C4 orders The Trial of Michael Jackson docuseries

December 9, 2024

Channel 4 has commissioned Wonderhood Studios to produce the 4 x 60-minute series The Trial of Michael Jackson (working title).

The series will feature contributors who have never spoken before to plot the story of Michael Jackson’s 2005 criminal trial alongside Jackson’s rise to fame and life in the spotlight. It will forensically examine available archive to offer a deeper understanding of Jackson’s life as lived in front of the cameras.

Over 2,000 journalists from across the world descended upon the small city of Santa Maria, California for Jackson’s 2005 trial. Channels interrupted their regular broadcasting to show 24 hour rolling news coverage of the events. E! Entertainment and Sky News even worked together to recreate the trial, using a Jackson impersonator as a stand-in for Jackson in the dock.

Now, by revisiting the trial in forensic detail, this archive-driven series not only explores the relationship between Jackson and the media, but also documents his life story, as lived in the gaze of cameras. In doing so the series seeks to ask wider questions about race, fame, journalistic ethics and the American justice system.

The series was commissioned by Channel 4’s senior commissioning editor Anna Miralis and Alisa Pomeroy, Head of Documentaries and Factual Entertainment at Channel 4. The series was developed by Wonderhood’s Director of Development Tom Garton, Louise Kentleton and Tom Anstiss.

Miralis commented: “Made by an multi-award- winning production company, this remarkable series is destined to be compelling, insightful and truly remarkable. Many will remember the tumultuous media frenzy and the lasting effect it had on Jackson. The astonishing archive and accounts given by those featured will no doubt offer up a unique insight into this momentous trial and Jackson himself. “

Samantha Anstiss, Chief Creative Officer, Wonderhood Studios, said: “Michael Jackson’s mesmerising performances and groundbreaking music have made him one of the world’s most enduring global icons whose music is still listened to by millions across the globe. But in 2005 he faced the most dramatic 6 months of his life as he stood accused of heinous crimes. Through the prism of the trial in which he was found not guilty we explore his life, alongside themes of race, justice, money and fame, to tell this tragic tale.

Tom Garton, Director of Development Wonderhood Studios, added: “The 2005 criminal trial of Michael Jackson was unlike any other criminal trial in history. It was a trial, where the most famous man on the planet was in the dock. Now we have the opportunity to peel back the layers of the media circus around the trial, and to explore Jackson’s complicated legacy in detail.”

What is this nonsense? Michael was proven innocent in court. Do I trust Channel 4 to present the facts? No, they will put their own spin to make it appear that a wrong verdict was reached during the 2005 trial.

Also, it’s funny whenever there is a celebrity accused of wrong doing, the media try to bring the attention back to Michael and allegations against him. Jay Z is accused of raping a 13 year old girl. Let’s make it all about Michael who was proven innocent in the court. Honestly, the media can **** right off.

Almost 20 years since acquittal….i would never believe 20 years ago we’d still be reliving this shit lol. Honestly i just laugh at this point. I dont have the energy bother anymore lol. Michael is gone and it can’t hurt him. Thats what I hold onto.

I remember watching one of those recreations, perhaps the Sky one. Was on every day for about 5 mins with actors reading the transcripts.

Don't know what the agenda is with this one. Or why it needs to be 4 hours.

Is Channel 4 even relevant in these days? This will probably blow over and not make any noise unless we give it attention.

But it does annoy me how everytime someone gets exposed for being a predator, here the media or someone goes trying to drag Michael in it. This man has been dead for 15 years and they still can't let their weird agenda against him go. Yeah he's gone but think about how this shit affects his family. I know fans are upset about this, but as I mentioned, hopefully this won't do numbers and blow over.

Didn't Dan Greed$ want to do the same thing? Wouldn't be surprised if he had some kind of connection to this..

Another biased hit piece that nobody (with a brain) will take seriously. Waste of everyone's time.

Channel 4 has lost a lot of money recently. They are swirling around the toilet bowl.

I'm not sure in the current day and age, trying to spin a narrative around a trial where every page of transcript is available online will work for them.

Plus, this isn't the "new" story they made LN out to be. This is nearly 20 years ago at this point.

This is beyond ridiculous. It was ridiculous numerous so-called documentaries ago. Michael was vindicated. The court transcripts are out there. Unless its a doc on how Michael was a victim of false allegations they can keep it. I really hope the public finally sees through this bull by now. 😑

Is this the project Charles Thomson wrote the script for that covid delayed/cancelled? Or has that one been scrapped for good?

If not, then covid stole a big chance of getting a good series about 2005 out and instead we get this ****

I hope they highlight all the ridiculous trumped up "evidence" e.g. adult mag that hadn't been published yet with accusers prints on. The casual viewer needs to see how farcical the whole ordeal was.

Wouldn't it be great if this was a positive piece identifying for a wider audience exactly why he was not guilty and examining all of the lies that were told... It won't be. It'll be trashy tabloid bullshit from start to finish!
