public at 10 p.m. Wednesday and remain open through Sept. 5.

I'm very glad they're still doing this on his birthday. Did any family go to Forest Lawn today? I didn't see anything about it.

I'm glad that kids weren't made to promote anything (I hope?) and it was kind of low key event in sense that paps weren't on kids faces.
Last year when Latoya was filming her show, obviously she called at media to follow them:angry:

Michael Jackson fans descend on Gary for tribute

Published: August 30, 2013 Updated 39 minutes ago

The Associated Press

GARY, Ind. — Michael Jackson's mother watched from her family's humble former home in Gary as fans and performers paid homage to her son on what would have been the late pop star's 55th birthday.

Katherine Jackson was one of the Jacksons who gathered at the house Thursday as fans began a celebration of the singer in the northwest Indiana city where the Jacksons lived before they became Motown record stars when Michael Jackson was a child.

Among Thursday's parade of well-wishers was Mary Singer of St. Petersburg, Fla. She told The Post-Tribune (http://bit.ly/1dt2sY4 ) she became a fan of the performer of such hits as "Thriller" and "Billie Jean" when she lived a few blocks from the Motown recording studio in Detroit.

"I remember seeing the whole family go into Motown Records one day," she said. "I've loved them ever since."

Carmen Rodriguez of Schertz, Texas, took a plane to Detroit and drove to Gary to attend the weekend-long celebration of her favorite singer.

"I still cry when I hear his music," Rodriguez said.

Eleven-year-old Angel Diaz of El Paso, Texas, has performed as a Jackson impersonator for years. He said he began to watch Jackson's music videos and mimic his moves when his mother told him of Jackson's death.

"My grandpa showed me "Thriller," and I was watching and started to dance. I practiced every day," Diaz said.

Jackson died June 25, 2009.

Maybe it's just me but I don't understand this thing in front of Michael's old house. Judging by the pictures it seems the only thing going on there is PPB and some other people (who are they anyway?) are signing autographs.

I love when Blanket stands like Michael with his hands clasped in front of him. There are lots of shots of Michael standing like that.

It's the Jackson's way of milking his birthday as long as possible

Block Party Celebrates The Life And Music Of Michael Jackson
Published: August 30, 2013

GARY — Fans and performers from across the country gathered at 2300 Jackson St. to celebrate the life and career of Michael Jackson on what would have been his 55th birthday.

Four years after his death, the King of Pop still reigns in his hometown. Members of the Jackson family, including Katherine Jackson, watched the celebration from the single-floor house the family once called home.

Performances began Thursday afternoon, and will continue through the weekend.

Well-wishers like Mary Singer of St. Petersburg, Fla., traveled long distances to remember the most influential performer in pop music. Singer loved everything about the performer, and said she was a fan when she lived a few blocks away from the Motown recording studio in Detroit. “I remember seeing the whole family go into Motown Records one day,” she said. “I’ve loved them ever since.”

Carmen Rodriguez of Schertz, Texas, flew in to Detroit and drove to Gary to celebrate her favorite singer.
“I still cry when I hear his music,” Rodriguez said.

As an artist, Kerry James Jr. of Gary said Jackson’s work influences his performance as a musician, both in dancing and singing. He stood in the crowd clutching his guitar in a soft case.

“He was a fantastic performer,” James said. “He’s an inspiration for a lot of the songs that I wrote and how I sing.”
Carlo Riley of Denver dressed as the pop performer, and often posed with fellow fans for pictures. “He’s just a magical person,” Riley said. “That’s why he has fans across the world. There’s a third dimension to his music that everyone just identifies with.”

Dancing as the embodiment of Michael Jackson, Angel Diaz, 11, of El Pazo, Texas, has performed as an impersonator for years. He recalls when his mother told him of Jackson’s death, and began to watch his music videos, mimicking his moves. “My grandpa showed me “Thriller,” and I was watching and started to dance. I practiced every day,” Diaz said.

