Do you think Sony stopped the promotion for invincible because MJ wanted to spend way to much on videos? I know MJ wanted to open the album with a blockbuster short film for Unbreakable that would have cost up to 20 million to make.

If this is true, then that is way to expensive for a video and the label actually make a good profit on your album. That's unless he is still selling on his 1980's level.

Do you think MJ needs to accept that right now Sony might not give him the budget to make those expensive videos until he proves he can still sale at a high enough level where they will make a good profit. I think 2 million per video max is enough to make a quality enough video. You shouldn't need 20 million just to make a video.

Michael wanted to make a 20 minute film for Unbreakable, could that 20 number coming from that??

OK, just to give you an idea on costs.. When it comes to special effect type films. Matrix, Transformers etc... It is very commen to spend 1 million dollars per minute on the film. So if Michael was planning to make a HUGE special effect driven film, like scream level special effects for today's generation. 20 million is likely..

BUT, if he was planning to make a video based on the story, dance, and no special effects.. 20 million is not realistic..

I don't know what Michaels video would have looked like, so....

But what if the artist is not selling on the level like he once did. This is probably how Sony looked at the situation because they need to make a profit on the album.

A big budget video is fine, but maybe with the 2nd or 3rd single after the album has proven it can sale at a high level.

Michael paid for Thriller by himself, It didn't cost Sony a penny.^_^
First you said that you know Mj was going to do ... and then you said 'If this is true... That is confusing.^_^

Is there still any word on for which record company Michael is signing up for this next new album? Because I think that Michael should leave Sony for good when it comes to his albums. (Can Mike do that?) Unless Sony is going to promote MJ like it does its other big artists. I never really believed that it was just because of Mottola. Sony just hasn't been very creative with Michael's work.

Sony could not have thought that because his last major project HIStory sold very well.. It was a dual disc, twince the price as a regular CD yet it still sold very well considering.. Infact HIStory became the fastest selling album it's opening week, and stayed that way for a good amount of time.. It was recently beat.

Unless MJ is willing to pay for the video himself,i dont see Sony investing that much in a video until he proves he can still sale at a high level. He could release a simple video 1st with a great lead single and if the sales are going great, then the 2nd single could be a big budget video.

There was a lot of ish that went down, a lot of SHADY ish that sony did, and it wasn't just the budget of the video.

very true, but i don't think that michael's personal attacks directed towards Mr. Mottola would have helped at all. The whole incident reflected very badly on MJ and rightly so.

well Tommy Matolla got the boot somehow, I think MJ must've done something right.

I also think that MJ was tired of being quiet about things. He was gonna get talked about anyways...they were already talking about how "bad" Invincible was selling. MJ knew it would reflect badly on him when he went out and spoke the truth. I think that's commendable.

The truth? You don't seriously believe that do you? Wasn't it just a rather desperate display of blaming somebody else to protect one's own self esteem? Surely someone other than MJ must be responsible if MJ's album isn't selling that well... I can't remember anyone siding at all with him during this episode, while there were very many who were very quick to defend Mottola.

The truth that record companies screw over black artists? yes, that's the truth.

And Sony SCREWED mj over, and that's point blank.

All I know Tommy Matolla got outed and I remember there were a lot of inside dealings between MJ and some executive people to make that happen. Now MJ being vocal about it, as far as that being the right decision for his image or not is not relevant. MJ felt that he'd had enough of being the 'song and dance man' and he was done being quiet. I know he knew the consequences of that, but i don't think he gave a flying f'k...he was pissed. His efforts got him what HE wanted in the long run....being a free agent, getting Tommy Matolla OUT, and keeping that catalogue.

some fans just give the impression that MJ is not a smart business person. most of the people he's worked with, we don't hear from anymore. MJ is still here. you have to spend money to make money. i don't think there's any such thing as too much money, if you want to make a good quality product. at the same time, i'm not bashing the possibility of making a great concept video without hardly spending anything. and while some people may spend a lot of money and make a flop art work, it's not enough to justify point blank, unequivocally, that spending great amounts of money on a great video is a bad idea. it's like aphrodite jones spending her own money on that book. some fans may not be having a bright sunshiny day, if they did not read that book.

if MJ can't get someone to financially help him, he can help himself.

MJ has nothing to prove. He's done it all. and you can never say never. call me a loon. but i say, it's possible for MJ to repeat his amazing feats bar none....because he believes he can do it, as he has proven, though he has met with naysaying.

I think this is a situation that is very similair to a older athlete in the NBA, NFL or boxing who is not on the level that he once was,but his pride makes him feel that he is. Very touchy subject. A older athlete who was once great, might feel he is still worth that last big contract, but in reality if you go by his most recent performances,he is not. SHAQ in basketball, or a boxer like Roy Jones jr. If im a promoter, there is no way im giving Roy a ridiculous contract offer because im not confident i will get the profit after his losses to Glen Johnson and Tarver (twice).

Im a huge Michael Jackson fan,but we have to look at the reality if you are part of the record label. After die hard fans buy the album, are you 100% confident that the average music fan or Non fan will buy the album to help you get a profit from making 20 million dollar vidoes?

Consideing the allegations MJ is coming off of,i dont see how anyone can be 100% positive that will happen.

I know the die hard MJ fans know he is innocent, but what about the non fans and the average music fans.

You can't rely soley on your die hard fan base,if your going to be a artist who is expensive when it comes to promotion.

You had better be selling on the Kanye West figures 1st week.

I think as a label in a situation with a older artist like MJ or Prince or Madonna, you have to see what type of sales ability they still have before committing to spending a lot on them like you did when they were in there primes.

It's just being smart as a record label

i don't think Michael still wants to make videos.he is bored with this.he wants something NEW!

I think if ANYTHING thats the MAIN thing he wants to do. He's interested in film. So I think that videos are gonna be his main focus.
