A London music studio has re-created the heart-stopping moment Michael Jackson dangled his nine-month-old son from a fifth-floor Berlin hotel balcony.
Madonna and Child, a life-sized sculpture of the late king of pop with baby Prince Michael II, has been installed at Premises in Hackney, causing passers-by to do a double-take.
Los Angeles-based artist Maria von Köhler, a former Royal Academy of Arts student, was commissioned to create the piece, made of polyester resin, finished in acrylic and wax. It is on display until May 1 then moves to LA.

From their own website:

Michael Jackson arrives at The Premises

As regular visitors here may have already noticed, there is a new sculpture suspended twenty feet up on the side of our building. It’s a life-sized depiction of the moment in Berlin in 2002, when Michael Jackson dangled his baby out of the window. Strange as it may seem, it’s called Madonna and Child and it’s been installed in our office window. Swedish-born sculptor Maria von Köhler spent six months, first modelling it in clay then, from a plaster mould, it was cast in polyester resin and finished in acrylic and wax.
Maria von Köhler has exhibited widely since she graduated with an MA from the Royal Academy Schools, Royal Academy of Arts in London in 2003. Her work is housed in collections worldwide, including The Zabludowicz Collection and The David Roberts Art Foundation, London. Von Köhler has held solo exhibitions at Seventeen, IMT and The Kiosk Project, London, as well as Seeline Gallery, Los Angeles and Galerie Lieser, Berlin. Other exhibition highlights include: When We Build Let Us Think We Build Forever, BALTIC, Gateshead; Larry’s Cocktails, Gagosian Gallery, London; National Geographic, Faggionato Fine Art, London; RightOn/Write Off, Chapman Fine Arts, London; Fresh, MOCA, Los Angeles; Selected Sculpture, Max Wigram Gallery, London.

Madonna and Child is on display at 209 Hackney Rd until May 1st 2011.

Hey Webbie, you might want to post this in the Fans Take Action section. This is where we (Media Advocacy Team) will post stories that require action. I think we will need to actually look at this and post to our standard places and also send an email out through the MJJC Legacy Project Email Alert Distribution list. Let me know if you want us to post what you posted here in the Fans Take Action Section or do you want to. I will wait to hear from you before doing anything.

Maria MJ and DeborahFfrench, I will be sending you a PM on this.

Hi Windy,

just posted it here, hope that is correct?

The Media Advocacy Team is not the same as MJJ Justice Project, is it?

Just asking, because I received a comment on my website from the MJJ Justice project, saying this: "We think it’s better not to bring too much attention to this piece of ‘art’ "

Michael Jackson sculpture at Premises Studios sparks ‘hate campaign’ REFUSES TO TAKE ARTWORK DOWN

Posted in 2011 Archive on April 4, 2011 by Webbie Hackney music studio The Premises has been on the receiving end of ‘hate mail’ after they installed a Michael Jackson sculpture.
The controversial artwork – called Madonna and Child – depicts the moment in Berlin in 2002 when the King of Pop held his baby out of a window. True to the original incident, the life-size statue leans out of the building.
Now the Premises Studios has become the target of abusive emails from Jackson fans, who say the sculpture is an insult to their hero.
One described it as: “The most outrageous sick thing that could have ever gone on in the city of London.”
Viv Broughton, Chief Executive of the Premises Studios, insisted that the artwork would not be taken down: “The sculpture recreates a moment of high drama in music history. The fans turned him into a deity and he in turn offered them his son. Lots of people have come here to view it. Most people think it’s brilliant.”

I wouldn't consider my personal email to them as abusive. I'm highly disappointed they still won't take it down. :sigh: What else can we do here? Start a petition?

You wrote that? I think at this point, we're just giving them attention. I dunno what else can be done, a petition is a good idea but do they really work? Hopefully they take it down soon and ditch the idea to have it circulate.

Didn't write the email mentioned in the article, if that's what you're asking. I posted what I wrote to them in this thread back on the second page. :)

Owners of Hackney music studio: Statue is about extreme fan worship…

Posted in 2011 Archive on April 6, 2011 by Webbie The owners of a Hackney music studio who installed a sculpture of Michael Jackson dangling his baby son out of a window have received death threats from fans.
Madonna and Child recreates the moment in 2002 when the singer held Prince Michael II over the balcony of a hotel window in Berlin. Fans say the artwork is an insult to the King of Pop’s memory.
One email from a Londoner read: “I think we will come to put the fire, or something worst [sic] in your exhibit. Don’t **** with the fans of the King.”
Another email said that the sculpture was “the most outrageous sick thing that could have ever gone on in the city of London“. On the michaeljackson.com website, fans have discussed methods of removing the statue, including throwing stones at it.
Studio owner Viv Broughton said: “Since the Evening Standard published an article about the sculpture we have been inundated with weird and scary emails from Michael Jackson fans.
“Madonna and Child is as much about extreme fan worship as it is about Michael Jackson. Lots of people have come here to view it. Most people think it’s brilliant.”
The sculpture by Swedish artist Maria von Köhler is showing at 209 Hackney Road until May 1.

