"Michael", a biopic about Michael Jackson, is officially happening.

The MJCast section of the episode covering the biopic news is worth a listen, however disappointing it is. Biopic section starts at 36:09. Heartbreaking even, hearing how much this film, as currently written, would be tackling in covering the allegations. One notable section:

“…The narrative of the biopic revolved very heavily around the allegations.

It depicted the raid on Neverland. It depicted the forced naked photoshoot Michael Jackson was subjected to by the government. And it really used the allegations in 1993 as a narrative spine.

So it was kind of flashing backwards and forwards between what's going on in 1993 and how did we get here. It was a very crucial part of the film and that was driven in no small part by Graham King, the producer, who is a huge supporter of Michael and has researched the topic in a massive amount of detail and is very convinced, as I understand it, of Michael's innocence and wanted to make that very central to the film. However, when this story broke, Lionsgate were like, what the f*** is this?

…So there have now been reshoots ordered. I understand that the reshoots are... I have to think carefully about what I say.

I understand that the reshoots are to do with a rewriting of the narrative of the film, which will now substantially dodge the 1993 issue, whereas it was previously heavily built around the 1993 issue. Those reshoots are due to take place in the coming months, but obviously, it's a big cast with some big hitters in it, like Coleman Domingo and Miles Teller. So when they will be able to get everybody together to do the reshoots, I don’t know.”

You’re seriously telling me the whole script was written, then filmed, editing began, promos posted… then lionsgate finally wanted to see what was going on in the film & ordered it all be changed?

I mean I do think there were rewrites and changes but not to the extent that the whole ****** movie is being rewritten and that they are so scared to show the allegations, they probably toned down the focus on the 93 case and made it more evenly spread for better pacing in the film, but even then we don't know what is going on behind the scenes, fans for some reason took the MJCast episode as 100% proof that the biopic is in huge trouble when it's not. It's just some rewrites its really not the end of the biopic, despite Lionsgate being cowards about the Cascios they aren't going to force production to rewrite the whole film and do everything again.

What’s with this pro-everything narrative in regards to the biopic? It reeks of the “Michael” album discussion back in the day, and we see where that got us. Skepticism is a healthy thing, especially with Michael products.

Negative doesn’t mean I’m not realistic; I just trust their source. It is what it is. I was beyond ecstatic for the biopic, now cautiously optimistic, at least in their coverage of the allegations.

I think the narrative is that the studio panicked when they heard about the cascio extortion, so are now making them re write the movie to remove or tone down any allegations stuff, not that Lionsgate didn't know what was in the film.

No we must all be pro everything or you are a fake fan!!!!

(joking ofc)

I was mainly just saying that MJCasts information doesn't mean that the biopic is officially doomed, but I agree that we should just wait to see what Lionsgate is cooking before we all make our judgements now

Regardless of all the controversy/secrecy around these delays and reshoots, is anyone else getting flashbacks to that horrible Man In The Mirror TV movie?

That "movie" depicted Michael during the police strip search if I remember correctly. If the MJCast is correct, I think that is horrendously distasteful to depict Michael at his lowest for the sake of a "story" . Just my thoughts

Two weeks until Cinemacon. If there is no update/teaser/trailer there will be no biopic this year IMO. Six months out from the supposed release date, there HAS to be something come out then (if it is indeed still being released in Oct).

Let's all have our fingers crossed for good news 🤞

i dont think the strip search being shown in a biopic like this is 'distasteful' as its just a true uncomfortable moment that michael unfortunately had to endure, this movie is being done by professionals and there is alot of care for it, michael had many low points and it will be showed in the movie since he was a human, he didnt always have high points in his life. if they include it i think ita essential to show how fucked up the search was and to create sympathy for michael

They had a teaser last year and the movie was postponed anyway

I think it's distasteful taking the lowest point in Michael's life and using that as the anchor for sympathy in a dramatisation of his life.
That's my feelings on it

i dont really think its the central point of the movie, if so that would be distasteful, but they will show it because it is the truth and it is something that happened

I'm sorry, but why would they rewrite and reshoot the core of the movie because of the Cascios thing? What difference would it make for the Cascios? And wasn't it because there was an old deal the Estate "forgot" about it involving the Chandlers? haha

The old deal sounds weird but reshooting because of the Cascios, that's just insane. Maybe they did rewrite the movie in a way, but I don't think that's the reason for it at all.

i think the reshoots werent due to the cascios being in the movie, but moreso lionsgate thinking that the estate could be hiding more allegations/ or some huge bombshell could hinder the biopics performance

But do you think that "removing" the allegations from the movie would make accusers more ok with it? The accusers want money. if they are going to go after that, they will do it wether it has the allegations in it or not.

The first rumor about an old deal with the Chandlers makes much more sense then this, wven though I don't really buy it either.

That's why I was telling y'all to wait and not to think too hard and to not go into doom and gloom regarding the movie.

Credible sources who have access to people involved in the movie or to MJ's world or family, first said the movie was gonna end in 1988, then it was gonna end right before the allegations, then it was gonna cover all his life, then it wasn't gonna focus on the allegations, then the allegations were the main pillar of the plot.

Maybe something happened that required the delay but the reason why must have been twisted to the nth degree by now. Everyone is coming out with a different reason why and probably it's none of them.

A very plausable reason for the delay from April to October could be about entering festivals and having a better chance for the 2026 Oscars. I think we will have a much better idea about all of this in April.

Fair point but this argument always makes me think: so why not just go for an autumn release to begin with?

There seem to be two thoughts on this:
1 - release your film in March / April, there won't be loads of other new films out at that time = less competition = you'll have a better chance at cleaning up at the box office
2 - release the thing in the autumn and you'll have a better chance with festival screenings / award nominations, especially the Oscars

If you wanted to go for No.2 why not just focus on that straightaway? Just seems a bit odd to me. 🤷🏽‍♀️

Maybe the execs or producers more and more believed the movie had an Oscar chance as production went along and the dailies were looking good.

There was some article tidbit that a Lionsgate exec was buying shares because he felt really excited about the Michael movie.
