Michael Jackson's Official Sales: A Detailed Look!

^It's common knowledge that the Jackson 5/Jacksons have sold over 100 million units. I don't see the big issue here. The sales for all albums/singles/downloads span from the release all the way up to July 31st 2010. The Jackson 5 material initially sold most of it's units in the US but throughout the decades it has charted well overseas adding to the sales. I don't really see any big shock at all.

I think it's the reaction from the shock of seeing the actual numbers, especially the Motown ones. Add that to whatever bias the person has then I can see why they would be shocked and/or screaming out bloody murder. I mean, it's been widely stated that the Jacksons's sales were about 100 million, but nothing was ever really confirmed or investigated due to the lack of info out there...as far as I know.

kinda off topic but i think the jackson's going places album is so underated

I find the Jacksons, in general, highly underrated. That period in time is often forgotten about in the midst of the Jackson 5 era, and then Michael's own era.

I think the reason behind that is lot of us are wasn't from that generation.,the people from that era don't blog or share those info with us. Obviously J5 are so huge those days.,to have their own TV show and have Mohammed Ali on it says lot about their popularity...
I found this on youtube and check how cool is this;

And who else can throw punches to the great Ali like this!!!

Hit record!!!

We are just like oxygen we are allover the world!!!

This must have been one hell of a show!

wow the amount of records (albums + singles added together) that each mj solo studio album sold is amazing,

Thriller= 111,300,000 records

Bad= 68,900,000 records

Dangerous= 65,500,000 records

History= 46,900,000 records

Blood On The Dancefloor= 9,300,000 records

Is this real by FORBES? (I personally dont trust Forbes, they have been reporting so many ridiculous articles full of inconsistencies... that...)

Smooth, do you know why Sony and Motown don't update the certifications around the world?

I think someone said it was because it would cost them a lot of money. - Don't know if that's really the reason but that's what someone said.

If they don't update always, the certifications accumulate and so begin very expensive. In Australia and New Zealand there isn't this problem because they updates always.

US certifications are still way behind for MJ. Even with the recent updates last year, there are more to go.

For the prestigious status of Michael Jackson - ICON and the biggest selling artist and for Sony, they should UPDATE every record sales... because of the reason of the prestige for Sony and Michael, and Michael is not here to spend their money as a sponsorship for his projects so....

Doest matter that they are to pay the royalties and dues to RIAA or whatever...
I think that its either the professional failure or the conscious "conspiracy" of rec. companies not to update the "numbers" and let Michael be the best seller as I repeatedly claim about the MJ vs. Elvis and the Beatles agenda of their rec. companies.

That is the fact! They know it but its against their interests...

True. There are many countries where Michael is under certified. Some examples are Canada, United Kingdom, Brazil, Argentina and Finland. Only Australia and New Zealand are always updated for all artists.

Imagine Sony releasing a mega campaign for Michael's back catalogue with the headlines: Certified BEST SELLING ARTIST OF ALL TIME... :woohoo:!

Smooth didn't you said a while mj approxmitly sold over 80 million in the U.S. b/c i think he was at 69.5 million before he passed

Its so funny how much they call Invincible a flop when it was one of the biggest selling albums in the past decade...pretty damn good considering the lack of marketing and promotion for the album...not to mention there was no tour

RIAA updated MJ's sales which were 59 million before his death to the current 69.5 million. These numbers however are still very low. MJ has indeed sold 80 million albums in the US as of August 2010 according to Sony.

But Sony doesnt want to update all the sales or what?

Thats the point, there are so.called updates by RIAA, but there are also updated by Sony itself... so what can be taken seriously...? Of course, media takes RIAA...

i would be nice if MR HOLf ( new chairman of Sony) release the offical and updated certifications of his albums by next year

billboard release stated Mj is the biggest selling R&B artist of the century In the U.S.

he Beatles are the best-selling act of the 20th century, according to the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). The organization's "Artists Of The Century" list, which it released today, credits the Fab Four for selling than 106 million albums in the U.S.

With 89 million albums sold, Garth Brooks is the top male artist on the list; Barbra Streisand, who has moved nearly 62 million albums, is the top female.

The Eagles' "Their Greatest Hits 1971-1975" (Elektra) is the century's top album, certified for sales of 26 million units. The set squeaked by Michael Jackson's "Thriller" (Epic), which held the album sales title from 1984 to January of this year.

Elton John's "Candle In The Wind 1997" (Rocket/A&M) is this century's best-selling single, having moved 11 million copies in the U.S. And Elvis Presley is this century's performer with the most certified gold and platinum albums and singles. (A gold certification denotes 500,000 units shipped, while a platinum certification denotes 1 million shipped.)

Other century honorees include Brooks (top-selling country artist), Reba McEntire (top female country artist), and Alabama (top country group); Jackson (top-selling R&B artist), Whitney Houston (top R&B female artist), and Boyz II Men (top R&B group); and Presley (top-selling rock artist), Madonna (top female rock artist), and the Beatles (top rock act).

In addition, TLC's "CrazySexyCool" (LaFace/Arista) is the leading hip-hop album, Bob Marley & the Wailers' "Legend" (Tuff Gong/IDJMG) is the top reggae set, and the Three Tenors' "In Concert" (London) is the best-selling classical album.

Didnt think The Jacksons self titled album would have outsold Destiny and Triumph...interesting. And even though Goin Places didnt have a major hit, it only sold 800,000?? Surprising when all the other studio albums passed 2 mill

^ exactly, and Michael will never be awarded officially the way he deserves..., at least for the selling records, doesnt matter if anybody thinks that MJ is just a pop music.

Guys.,in case if you haven't heard about this here's a great news;

"Planet Michael" A virtual world:

"Planet Michael, an online virtual world devoted to Jackson's life, music and concerns, being developed to open late next year, will combine features of a massively multiplayer online game and social network.

"We put a focus on something that will truly allow fans to immerse themselves in a Michael Jackson-like universe or music-video-like world and interact with each other and then go on adventures and do gameplay stuff and socialize," says Josh Gordon of developer SEE Virtual Worlds."

"A free-to-download game, Planet Michael will let players (ages 13-up) customize their own avatars, perhaps with red Thriller jackets and sequined gloves. However, you will be able to spend money on items, and some virtual objects earned and created in the world can be traded or sold to others. (More information at planetmichael.com.)"

""There is no doubt we will be open to people joking about it and criticizing it," says Gordon. "We'll just have to roll with that as it comes, so to speak. ... He's such a big name and he's such a big legend that no matter what we do, we are going to get a lot of people who are excited, and we are going to get people who criticize us. And we have just taken that as the way it is going to be."