James Malinchak and Tony Branch, who were featured in the ABC television show “Secret Millionaire,” talked about Jackson’s contributions to the world. Malinchak spoke about Jackson’s career as a musician, including the records set in sales. Some of his songs, such as “We Are the World” and “Heal the World,” provided millions of dollars to charity, they said, and Jackson created several charity organizations and often donated ticket sales from performances. Speaking to the crowd, Branch drew comparisons between Michael Jackson’s work of breaking down racial barriers, and the anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.’s speech during the March on Washington in 1963.

“Martin and Michael cared more about other people than they did themselves,” Branch said. “They did so much for the race. And I’m not talking about the black race, or the white race, but the human race.”

Exactly! This is probably odd to most, but his birthdate is a tougher day (for me) than the day he died. Every August 29th is a reminder of the years that were STOLEN from him. He should have been here to celebrate his 55 years.

I can understand why some can't appreciate it, but it's nice the City Of Gary Indiana continues to remember Michael on his Birthday. It's a positive thing for the city, for Michael and his children seem to enjoy him being honored in this way. There is no reason IMO why they should not be there to support and celebrate their dad.

If his kids like going to see where their dad was from I think that's great. Maybe they like the people and the community. I am sure it's a lot different than California.

I thought this was a nice tribute -

Mani Niall was Jackson’s personal chef during his ‘Thriller” days, accompanying the entertainer as he traveled throughout the world. The cookbook author and now owner of Oakland, Calif.’s Sweet Bar Bakery plans to cook up all of the performer’s fave dishes to share with his patrons on August 29th. Jackson used to indulge in Niall’s smoky New Mexican red chile enchilada sauce over chilaquiles with black beans, jicama slaw, and pork or vegetarian adobo (Jackson would have eaten the veggie dish). For dessert, Niall is dishing up ice cream and maple pecan cookies, which Jackson could reportedly not get enough of! Niall never made a celebratory cake for Jackson because the pop star was a Jehovah’s Witness so those kinds of festivities are not celebrated. For the culinary birthday bash, It is also rumored that the famed chef might even have a few “Thriller” video ghouls on hand. http://newsone.com/2702839/michael-jackson-birthday-party-2013/

:agree:

But there is something disturbing: they distribute autographs. :bugeyed This is so WTF for me. They are not celebrities. They are just teenagers. Many fans should have awareness of it and let them. They are just the children of Michael. If they were adults, would be absolutely OK... Or not? :fear:

I think if Katherine had put her foot down with her husband, back in the 1960's, about whipping Michael Jackson into shape and not allowing her children to perform in Strip Club's, there may not have been a Jackson 5. It's almost like she was being whipped into shape, too, as a wife. I just don't think Katherine enjoyed being poor. She likes to think she has been the glue to keep the family together and that if it wasn't for Joe Jackson whipping Michael Jackson into shape and performing, a kid between the ages of 5 - 10 year's old, in a strip club, and they had stayed in Gary, Indiana, these said children may have ended up in jail doing time for whatever crime. If she hated the place so much, why even have a tribute there?

Sometimes it's hard to justify the excuses to why Katherine does do a tribute, on Michael's birthday, back in Gary, Indiana. Gary was so bad that Show Business saved the family from the evil street's. The Show Business mentality has proven to be a detriment to Paris Jackson, which is why she isn't there. Competing with another female, like Katherine Jackson, is not advantageous to Michael Jackson's daughter. It is a threat. Which is why I believe Paris was cutting herself, because of how hostile Katherine's children have been to Paris, in light of the kidnapping incident. This incident alone did not make Janet Jackson look very humane. This would infuriate Katherine Jackson that her baby girl, Janet Jackson, was cast in a bad light, when her career was finally giving Janet Jackson a second chance in the world of Show Business, because of Michael Jackson's death.

Yes, I agree with my own misgivings of why Katherine Jackson would celebrate Michael's birthday in Gary, Indiana, when if Joe Jackson had not whipped Michael Jackson into shape and had not had Michael Jackson perform in Strip Club's between the age's of 5 - 10 year's, the Jackson family would have lived happily ever after in Gary, Indiana. Right?!

@Mneme...classic illustration. Thank you for bringing that to my attention, of the big top, that Michael always whimsically portrays his entertainment in the form of - The Greatest Show On Earth! -with those in the background watching with a sharp eye that this continues in such a venue.