Thank you Webbie for bringing this on focus.
People have very sick ways of being inventive and generating attention.
Hard to believe these studio owners hope to increase their roster of clients by pulling this outrageous publicity stunt.
Whatever the case, we as fans need to go one step further in our commentary and prove their claims false. We are much more than a crazed aggregate--we are thinking and civilized people who can question motives and irrational behavior.

The Jackson family get's upset over someone on American Idol saying ''I hope i don't have a pepsi insident'' and this don't seem to bother them. Or have i missed something?

What the artist done is very wrong, I hope she apologises and destroys that crappy "artwork" she made.

Someone who has contact details to the Estate need to sort this out.

This needs to be taken with legal action.

Yes this is most disturbing. I don't care how they spin it, there is no reason for this.

This is one of the stories that the Media Advocacy team is working on this week. Be on the look out on information on this and a couple other stories.

‘MADONNA AND CHILD’ JACKSON SCULPTURE IN EAST LONDON CAUSES ALARM AND DISTRESS, AND THIS IS EXACTLY WHY WE CAN GET IT REMOVED (LEGALLY)
By now, most Jackson fans will be fully aware of the distasteful and sacrilegious piece of ‘artwork’ constructed by artist Maria von Kohler which is currently hanging out of the window of The Premises Recording Studio on Hackney Road in East London. This controversial piece captures a brief few seconds of Michael Jackson’s life, reducing his life and legacy to a mere moment in time for which he was ridiculed and condemned. The intent of this piece is thereby clearly obvious. Kohler’s piece focuses on an incident which took place in Berlin in 2002, when the star got caught up in the excitement of the moment, and lifted up his youngest child at one of the hotel’s windows in order to show excited fans below. Despite having a firm grip on the child, the media misleadingly reported that the star ‘dangled’ the baby out of the window, and this caused much controversy for which Jackson later apologised, several times, admitting that it was a mistake. The media furore that ensued meant that Jackson’s mistake was on public record and therefore available for all to exploit, forever.

Kohler, instead of using her art to focus on the wealth of good and positive deeds Jackson contributed to in his lifetime, has purposely created a controversial piece in order to attract attention. It is disconcerting to say the least, that a recording studio would have such a piece displayed so publicly, if at all. Controversial works can sometimes be seen in art galleries, but for a studio whose clients will inevitably include some who have been inspired and influenced by the innovative and multi talented Jackson, it is absurd, and it is surely garnering publicity of the worst kind. Notwithstanding this, the recording studios, having allowed this piece to hang out of its window and into the public realm, are now thoroughly enjoying the controversy. On the company’s Twitter site, they revel in the controversy, mocking and laughing at fans who naturally feel horrified to see someone they admire and respect – not to mention someone’s brother, father, and son – once again mocked and vilified in this way, particularly now that he has no voice and thus no chance to respond.

Of course, it is not just Jackson fans who feel shocked by this latest attack on Jackson’s character and legacy, but also Christians, and in particular, Catholics. Kohler’s piece has been controversially titled ‘Madonna and Child’ thus deliberately inciting those who deem Christ’s mother as holy and hold her in high regard. By suggesting that Jackson is in some way comparable to the holy figure of Christ’s mother – and by default, his son being akin to a Christ figure? – Kohler is treading on dangerous ground indeed. It is no surprise that she took the safer and increasingly tiresome option of attacking the Christian faith as opposed to giving the piece a title which might incite members of any other religion. The Premises complain that they have received ‘scary’ and disturbing threats, including threats of arson and vandalism. It is likely that had the artist dared to incorporate ‘Allah’ into the title instead of ‘Madonna’, such threats might well have culminated in serious consequences. But it is often the case that artists who seek to be controversial or clever are actually cowards who simply focus on what they consider an easy target.

So, what can those who feel upset do about this sculpture? Firstly, the attitude of the studio has been made clear on their Twitter account. They are revelling in the controversy and in fact, encouraging it by posting fans comments and then ridiculing them. The Premises are clearly not going to back down. No amount of posts on their page or petitions to have the piece ‘removed immediately’ is going to be effective. We need to take proper action, and as soon as possible, before this piece is moved, on 1st May, to Los Angeles for its next round of controversy. Jackson has often been a free-for-all target, but next time, the target could be your son, brother or father. If we allow this and do not act now, then it opens the floodgates to similar works being paraded on public streets in the future.

