Official Behind the Mask video leak?

Why was he in the studio with will.i.am then for the mixes? it's all on camera.

This video is stylish but empty IMO--glossy veneer with little authentic emotional substance, also it does not match the song. The song says the woman is wearing a mask, but in the video the woman is NOT wearing a mask, while the male she is attracted to IS wearing a mask. This is the opposite of the song. The song is asking for authenticity. Where is ANY authenticity in the video? It's like something out of a Madonna Let's Vogue type of video IMO. MJ always had his videos/films tell a story but this story is devoid of interesting content-lots of costumes and high-tech surfaces but little content IMO.

It reminds me of the club scene in the first Matrix film, where Neo goes to meet Trinity for the first time. That club scene is a facade where partiers stay in the Matrix, but Trinity will help Neo LEAVE the Matrix. This video stays in the Matrix. Just my opinion.

Too bad they didn't release The Way You Love Me as a single and make a film for it as well. I love that song. :)

It´s a nice video but I prefer the other video with the fans.
I love to see how fans from different parts of the word are inspired of Michael and love him.

WOW it was a great video, but if I will have to say in any of this then I like the other official video with all the fans better actually... no arguing here, I like both BUT the other was better...

Thanks. You worded it better I did: empty. Indeed, that's how I felt too.

i think this version is awesome but I understand that the estate were trying to achieve something with the fan video. It showed that we were keeping michael alive all around the world. It was US. I think the idea was really nice and it was lovely to see how we were all united by one man but it didnt stand the test of time. I would rewatch it over and over again. This one however would do much better with time....

You echoed my sentiments exactly.

Stupid fans in the top comments on the video... "alive", these people still think MJ is behind all of this.

This is a beautiful video! I don't see the big deal about the club... I think it's cool! ;) I remember ppl cubbing to MJ's music in the 90s, they were all remixes. I simply loved all the masks they used from Michael's other short films. I actually stopped breathing every time one of the dancers removed their mask because I was still expecting to see Michael's face. When the girl kissed "Spike" at 2:56 I was actually squealing. Lol :D Spike playing the sax was great, it made me smile. I also liked the Thriller mask which morphed into werewolf-MJ. Oooh, and isn't it wonderful to see Michael in a video? Admittedly, it was just footage from his old videos, concerts and Moonwalker but they placed it well.

You know, I don't think it was the clubs/parties themselves that he didn't like, though I'm sure he didn't like the underbelly of the club scene i.e. recreational drug use, groupies and the like. He was however, a notorious people-watcher and, from what he's said and hinted at in the past, enjoyed listening to others' music and watching people have a good time. It may have been more how people would treat him/how they'd act when they knew he was in the place. Michael himself mentioned it in an interview or two: people would crowd him for autographs and pics, the dj's would start playing his songs back-to-back, everyone tried to get HIM to dance to HIS OWN songs, etc. Pretty much pushing him into an impromptu concert when he just wanted to unwind and people-watch; it became work instead of play, so he bowed out of the whole scene all together cuz it was just too troublesome in addition to probably getting older and outgrowing the whole nightlife scene lol. He used to actually enjoy going to Studio 54 in it's prime (probably) cuz it was the kind of night spot where celebs and everyday joes could hob-knob together but celebs didn't feel smothered; he seemed to like that, when he was able to blend in with the crowd instead being the focus OF the crowd...

But anyways lol, I like it personally. Nothing is ever gonna be "MJ-calibur" again I'm afraid, we'll never know what he might've liked to see done with the song and I don't know if any of us could've even predicted what he would've done visually with BTM. He was always unpredictable in that respect.

I'm just glad that someone put a respectable amount of effort into an ACTUAL tribute-natured video, and didn't just mash a bunch of random clips of people doing pleasant things together and set it to one of Michael's songs lol. I do like how they incorporated shots of Michael into the various masks, very cool. I don't think it was made to be a ground-breaking masterpiece lol, just an up-beat tribute to a master :flowers:.

Yes this is the proper video that was shot around the same time as Hollywood Tonight. It was choreographed by Chucky Klapow

As well as The Jabbawockeez. The mask concepts were interesting. It was nice to see Spike in there and Maestros skeleton mask. I won't let Chuckys involvement ruin it for me.

THIS^^^^^

What MJ fan did'nt want to be in one of his videos? Shame it didn't work, coz no one knew about the video or the song. Anyone who I've showed this unreleased video to is like, wow, I've never heard this song, why didn't they release it?

Everyones brushing it off as just some club scene video and haven't noticed all the small little things, or looking too deep into the relationship between the lyrics and the video instead of accepting it for what it is. This is the video I was waiting for, something original that wasn't a rehash of old MJ stuff. Something original and a good tribute. The fan video is just fans doing the same old choreography (badly may i add) which is what Michael didn't like, he liked doing new things, not the same old thing over and over. If I see the Smooth Criminal choreography in one more video, I'll kill myself, lol.

Has anybody uploaded it to the 2000 watts section? I've been surfing the thread almost entirely and every repost/reupload I come across seems to have been banned or taken down by the user... I'd like to watch it just to build an opinion on it.

Totally understand what you're saying. I honestly kinda like it that way though. Well I don't like it, rather I sort of prefer it.... sort of lol. I guess creative projects (at least MJ related ones) don't sit right with me when they kind of try to "pick up where he left off" so to speak, I mean this as far as professionally-done tribute videos go. Not trying to convince anyone of anything other than what they feel, this is just how it comes across to me personally. It feels inauthentic when people try to pretend that the giant gaping whole of (the lack of) his presence isn't there, I dunno it's weird to explain.....

Ok, so take the Staples Center Memorial, out of the few things that I could bear to watch, John Mayer's "Human Nature" performance really resonated with me. It was a gorgeous instrumental rehash, but I really liked/respected how John decided to leave the vocals out, because Michael wasn't there to sing them himself. The great void of Michael's absence was treated like hallowed ground, instead of like a space that people have to figure out how to fill. There's a reverence about it that soothes me. I guess that's why BTM is easy for me to digest even though, well done as it is, it's fairly cosmetic; there is no performer, no artist, no storyline because the master has exited. All that's left are the music, the images and the dance.

Not to say that new artists shouldn't reach, of course they should. But when it comes to MJ's work that came from his hands and imagination, if he's not here to call the shots, it's almost a conceit to see if you can rework it in an attempt to rival his actual existing work. Kinda like taking the Mona Lisa down and saying "let me finish it, I have an idea of what da Vinci might've wanted to do with it next" lol. Hang it up, showcase it, highlight it, but let the unfinished brushstrokes speak in lieu of the master's loving hand.

There's no wrong or right to any of this of course, everyone wants to see different things when it comes to MJ's work. That's just how I feel about it........ and sorry I got all mushy lol.
