Michael Jackson Drug Costs 70 O.C. jobs

Teva Pharmaceuticals Inc., an Irvine drug maker, laid off 70 workers last month after stopping production of an anesthetic that was tied to Michael Jackson's death last year, a company spokeswoman confirmed.

The company was not implicated in Jackson's death but was one of three drug makers that manufacture the powerful sedative Propofol.

The Los Angeles County Coroner found last year that Jackson's death was due to an overdose of Propofol, which his doctor said he administered to help Jackson sleep.

Teva advised the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in May that it would discontinue production of Propofol. Denise Bradley, a Teva spokeswoman, said at the time that the drug is hard to manufacture and the company gets little or no profit from it.

The company had to halt production last year and recall some Propofol after 41 patients fell ill with flu-like symptoms due to elevated endotoxin levels found in some vials of the sedative.

The company also faces numerous lawsuits over the drug.

Bradley said Thursday the layoffs in Irvine were because the company had stopped production of the drug.

Teva is headquartered in Israel. The Irvine facility is the site of the former Sicor Inc., which Teva bought in 2003 for $3.4 billion.

I think this article means Teva Pharmaceuticals Inc. has stopped their production of propofol and not all production of propofol has been discontinued, meaning there are other companies that still make this.

Yeah I agree, but it's still a start. I think it's good that at least one company so far is becoming more aware. Maybe in the future others will follow?

Interesting though.

Just heard about this. Although, I don't know if it's linked to Murray or what.

I remember them saying they were going to make harsher laws and regulations on the drug, but not stop making it.

this was previously discussed. it looks like after stopping propofol production they laid of workers

here's my post from previous thread

First of all apparently Teva is not the only manufacturer of Propofol. It's just an international based manufacturer that produces generic Propofol. So other companies are still continuing to produce the drug.

Secondly if you remember some time after Michael's death there was a recall for Propofol due to manufacturing error by Teva and they are facing civil suits because of that manufacturing error. The 250 lawsuits are from 2008 and this is the info for that

In 2008, propofol was connected to a hepatitis C outbreak that infected as many as 114 people. Vials of propofol were allegedly used to treat more than one patient each, spreading the liver disease. Close to 250 lawsuits have been filed in connection with the outbreak.

In May one person won their lawsuit and Teva is required to pay $356 million to that person. However they are appealing the lawsuit saying that it was the hospital that misused the drug (giving it more than one person)..

Yeah, this is old news.
The fact alone that Teva discontinued propofol production speaks of acknowledgement of a risk for reckless use.
I sure hope other companies will invest in research to come up with safer sedatives.
But what is absolutely mandatory is a strict set of laws regarding the use of such medication. Administering this drug outside a hospital setting should be completely illegal.

Where law allows space for lineant action there is space for abuse.

I spoke with our critical care pharmacist at work this past weekend and he re-iterated that it is still available without new restrictions from other pharmaceutical manufacturors. The Teva situation is unique in this situation, as Ivy explained a few posts earlier. With that said, I would imagine that all sorts of companies and agencies are keeping an eye on future developments/restrictions being put in place r/t to administration.

I think Propofol should be made illegal when used outside an hospital setting. point is I dont belive Mike wouldn't have used anything illegal and Dr. Death wouldn't have been able to get his mucky paws on it so easily.

true because he was not an anesthest provider #1 using outside a hospital setting#2 not monitering the patient 24/7 #3 not have the other equipment needed while using such a powerful drug, (EKG, blood pressure cuff and c02.# 4 not knowing how to do cpr. If there is something missing from this list, please fill it in . Thanks.

What I feel reading that is that it could be used on Murray's side, like hey by the time MJ was there we didn't have all those patients having problem with it so we didn't know, so Murray didn't know, so he's not guilty..

Makes me sick.

Its not because it killed Michael that it is highly dangerous! it,s because it was used in an innapropriate way by a stupid doctor that MJ died.

Propofol is not THE guilty one, it's MURRAY. They are just trying to take our mind somewhere else...
