Did Russel Brand just make an indirect insult towards Michael Jackson at the Brit Awards?

Mmmm. The other celebrities in the crowd didn't laugh and some of them looked quite uncomfortable at his jokes, not only has he made comments about Michael (offensive or not, I don't know) but he did make comments about Amy Winehouse (sp?) saying her name resembles the state of her liver more and more each day AND poke fun at Robbie Williams being in rehab (though I'm not particularly fussed about that).

So, what to make of it. I wonder.

Well we all know what Jarvis Cocker did at the Brit Awards the last time they were broadcast live, right? when he pulled down his pants in front of Michael as he performed Earth Song? Russel basically brought this up tonight and said "thank god Jarvis doesn't know about Michaels over hobbies (pause) those hobbies being looking after little chimps" the pause being an uncomfortable one.

Thats basically it.

It is worth noting that Russel is obviously a Michael Jackson fan as some of his favourite tracks are those by Mr Jackson and he has referred to him as a musical genius only recently.

So, I think it was just for comedy and compared to some comedians it wasn't really that bad. Maybe I'm reading too much into it.
 
To be fair, nobody in the UK likes Jarvis Cocker. He gets more disrespect than Michael in fact.

Russel is doing quite well over here and is without a doubt inspired by the Jacksons, just look at the way he dresses, he even defended Michael on Celebrity Big Brother when one of the z list celebrity guests made fun of him and actually cut him off and didn't allow him to speak again.

The fact that nobody laughed at the event, celebrities didn't look impressed, that can only be seen as a good thing and that Michaels image is being restored. Part of me thinks that Russels comment was genuinely not intended to be offensive, otherwise he would have just come out and said it.

Yep, he's not an MJ hater and as someone pointed out, it was almost certainly scripted. The fact nobody laughed is a clear indication that the Michael jokes are yesterdays news. Just wish ITV would get over the fact they didn't get Michael with that Bashir crap.
