Michael's work with Quincy Jones

Re: Spike Lee announces Off The Wall Documentary - Estate Announcement Page 66

I've seen people claim he's 'co-producer' simply because it's his album. I honestly can't help but shake my head at BS like those statements.

Michael received co-producer credits on all the songs he wrote or co-wrote. Only song MJ received a co-producer credits that he didn't write or co-write is Man In The Mirror. The reason for that is that Michael produced by himself all the demos that he would bring to Quincy.

fans, the public, and music critics saw them as equal contributors to Thriller

I often see that and I think that that's not true though. Ok maybe on Off The Wall they were equal contributors. Maybe even on Thriller. Definitely not on Bad. And equal in what? Don't forget that Quincy did not write any of these songs (except co-wrote P.Y.T) like Teddy or Rodney or Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis did later! All he did is (and he did that beautifully) chosen the right tracks for the final tracklist and chosen the best songwriters and musicians. Don't forget all these musicians, songwriters like Rod Temperton, engineers like Bruce Swedien! And of course Quincy produced that material masterfully. MJ (except for singing) wrote 2 songs on Off The Wall and co-wrote 1, he wrote 4 on Thriller and 9 on Bad + he co-produced all the songs he had written or co-written + Man In The Mirror. So I would say that they were not equal. Michael was most important, then Quincy and all the musicians, songwriters and engineers. Because like Quincy once said "you can't polish a doo-doo". Well, I can equally say "you can't doo-doo a masterpiece". So when MJ brings you DSTYGE, Billie Jean, TWYMMF or Rod brings you Thriller or Lady In My Life or you get Human Nature... no matter how bad producer are you you can't turn those songs into a doo-doo!

Wait, it takes someone's death to want to embrace their full body of work
So what if he was still present.....then what

Yes. Not for me, but for regular people, yes. If he was still present he would be making new music and he would tour the world with This Is It.

But he did re-release all of his albums (except HIStory) in 2001 and all the albums except for Dangerous (I think; because it had no new material) re-entered the charts. Also Thriller 25 sold 3,5 million copies in 2008 and that's not a small number for a re-release in 2008.

Re: MJ & Quincy. A lot of people still think Mike had child porn at Neverland and should've been convicted. No amount of evidence available can change their mind for some bizarre reason. I don't think a documentary would do an awful lot on people's incredibly weird obsession with giving Quincy Jones full credit for anything "good" MJ did.

I am sorry but you are starting to be a bit like a broken record with these posts. You keep repeating these same posts in each conversation that you participate in, no matter what the actual topic is. We get it, you appreciate the Quincy Jones albums more than anything else in MJ's career, you are a huge fan of Quincy Jones and you think MJ should have stayed with him and should not have planted stories about himself and then everything would be rosy and he would have continued to sell albums in Thriller range amount. I don't agree, IMO you have a very simplicistic view of these issues, but I think everyone gets your point already, can we move on from this? Or if you want to keep discussing this then please create a seperate thread for it

I never said MJ should have stayed with Quincy just for the sake of it

I was never upset that he started working with other producers because he and Quincy already proved their point and there was nothing else to prove

And I always said that Michael made accomplished music after their collaboration together, it would be unfair and inaccurate to say that he did not

Thr issue is that history is being rewritten suggesting Quincy's contribution in his career was minute when thats the furthest thing from the truth, if that attempt to misrepresent what actually happened, there wouldn't be a need to constantly point that out

Bad sold 16 million copies 2 months after its release, well on pace to outsell Thriller, and thats when everything changed

I did not see Quincy in the greatest music video of all time - Thriller.

You spelled Smooth Criminal wrong

Next time Quincy Jones will claim that he composed Billie Jean and Beat it.
I can't understand the hate about the man that helped Mike and made Thriller what it is. Quincy never claimed that. Michael wrote the melody and the lycris to those and the music is performed and done by the studio musicians. Everyone is fairly credited ....

Quincy has said some eye brow raising things about Michael these last few years, but I'll give credit where credit's due, and say that he was an amazing producer, and I appreciate his contributions to Off The Wall, Thriller and BAD.
This!!!There wouldn't exist any of these albums without Quincy! At least Off the wall and Thriller would have never happened if it wasnt for Quincy and his musicians and songwriters. This man made history with and for Michael. He deserves more respect,at least as a producer, from the fans! There wouldnt be any Thriller without Quincy Jones ,and we all damn know it. Michael would have maybe written some of the songs hes done for these albums maybe for some The Jacksons albums....but there wouldnt be his biggest selling album without Jones. Thank you for your post!

