Petition ... Sydneysider Amanda Norris wants Neverland to be turned into a park for children. Photo: James Brickwood

A DIEHARD Australian Michael Jackson fan who set up an online petition to reopen the dead singer's notorious Neverland Valley ranch has been swamped with responses from around the world.

Amanda Norris, from St Ives, wants the estate in California to be converted into a park for children.

The 32-year-old promotions co-ordinator's petition, Neverland for the Children, went live last month and has received more than 3200 signatures from fans. The most support is coming from Italy, the Philippines, the US, Australia and Japan.

"The response has been unbelievable," Ms Norris said. "There is no way I expected so many people to respond. People think I'm totally fanatical about Michael Jackson but there are some fans out there who are so unbelievably loyal."

People from 96 countries have been in touch via email, Facebook and Twitter, she said. Supporters want the ranch, which Jackson bought in 1988, to be reopened for visits from sick children and childrens' charities worldwide.

Jackson used to open Neverland, complete with its own amusement park and zoo, to sick children and their families. It closed in 2006 after the property became the focus of allegations against Jackson for sexual misconduct with minors.

Ms Norris is planning to go to Indiana for the first Jackson "Fanvention", which will commemorate the first anniversary of Jackson's death in June.

"I am hoping to get 10,000 signatures by June and to take it to the Neverland estate," Ms Norris said.

Ms Norris was contacted via Facebook to be one of two Australian ambassadors for Jackson fans to sign an Australian flag by the organiser of the online group Justice 4 Michael Jackson, Johan Den Dekker.

The online group will take signed national flags to the hearing for Jackson's doctor, Conrad Murray, accused of involuntary manslaughter over Jackson's death and due in court on June 14. The flags will be draped around Jackson's crypt.

I think this is awesome, i want NEVERLAND REOPENED, its will be Michael's dream to be for children also

well, if the estate has money to produce Cirque de Soleil show then I'm sure the estate can find money to reopen NL someday in the future

So fans expect Michael's money to pay for something he closed and half sold off?

In my opinion.....The Magic is gone without Michael there...HE WAS what Neverland was all about..:(

I wish her well, and I think something like a "Childrens's Park" could
happen; but only if the current people who control Neverland can make it into a for profit venture.

My hope is that some day Michael's children: Prince, Paris, and Blanket regain total control of the Neverland Ranch and do with it just what they want to.

Th estate doesnt have extra money _they are still trying to make money
to pay off all expneses and become solvent ...
The Cirque de Soleil show will make money for Michaels estate
opening Never land would be a huge expense unless they can get
fans and some big corporations on board to support it as a charity ..

They could also open a park or museum there for the public which could generate funds

she is doing what i would do. Neverland is a magical place. Michael loved it and deep down im sure there were parts of neverland he still loved. I would love to see it used for what Michael wanted it used for. Michael loved having kids there it would make him happy again. As hard as it would be to see Neverland like it once was i do think it would be good for it to be used as it was intended. Making children happy was what Michael was all about. Even if he isn't there his memory is. And even though i cant see Michael without Neverland or Neverland without Michael id want it to be used the way HE wanted it to be used. For the Children.

EXACTLY. what better way to remember the king then in his own castle.

where the heck is she , i want to sign up , i think it is a fantastic idea and michael spent way to much time there for there not to be some of his spirit still lingering around.

nice but quite hard to achieve.

First of all Neverland is 2 hours away from LA and the road that goes there is a county road which is narrow and not suitable for high amounts of traffic. It's reported that the neighbors (who happen to be farmers, wineries etc) are not wanting the area to become an attraction. Furthermore Neverland is now co-owned by Colony Capital.

So such project to turn Neverland to a park, attraction etc would require

- agreement of the neighbors and the local government to change the zoning
- local government willing to build or allowing you to build wider roads
- a good amount of investment to build hotels, eating establishments as well as rebuilding the park and the zoo
and so on

They could also open a park or museum there for the public which could generate funds

That's what I think should happen as well! I think it would be a great thing for everyone :)

the estate has never not been solvent, and he didn't sell Neverland off. it's turned into a joint venture. if the estate wanted to pay for something like this, they could.

i'd go for this, if MJ didn't feel the way he did, after they sullied it, and if i couldn't understand why he felt the way he did.

