All I can see/hear in my head is Michael standing there, with a totally innocent, clueless and confused look on his face, saying, "I'm expressing myself" :lmao:

Michael: I started doing that with ‘Bad’. Martin Scorsese directed that short film in the subways of New York. I let the music tell me what to do. I remember him saying, “That was a great take! I want you to see it.” So we pushed playback, and I went “Aaaah!” I didn’t realize I was doing that. But then everyone else started doing that, and Madonna, too. But it’s not sexual at all.

Maybe to start with he didn't realise he was doing that but once he was made aware it would be hard to ignore how people interpret that. Michael Bush said he knew what he was doing by wearing those gold pants, he must also have known that touching himself (especially while wearing those pants!) was going to be a major turn on for people. Maybe he just didn't want to publicly admit that.

That's my theory. And on top of it all, having been raised in show business- he said it in Moonwalker I think- he always knew what to say. the right things to say, to get the best reaction possible out of the public. Even if you have to lie, I remember he told a story about how he was on Johnny Carson- or some show like that- and his management telling him he had to say "this" or "that" so that people would look to him and his brothers and go "Aww, they're so wonderful!". The more endearing Michael and his whole family were to the public, the higher it would make album sales go. So it became necessary for him to tell these "little white lies" in order to make money and keep his job, really.

Now, I do not think Michael is a liar. In fact, I feel he was a very honest person. But from his own words, he knew how to react, how to behave, and when to say the right things. And it is entirely possible this was one of those times. Like you said, once he had been made aware of the public's reaction to it, there's no way he could have ignored that. He might not have cared what everyone thought, lol, and that's fine, but he couldn't deny how it was being interpreted. And I have no doubts he even used that move to his advantage at some points. Perhaps not all the time, but maybe a few times.

That is just my opinion though. I could be entirely wrong.
 
And btw, about the crotch grab :D I'd never call Michael a liar, but...

He's always been purposely sexy, he was just very low key about it. He'd never come out and say it -for all kinds of reasons- but he sure was. And he was well aware of it too, lol. I just think he didn't want people to think that's what he was about. It would become a distraction of what he was truly trying to convey, and so he didn't really address it or when confronted, tried to talk his way out of it:laugh: But I'm sorry baby, I see right through you :D