He also said MJ had no idea what they were making doing Thriller.

You know MJ was clueless, it was Quincy's vision and insight behind everything
Quincy is a horrible person I see...briliant producer....but Michael for sure wasnt any kind of clueless 0_0

there is no debate on that......here is a list of Quincy Jones accomplishments years before he even met Michael Jackson

1.) Quincy had already learned how to play the trumpet at the age of 11

2.) had written his first musical composition at the age of 14

3.) as a teenager, joined Lionel Hampton's r&b/blues band as a trumpeteer

4.) at 23, he became musical director of Count Basie's world travelling band

5.) received first award of merit as an arranger in 1956

6.) studied composition and theory of Nadia Boulanger in france, one of 20th centuries greatest music tutors

7.) First musical score he mastered was Igor Stravinsky's "Firebird Suite", the same Stravinsky MIchael Jackson talked about allot and I'm sure he learned about from Quincy Jones

8.) in the early 1960s, Quincy became the first black vice president of a major music label at Mercury Records

9.) Scored for both Frank Sinatra and Count Basie's Ochestra

10.) won his first Grammy award in the 60s for arranging one of Count Basie's compositions with BAsie being remembered as one of the best jazz artists of all time

11.) entering the 1970s, Quincy was the most sought after musical producer/arranger in the recording industry

12.) completed musical scores for countless movies and tv shows.....the music you hear in those Austin Powers movies "Soul Bosa Nova".....Quincy Jones scored that

13.) First black person to serve as musical arranger for the Grammy Awards in 1973

14.) Co-produced a musical special for one of the music's great luminaries in Duke Ellington in the early 70s

15.) Musical scored for the mini series "Roots" in 1977

16.) would use his music to champion social activism throughout the globe

allll that happened before he started working with Michael Jackson and I left allot of stuff out

and after they stopped working, Quincy's career did not end their

even in the 80s, he produced two grammy award winning albums with "The Dude" in 1981 and "Back on the Block" in 1989 for which he won a total of 8 Grammys for, and scored for the movie "The Color Purple" and for the tv series "In The Heat of the Night"

in the 90s, he co-produced several hit tv shows including "The fresh prince of bel-air"

was the musical arranger for President Clinton's presidential inauguration

Founded "Vibe" magazine in the mid 90s

began addressing world debt relief for several struggling nations who owed high interest money to the international monetary relief fund

throughout his storied career, he scored 33 major films and dozens of tv shows, arranged over 500 recordings, nominated for over 75 grammys, winning 27 total, several oscar nominations, won an emmy award, received the highest jazz honor from the national endowment of the arts

his career has spanned over 6 decades and he knows about the changing scope of music and the origin of musical expressions better than anyone I've ever seen......

his resume clearly indicates he has earned the right to be recognized as the greatest musical producer of all time and he would have earned that distinction if he and Michael Jackson never worked together....yes, their collaboration together was Quincy's most celebrated moments, but he was already the best during the time black music and its representatives were being shunned by the restrictions placed w/in the entertainment and music field.....

he never needed to or tried to take credit for the success he and MJ shared together....that's a myth that's been put out their over recent times

and the reason is Quincy is speaking out more about his contribution to Off The Wall, Thriller, and Bad is because for the past 5 years, the insinuation has been presented publically that he did not really contribute....

this was not an issue when their collaboration was actually taking place, there was never any debates about who was doing what......that's what's so unfortunate about where things stand now and how history is being changed to fit narratives.....
THIS!!

Quincy shouldn’t feel too bad, he is universally regarded as the man behind “thriller”. Just about every music snob or critic pretty much puts down Michael’s contribution. They will gladly point out that after Quincy stopped working with Michael the critically acclaimed work also stopped. This is only partly true of course.
I think Michael’s mastery regarding music lies in his vocal arrengements and feel for melody.
What does irritate me slightly in music critic circles is that ”song and dance” artists usually don’t get seen as musical geniuses. If you want good reviews you have to write an compose all the songs yourself and preferably be an expert instrumentalist. The singing and arrangements etc are almost of no value apparently.
