I don't think renaming it was necessary, but I don't believe Michael was unaware Elvis's song existed.

Personally, I think they should have put their foot down about changing the name of the song. There are tons of songs with the exact same name, and "This Place Hotel" looks and sounds absurd.

I've only gotten used to seeing it as This Place Hotel thanks to sites like Last FM...but I've pondered changing the title many times as Heartbreak Hotel is better.

I love that song to pieces, honestly. The melody, the harmonies, the arrangement, and Michael´s outstanding vocals.