Tom Barrack (half owner of Neverland/Sycamore) from Colony Capital IS one of the neighbours.

And yes Michael chose this place as it was far away from the public. The irony of having this private place opened up for the public is not lost on me. Everything about Michael's life was an attraction. This was the only place that was his sanctuary. Yes 1000s & 1000s of kids visited Neverland, but that was MJs choice.

Michael's soul's STILL IN NEVERLAND, he never really gave Neverland away, NEVER, he tried as hard as he could to KEEP HIS Nerverland...

We all know Michael was angry one time, but he would then forgive, thats what happened with Neverland, Neverland was a place that he wanted AGAIN, Michael was IN PEACE with Neverland, in fact he felt that leaving Neverland would mean he was ruined, HE LOVED NEVERLAND

Michael Jackson LIVES ON, so is not like "without Michael... etc" because Michael SOUL IS ALIVE, MICHAEL LEAVES ON.

Thanks

The "ideal" of Neverland can live on forever, but except for the house and other permanent buildings, it just is no longer the Neverland that Michael once had. The trains, the rides, the animals, they are no more. Can they be resurrected? Perhaps with much work and dedication. Does Michael's soul live on there? I just don't know. Would he want Neverland to be re-established for charitable works, perhaps. Because he did not completely rid himself of the property opens ideas that he did not want to totally give up his original concept for it all. Or did he not want to totally lose what he put so much into, for his children to do with as they wish at some point in their lives.

There are many very fortunate people on this board that were given access to NVL at some point or another. I can only say what I felt and what I feel now- - - I just don't know that it would be ever be a happy place for me ever again. Could I go back there again feeling anything but a huge loss and sadness, honestly at this point in time, NO.

i think it's not fair to say a property is stronger than its owner. Michael's soul is in Michael. and ruining Neverland can never ruin Michael. Michael defines Neverland, but Neverland cannot define Michael.

I don't think it's possible for logistic reasons, besides if the estate buys is again or w/e happens in the future I think it should be the kid's decision,it was their house after all and they should be the ones to decide what to do with it not random fans..Maybe Neverland represents something very important for them and they don't want to turn it into a touristic attraction.

the petition means nothing..there are many legal hassles that would probably have to be sorted thru b4 they let it open to public. and out of respect to the family i think they should wait a couple of years..let his children cope first before they have to see advertisements of their old home for people to come visit on tv, mags etc...

i really dont see the rush in opening it so soon.

True, but in addition if you watch the 45th birthday part video of Michael, he said that he was trying to make Neverland more accessible to the fans, and then the allegations got in the way

well said. same ole arguments in this thread from the fans who dont want it reopened to those who do. cant we change the record or just move on.its like groundhog day in here.whatever will happen to it will happen.the haters already won. they drove mj out of his home and killed him.so u cant blame some fans for wanting to have some sort of hollow victory by the estate/whoever retaning it and turning it back it to what mj created in the first place

Im sorry, its a sweet idea but its not going to happen for many reasons
1. Neverland is located 5 miles from the village of Los Olivos, up a narrow mountain road, in the middle of a rural agricultural area. The land is zoned for agricultural use only, for Neverland to become a tourist attraction like Graceland, the zoning laws would have to be changed.
2. The whole area infastructure would have to be changed, there are no public facilities, there are no shops , not even street lights.
3. The estate does dont have 100% control over Neverland. Neverland is jointly owned by Colony Capital and the estate.
4.All of Michael possesions, all the animals, all the furniture from the house, all the rides are not on the property any more. Even the famous golden gate has been taken away.
5. The magical air, Michaels presence, that certain something that made Neverand special is no longer there.
this is what Neverland looks like now, still beautiful but just an empty shell http://www.time.com/time/photogallery/0,29307,1908641,00.html/

I agree. In the end of the day the final decision should be with Prince, Paris and Blanket. Neverland was their home too and they're the best ones to decide what happens with Neverland. If they decide to keep it closed then let them to that. If they want to open it to the public like Graceland then that is their decision. Not ours. Not Joes. Not Jermaine's. Not Branca's. Their's.

I agree 100%

Neverland remains Beautiful to this day,
and Michael Jackson visits often.
I believe one day Neverland will be open to us fans, again.
