True! But that's what I mean. So many huge artists of the 80s, and MJ sold significantly more than everyone else in the top 5, not to mention the others. Pretty crazy!

I can’t lie prince only had 1 smash album purple rain. He cut the era so short and kept on releasing that he didn’t sell as much as he would have. His other albums in the 80s sold less than 10m.

The thing about mj is he had already knew the industry for 15 years while his age group was still in school. That’s why he was able to smash so hard because not only was he a veteran he was still in his early 20s and at a marketable age. Madonna and prince weren’t established at all when their first albums was released. and as far as I know they didn’t have a Clive Davis or John McClain to groom them for stardom ala Janet and Whitney.

Bruce’s biggest blockbuster in the 80s was born in USA. His other blockbusters was mostly in the 70s. He sold an average of 10m per album in the 80s. Born in the USA sold 29m.

Since posting this about 2 weeks ago, MJ has gained 100k subscribers and +49,109,651 views on youtube. To create a total of 26.1m subscribers & 12,733,105,616 total views on his channel. An amazing growth.

Next milestone - 13billion streams. Depending on the thriller video streams and thriller 40 promotion it could happen this year if he continues the average 24.5m per week in views.

Does anyone know if there is a source for tracking how many albums Michael has sold so far in 2022? I'm very curious about how his numbers fair in terms of real sales vs. streaming. I'm also really curious about the numbers his albums other than Thriller and compilations do. I had the thought that they may be similar to other artists from that time period, however part of me thinks they have to sell more than that too. I don't understand how someone can listen to/love Thriller and not then embrace his entire catalogue lol.

Anyway, this is what I'm thinking about while I'm putting on my makeup, half asleep, before work.

Yeah, Chicago is still mega popular!! I saw a reel on Facebook that was shared from TikTok (God, what a world lol) and it was using Leave Me Alone as the background music, so I'm wondering if that is going to be the next big viral MJ hit? Time will tell.

No, it's all good. Me and OTW had ourselves quite the moment earlier. I listened to it - no idea why, don't ask, lol - and it kinda blew my mind which it has never done before. I always found it irritating and the lyrics REALLY irritate me. Anyway, I listened and heard all that horror - story laughter at the beginning which I swear I've never heard before - this is completely impossible, I've heard the wretched thing a million times, but this is how it felt, what can I say? - and it totally freaked me out.

Why does everyone fling Thriller into the Halloween maelstrom? Why, I ask? Just play the beginning of OTW. Sorted. :D

Anyway, I loved the song but I needed to clear the horror - story bit out of my head. Man, it's ... well, I don't know what it is but it was a moment, that's all I can say.

I'll be revisiting it tomorrow.😱
 
With regards to MJ's RIAA certifications for singles, the MJ estate is still behind. They have started to catch up in the last couple years but there's still WAY more work to do.

As of today MJ has been certified for 68.5 million singles sold in the USA. He is the 22nd most successful artist in this regard, and the top selling musical act of the 20th century.

I have went and done some deep research on what still needs to be certified. There are 9 songs that still need to be certified (Scream, Heal The World, Leave Me Alone, Who Is It, Give Into Me, Jam, Ghosts, Speed Demon, Slave To The Rhythm). All of these songs are currently Platinum or Gold, for a total of 7 million units sold. None have been certified yet.

In addition to the songs listed above, there are another 12 songs that are currently under certified. Some by huge amounts. There are 31 million missing sales from these 12 songs. The top 7 are:

Smooth Criminal (8X Platinum)
They Don't Care About Us (8X Platinum)
Man In The Mirror (5X Platinum)
Love Never Felt So Good (4X Platinum)
Bad (4X Platinum)
The Way You Make Me Feel (4X Platinum)
You Are Not Alone (3X Platinum)

If the estate were to invest the time, they could add an additional 38-39 million single certifications to MJ's total taking him to around 107 million. This would take Michael Jackson from #22 to #9 (ahead of The Weeknd, Post Malone, Bruno Mars, Lil Wayne, Ed Sheeran, Lady Gaga).

To put into perspective, there is not a single act from the 20th century in the Top 25. Singles just didn't sell back then. The fact that MJ is competing and actually beating the majority of modern artists with single sales is simply mouth dropping. Try to encourage the estate to finish his certifications.
