The Discussion of MJ's Unreleased Tracks

My question is completely different: is this James Porte singing? Or is it what James Porte sounds like when he tried to sing a demo for MJ.
Bobby Ewing A.I model. The "Hot" track has nothing to do with MJ even inside the fake story he and the Cascios cooked up, just reused some melodies from it for "Breaking News" and i guess he thought if he had Jason say Michael Jackson over and over it'd make the songs seem more real! Still devastated we missed out on the god tier line "Mama say michael like a zig zag!", Jason wouldve killed it. Still baffles me not only did James plot the whole thing like some sort of super villain he left an entire paper trail with the Library Of Congress proving the songs were fake and he still got away with it😭

edit: Eddie is on Genius posting the official lyrics for the fake songs and trying to change the credits to say MJ produced and wrote them. Even going as far as to "retcon" adlibs sampled from previous songs to make him say something else lmaooo

How do you know it’s an AI model?

Changing the lyric from "I Am The Loser" to "I Was The Loser" doesn't really make sense to the rest of the lyrics (to me).

I'd like to think that had he gone on to make another album, this would have been left in the vault. It's really not great, regardless of the version. Never took to it.
I like the song but hearing "I was born to lose" always sounds so out of charactere for MJ

Basically half of his adult albums have covers on them. If you count Michael and Xscape, they also each have a cover.
Yes but not exactly, Michael wrote the lyrics to both Behind The Mask and A Place With No Name. He used the instrumental of Behind The Mask which makes it a cover but in the case of A Place With No Name, Michael only sampled the guitar which, to my knowledge, doesn't make it a cover

There seems to be a lack of understanding of what a cover is on this thread so I'll try my best to explain why some of those aren't covers.

Gone Too Soon, Smile, Come Together, It's The Falling In Love, Hot Fun In The Summertime (not on any album obviously) are the only actual covers he has done as an adult to my knowledge. Not sure about Girlfriend since idrk the background on that song, I know Wings did a version but i dont remember the context behind the songs production.

"A Place With No Name" is not a cover it is an interpolation which recreates certain components of a song like a melody or a lyric.
"Behind The Mask" is not a cover it is a sample which is a direct usage of another musical work, typically creatively transformed

Other MJ Songs With Interpolations:
Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'
Work That Body
Dangerous (Demo)

Other MJ Songs With Samples:
Money
History (this has the most)
Another Day
Threatened
Unbreakable
Ghosts
Hollywood Tonight

"Love Never Felt So Good" and "This Is It", "Behind The Mask" are NOT covers as they predate the existence of the versions that had prior releases, they also are licensed completely differently which is why you won't see Johnny Mathis credited on LNFSG. That'd be like calling "She's Trouble" on Thriller 40 a cover because some random mfs dropped their own versions in the 80s. Cover songs don't require permission (if it's released) but they do require what's called a mechanical license (unless alternate deal is arranged) which MJ/estate never did, because they are not covers.

Behind The Mask actually technically is. Using a pre-exisiting instrumental of a song and adding vocals still counts as being a cover by my understanding. Michael also directly asked YMO for permission in 1981 and they are credited as co-writer on the track.

Is there a full list of all Unreleased tracks somewhere?
Every time I think I have them all in my storage there is always something new. I don't have the same time as before to keep track of everything that's leaked. If you know where I can find it so I can compare it to what I have, it would be great! 🤗

That's not a cover, that's a sample. It'd be a cover if he had for example recreated their instrumental and that was it. They are credited as co-writer because MJ used their composition.

A sample is taking an excerpt of a song and adding it to your work, like Good Life, Low or Please Don't Stop the Music

Yeah that is verbatim what he did with BTM tho lol he took the instrumental and added it to his lyrics and his melody. Unless im misunderstanding what you're saying

The song isn't about him
Nearly every line has either "me" or "I" so regardless of whether it's about Buxer or whatever, MJ is singing from his point of view as far as the listener is concerned - so the origin of the track is irrelevant. Thousands of people use "Songbird" as their wedding song every year, not realising the song is about a divorce.

Bubbles is cool. Mighty stupid to add the monkey noises though, no?

Taking a whole instrumental and adding on top of it is still considered a cover since you use all of the existing track and not a small excerpt/sample (like a drum/vocal sample)

That's the MO of that guy unfortunately. Painfully unfunny editing + AI gatekeeping of material.

There are plenty, such as the tracker and the fan Wikia page, but they’re all unreliable in varying ways. I’d say the Wikia page seems to be the most accurate (though please ignore any song listed as “lost,” because none of them are).

Thank you so much! I'll have a deep look into the wikia website. It looks like I'm missing a lot!

again, small question: what parts of the tracker are unreliable so I can fix them?

Well I did say if you count them.
