Spike Lee announces Off The Wall Documentary - Estate Announcement Page 66

Re: Spike Lee announces Off The Wall Documentary

Well, if you listen to the demos of DSTYGE and WDAN Randy was on them, so I think he could contribute to this. Whatever feelings some fans may have about him he was a part of Michael's history, esp. during this era. They wrote songs together for the Jacksons albums and Randy played some instruments on Michael's demos, so he could tell a story or two.

Exactly, i love the interactions in those demos! family love :)

Spike Lee Will Follow-Up ‘Bad 25’ With A Doc About Michael Jackson’s ‘Off The Wall’ Record

... Lee had suggested he’d love to do more Michael Jackson album docs if the singer's estate and Sony/Epic Records, which released the majority of his recordings before and after his death, were willing, and it looks like both were pleased with “Bad 25” and have thus signed off. In an interview with Thompson On Hollywood about “Da Sweet Blood Of Jesus,” Lee revealed that he is currently working on a documentary about Jackson’s pioneering 1979 disco-pop solo album Off The Wall, which launched the singer into mega-stardom and led to the pop cultural juggernaut Thriller.

“I recently did ‘Bad 25,’ a making of Michael Jackson’s album and now we’re making ‘Off The Wall,’” he said.

... But during a recent Meet The Filmmaker Apple Store chat for “Da Sweet Blood Of Jesus,” when asked if he would return to “the Republic Of Brooklyn” for more narrative features set within the borough, Lee reminded the audience that one is already written. “Definitely,” he said, “I have a script that's a mutherf*cker. I just gotta get the money for it. It's called ‘Brooklyn Loves MJ.’ So if we get the money for that, you'll like that too.”

“Brooklyn Loves MJ,” which we've written about previously, is a Cain and Abel-esque story set against a backdrop of gentrification in Lee’s Fort Greene neighborhood during the summer of '09, when fans were mourning Jackson's death. Given that the singer's death and music is written into the script, including his likeness, image and myriad references beyond just an inclusion in the title, we’d assumed the stoppage on the project —it was all ready to go with a cast in 2009— was due to music rights. But since Lee, the MJ estate and Sony are on board for further Jackson documentaries, it sounds like funding is the main obstacle. Calling Megan Ellison, the current patron saint of American auteurs: do the right thing.

Of course. But there is too much hate and frustration in him, so even if he has some good stories to say, it wouldn't turn up well. Same goes for Jermaine.

''I CAN understand Stevie being called back'' or are you blind?

What's there to understand. He wrote the song on the album. He has to be there. What's up with the attitude? Chill.

Yes, but you implied that i said he shouldn't be there. When in fact that is complete BS, he should certainly be there. He wrote the best song on the record, don't twist my words again. Okay????

How do you know it wouldn't turn up well? He should be restricted to stay on topic and talk about the music. It will not be about his attitude towards the Estate.

Exactly, his feeling's on the estate doesn't have anything to do with a record that was released 36 years ago! Michael loved Randy. It's the estate he has anguish against..

Re: Spike Lee announces Off The Wall Documentary

Stevie has to be there since he wrote I Can't Help It. But I do not see the point in Siedah being in it. Yes, in Bad 25, but she had nothing to do with OTW. She will probably just talk about the influence the album had on her or something. Hopefully this isn't a sign of not enough material.

My thoughts exactly. What is she doing there? *sigh*

My interview for Spike's OFF THE WALL doc brought back memories of performing those songs on tour with MJ.

So she's going to talk about how she sang with Michael right before She's Out of My Life?

13 years after the albums release.. hmm, she doesn't belong there at all! confusing stuff huh... what are they gonna do? show Michael looking at Siedah as he transitions into SOOML?

Re: Spike Lee announces Off The Wall Documentary

I'm very glad he is interviewing Michael's mother & father, they're so proud of the artist and man that Michael became :) there first hand creation.. giving the world the most enjoyable gift, at an incomparable level

Re: Spike Lee announces Off The Wall Documentary

Nice to see that Joe and Katherine are in it.

Re: Spike Lee announces Off The Wall Documentary

I guess the Estate isn't behind the film :cheeky:

maybe they are, maybe they finally realize that Michael would never have existed without Katherine & Joseph...

I think it is independent project. But it IS Estate approved and Sony approved - because he is using MJ's likeness and music.

It's not the estate that I think have an issue with Katherine and Joe are in the movie ^

Sounds likely.

Ummm I don't think she was involved in OTW ....was she???

This.

I truly believe Lee will do an amazing job on this documentary because of these interviews.

I never thought about Michael's parents being in the film but, it is perfectly logical and I hope other family members will be in the film as well. Michael was living at home and his family supported him with OTW. It was his true coming-of-age project and they can give invaluable insight into Michael's thoughts and actions at the time.

I truly enjoyed these posts including sneaks into the documentary. I truly cannot wait to see it.

If it will accompany the Triumph tour (including live cds) after whatever initial release the documentary will be given, I will not even request another product from Estate/Sony except for the Victory tour and maybe an ultimate documentary on Thriller as it deserves. I would then be truly satisfied.

Re: Spike Lee announces Off The Wall Documentary

Sideah is a compelling storyteller. Who cares if she wasn't involved with this album. She'd be a good talking head (like the celebrities in Bad 25).

I would love there to be an official release of the Triumph Tour.. definitely the best tour that Michael ever did with his brother's, but i have very low expectations! i am excited about this documentary though.. very much so! it is something that Michael truly deserves.. there isn't enough praise in the world for the power that he was! plus.. i think i'm the only one who doesn't own a physical copy of The Jackson's Live! would be nice to see a 2 disc Blu-Ray/CD.. otherwise, i'll just buy the original CD or Vinyl

Re: Spike Lee announces Off The Wall Documentary

I have a feeling there might be some Jacksons-tour related release this year. They're already doing the Off The Wall doco this year and chronologically it syncs up with the Triumph tour, which the doco will almost certainly use footage from. Hopefully they do release a Jacksons tour and on Blu-ray! I haven't seen any yet so that'll be intriguing.

Very interested to see how this documentary turns out, especially as to what BTS footage is available :)

No she wasn't and they said she's gonna talk about performing those songs with him, but even that is untrue. Her only connection to OTW is singing IJCSLY right before She's out of my life. Whatever... Lol

She could always talk about Michael pretending to slap her ass during Working Day And Night lol

I wouldn't get your hopes up... nothing is ever likely.. of course i would love a concert release.. especially Triumph Tour since we only have a very bad split screen VHS rip... i can expect a re-release of the CD & Vinyl though... fingers crossed they release a 1981 spectacular in it's full form.. :D

Siedah looked stunning in the Bucharest concert.. jealous of Michael...