THE IMPORTANT FACTS YOU NEED TO KNOW:

The Public Order Act 1986

In the UK, we have an effective Act: The Public Order Act 1986. The Public Order Act 1986 creates offences commonly used by United Kingdom police to deal with public disorder and violence.

Section 4A of the Public Order Act 1986, which was inserted by section 154 of the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994, states:
(1) A person is guilty of an offence if, with intent to cause a person harassment, alarm or distress, he:

(a) uses threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour, or disorderly behaviour, or

(b) displays any writing, sign or other visible representation which is threatening, abusive or insulting, thereby causing that or another person harassment, alarm or distress.

(2) An offence under this section may be committed in a public or a private place, except that no offence is committed where the words or behaviour are used, or the writing, sign or other visible representation is displayed, by a person inside a dwelling and the person who is harassed, alarmed or distressed is also inside that or another dwelling.

(3) It is a defence for the accused to prove:

(a) that he was inside a dwelling and had no reason to believe that the words or behaviour used, or the writing, sign or other visible representation displayed, would be heard or seen by a person outside that or any other dwelling, or
(b) that his conduct was reasonable”

As you can see, we have such a good case. Just a brief glance at the comments being posted on the studio’s website and the reaction Kohler’s piece has provoked prove without a doubt that many people consider it abusive and insulting and it cannot be disputed that it has caused much alarm and distress. The fact that this piece is hanging out onto a public street gives us more reason to complain under the Act, since this is not something hidden inside a building and neither is it something that is a pay-to-view product. Anyone passing by the recording studio will be confronted by this alarming piece, whether they choose to be or otherwise.

HOW TO COMPLAIN

In each case, tell the police that you want to report an offence under the Public Order Act 1986 under Section 4A, 1(b) and 2. Try to come across as a responsible and concerned citizen rather than as an angry fan. This will ensure that your complaint is treated in a fair and serious manner. They will ask for the location of the crime, which is:

The Premises
209 Hackney Road London E2 8JL

Email Hackney Police Station: hackneypolice@met.police.uk

Call the Metropolitan Police on 0300 123 1212 (they will take your details and give you a reference number)

Visit the station at:

An additional thought: Hate crime
Here in the UK, we also have laws against racist or religious hate crime. Hate crimes and incidents are any crime or incident which is targeted at a victim because of the offender’s hostility or prejudice against an identifiable group of people, and they are taken very seriously.
Any incident or crime which is perceived to be motivated because of a person’s religion will be recorded as such. Hate crimes can be committed against a person or property.
A religious hate crime is:
“Any criminal offence which is perceived, by the victim or any other person, to be motivated by a hostility or prejudice based on a person’s religion or perceived religion”

This piece has been named ‘Madonna and Child’ clearly to create alarm, upset, distress and controversy. If you are a Christian who feels strongly that the naming of this piece has been motivated by prejudice against your faith, then you have a right to report it as a hate crime. You can find the link to make a report here:

I have written in their blog

http://www.premisesstudios.com/blog/michael-jackson-arrives-the-premises/

First of ALL, you are NOT right in maintining this would be a FAITHFUL “work of art” to a real event. I have been there at the same time, standing directly below when it happened. Michael Jackson didn’t dangle his son out from the WINDOW, he was holding his son over the BALCONY in Berlin only for at most three-quarter seconds, and in fact firm and safe.

This Miss doesn’t know nothing about that, unless what was reported in the Media, and obviously she knows nothing about Michael, and obviously she didn’t want to know something about him. I met him the same day in his suite, he was so unsettled and downhearted about this incident, only a split second of improvidence, and it must have been Michael Jackson so that followed him his whole life, and not only his life, even after his death too, this is UNBELIEVABLE and CRUEL, PLEASE, think about!

He has been such a feeling lovely person, this seems so far away from the artist, who has committed this piece of mental cruelty. It is VERY mean to use an human being which is passed on such a dramatic tragic sad way.
I never will understand why artists have such stoned hearts, making things only to have success. But maybe it‘s the world how it is presented by persons like you … so it is.

With very sad greetings

Hello,
I work with Miss Von Kohler, and we are currently gathering a cross-section of opinions on the sculpture, with a view to possibly putting them together in book form.

I was wondering if you might be interested in writing us a short piece outlining your thoughts, and perhaps we could even address some of your queries to the artist herself.

Let me know if this is something that might interest you, and hopefully we can discuss this further.

Thanks,

Oli

I'm not even going to comment on this :swoon:
