To Catlovers

On June 11, the anniversary of the first No Kill community in the U.S., at least 800 animal welfare organizations, animal control centers, private animal shelters and rescue organizations joined forces to save homeless pets and pledged not to kill any healthy, adoptable animals for Just One Day, the first national day of No Kill in the U.S.

The No Kill Advocacy Center and Animal Ark, who organized the event, estimate that as many as 9,000 animals were saved, but believe that number is conservative.

“We proved that there are enough homes for shelter animals,” said Mike Fry of Animal Ark. “So long as the shelters engage the animal-loving American public in positive and constructive ways, they will swoop in to help the shelters to save lives.”

For the campaign, techs were asked to put down syringes and instead pick up their cameras and hit social media sites with photos to promote animals who needed a forever home. Rescuers marketed to the public, stayed open longer, offered discounted adoption rates and hosted events. The facilities that are usually closed on Mondays stayed open and the response from hundreds of communities nationwide was overwhelming.

“Some shelters literally ran out of animals,” said Nathan Winograd of the No Kill Advocacy Center. “With empty cages all over their shelters, many of them realized they were not going to have to kill any animals on June 12, either. Many decided to continue their events each day for Just One More Day.”

According to an update, B.A.R.C. in Houston saved 231 animals. Miami-Dade Animal Services placed 116 animals and passed a No Kill resolution. In Armarillo, Texas, animal control placed 47 animals by 4:30 and adoptions kept moving too fast for the computer system to keep up. Boone County Animal Shelter in Kentucky saved 57 animals. Roanoke in Virginia reported 36 adoptions by mid-day and a shelter full of potential adopters, while another facility reported staff crying tears of joy.

“In short, it was the single, safest day for homeless animals in shelters this century, with the support, endorsement and embrace of traditional shelters all over the country. And the shelters participating did not shy away from embracing No Kill or the term. It was a watershed moment. Not just because they did so or the animals normally killed in years past were saved, but because of the valuable lessons hundreds of traditional shelters across the country learned,” said Winograd.

“They learned that No Kill is not to be feared. They learned that rescue groups are not to be feared. And they learned that the public is not to be feared. In fact, we are all partners—ready, willing, and able to work together the moment they decide to do so.”

Michael said it starts with us.
It was lucky that those 2 from Ireland was there and took action, the other probably thought someone else can do it.
It´s the same reaction worldwide.
But some care.
Some say we can´t help every cat, I say I can´t help every cat alone but together we can do it one day.

"The kindness you make to one animal doesn´t change the world
But it change the world for that animal"

Atlantic City boardwalk cats thumb noses at Sandy and TNR alarmists

NPR’s Melissa Block broke the news to listeners yesterday as she toured a badly damaged Atlantic City shoreline that her team described as looking like a bombed-out war zone. Amid the storm-battered boardwalk area, like crocuses emerging after a brutal winter, the famous Atlantic City feral cats were returning to their beloved boardwalk homes near the various casinos that dot the waterfront.

Ms. Block interviewed a lifelong resident, 63-year-old Frank Hoops, who had come to the beach area to check on the colony of ferals that he cares for. He was happy to note that they were all just fine. At another location, a casino security guard reported that as the eye of the storm passed over the area, he saw a line of 25 cats walking single file down the boardwalk looking cool, calm and collected. The Atlantic City cats have been a signature project of Alley Cat Allies for 13 years and are a model of trap/neuter/return (TNR) in action and in full public view. TNR is the only humane, not to mention only effective, method of community cat management and has replaced the old, failed catch-and-kill model that is neither humane nor effective.

Oddly, some animal rights advocates, led by PETA, claim that TNR is excessively risky and cruel and places cats who are returned to the location at which they were trapped at risk of injury by cars, dogs, rock-throwing kids and, in the case of the Atlantic City cats, storms.

Well, chalk up another win for the cats, TNR and, in this case, Alley Cat Allies, which not only took on the Atlantic City cats as a model program, but are the folks responsible for establishing best practices for TNR and who continue to be effective advocates for community cats everywhere. To learn more about the Atlantic City cats, visit the Alley Cat Allies Facebook page.

What a sight to see the cats walking..on the line..
It´s really nice to read this blog from Best friend where he write good things about Alley Cat Allies project.
Organisations have to work together to help the cats,it´s not a contest who is best .

A unspayed female cat can have many kittens during her life.
Many of the kittens don´t survive.
Some cats don´t manage to get enough to eat and sometimes the kittens don´t survive birth, sometimes the mothercat is to weak and dies too or she doesn´t have milk or just a little to feed them.
In these cases If the kittens survive birth they don´t get enough nutrition and don´t live long.

Then it depends on the climate, if the mothercat find a warm place if it´s cold.It shouldn´t be to hot either.
Predators..A little kitten can be killed by a rat or a crow

There are kitty mills too

I´ve heard about Savannah cats.
It seems you can make money of them.
Money is important, but not always to take good care of the animals

John Lennon loved cats

"John Lennon was crazy about cats. Over the years, he owned several, plus a few dogs. These are their stories.

Elvis
Growing up, Lennon had a cat named Elvis, who was owned by his beloved mother, Julia. Julia was worshiped by young John, and they were both crazy about Elvis Presley. The Lennons realized they had misnamed Elvis when “he” gave birth to a litter of kittens in the cupboard. But still the name of their favorite singer remained tagged to the new mother.

Tich and Sam
He had two other cats as a boy growing up in Liverpool: Tich and Sam. Tich passed away while Lennon was away at art school (which he attended from 1957 to 1960).

Tim
One day, John Lennon found a stray cat in the snow, which his Aunt Mimi allowed him to keep. (John’s beloved Aunt Mimi raised him from a young boy through his late teenage years.) He named the marmalade-colored half-Persian cat Tim.

Tim remained a special favorite of John. Every day, he would hop on his Raleigh bicycle and ride to Mr. Smith’s, the local fishmonger, where he would buy a few pieces of fish for Tim and his other cats.

As a famous Beatle, traveling all over the world, John would often call and check on how Tim was doing. Tim lived a happy life and survived to celebrate his 20th birthday.

(At left, Aunt Mimi holds Tim.)

Sally
As a teenager, John Lennon had just one dog, named Sally. It was reported that when Sally died, John was inconsolable; a witness said it was “the only time I ever saw John cry.”

Bernard
John later gave his first wife, Cynthia, a dog named Bernard as a gift. Bernard and Sally were to be John’s only two pet dogs.

Mimi and Babaghi
John and Cynthia also had a cat named Mimi who was, of course, named after his Aunt Mimi. They soon got another cat, a tabby, who they dubbed Babaghi. John and Cynthia continued acquiring more cats until they eventually owned around 10 of them.

(At left, Cynthia and John with one of their many cats.)

Jesus
As a Beatle, John had a cat named Jesus. The name may have been (or probably was) John’s sarcastic response to his “the Beatles are bigger than Jesus” controversy of 1966. (Paul McCartney also once owned a cat named Jesus, too.)

Major and Minor
In the mid-1970s, John had an affair with his secretary. One day she brought a box of stray kittens into the recording studio.

“No, no!” John immediately protested, “I know what you’re thinking! We can’t adopt them!” But she had John pick up the kittens, and then he couldn’t resist.

They adopted two of the kittens and named them Major and Minor.

Salt and Pepper
John also had two cats with his later wife, Yoko Ono. One was black, one was white. As befitting John’s offbeat sense of humor, he christened the white cat Pepper and the black one Salt.

(At left, Yoko and John with Salt.)

Alice
John’s Russian Blue cat named Alice, however, was his special favorite.

One day, Alice jumped out of an open window in the Lennons’ high-rise apartment at the Dakota and plunged to her death. Sean Lennon, John’s son, was present at the time of the accident. He remembers it as the only time he ever saw his father cry.

Misha, Sasha, and Charo

In later years, John also owned three cats he named Misha, Sasha, and Charo.

Always an artist at heart, John loved to sketch his many cats. He used some of the cats’ pictures as illustrations in his books.

(At left is one of his cat illustrations from Real Love: The Drawings for Sean.)"

There are other ways than killing.
If we could work together without arguing it would be much better.
I don´t agree with the statement a dead cat don´t suffer.
It seems to be an excuse to kill anyone.

A cat was found.
He was very very skinny and had frostbite inter alia on tail and paws
Veterinarians were surprised how he still could be alive.
He got nutrient drip at the clinic , he was friendly and grateful.
he didn´t want to be alone.
Some cats are survivors and we on the catforum were hoping he would make it.
To tell the truth some thought it was best for the cat to be euthanized at once and some of us didn´t agree
You can see pictures in this thread.

Victor seemed to be better loved food and made friends with the dog but then it turned he became very tired and unresponsive.
It went fast in the end and he died.
But he wasn´t alone when he died there was a person there holding him, loving him.
He got a few days in the end when he was cared for and loved.
He could have been abandoned but it´s possible he was on the run too.

He was social and it was cleared he was loved once and I though a Michael Jackson Quote was fitting

“If you enter this world knowing you are loved and you leave this world knowing the same, then everything that happens in between can be dealt with.”

Some wrote it was nice written and then I saw I hadn´t written it was Michael´s quote.
I was going to tell them but first I wanted to look at a catvideo on youtube.
I save videos in favorites etc but this time it was impossible to come to the videos.
I clicked on my icon as usual but nothing happened, I didn´t come to my channel.
I found another video and I wanted to post it but the embed function didn´t work-although it worked before
The strange thing was that it worked after I went to the catforum and wrote it was a Michael Jackson quote.
I had waited because I wanted to write more about Michael but at the same time I didn´t want to take away the attention from Victor, the cat..

is it worth to rescue cats?
You give your money, your time but does it help?
You put your love to care about a cat but some don´t survive despite all loving care from you-and veterinarians.
Sometimes it breaks your heart, but the reward to see a cat healthy is greater or to see a cat who start to trust you .
It´s great to see a rescued cat indoors sleeping peaceful on the bed without freezing

This is reality for homeless cats and kittens
Now and then in Sweden it happens they shoot cats when the cats get to many, they don´t think about there can be mothers who have little kittens there.

I´m just saying spay and neuter...
