Re: Weekend News Bytes: February 15-17, 2008 (updated for Feb 16)

I have been looking for this clip forever. I was just searching for it on youtube but couldn't remember where I saw it. thanks so much for posting. I just love the way Mike sings that first song, I believe it's a song by the Delfonics. "can you remember when we were b-a-a-bies"--just love the way he sings babies *swoons*. Such a dynamic little vocalist.

Michael Jackson News for Feb 17, 2008:

Chart News:

According to Nielsen SoundScan’s Feb 13 Building chart, which reflects sales through Tuesday in more than 79 percent of the US market, Johnson’s “Sleep’’ stands a good chance to lead the big chart for a second week.
Next week’s chart will also reflect spikes motivated by the Grammy Awards and Valentine’s Day shopping, with Herbie Hancock and Amy Winehouse certain to be among the beneficiaries of the former. Also expect a fast start by Michael Jackson’s “Thriller 25,’’ a reissue of the all-time best-selling studio album, with newly recorded duets of five of the original nine songs.
This week’s lists reflect the benefits of performances at the Super Bowl, including Alicia Keys’ Greatest Gainer trophy on the Billboard 200 (No. 3, up 31 percent) and Jordin Sparks, who sees two titles gain on Hot Digital Songs, with “No Air’’ zipping from No. 31 to No. 22 on a 23 percent increase.

25 years of 'Thriller'
BY MICHAEL J. TRUAX
Cox News Service
Article Last Updated: 02/16/2008 07:28:53 PM CST

Michael Jackson released "Thriller 25" last week, 25 years after the groundbreaking release of "Thriller," the album that helped solidify him as the King of Pop. In addition to the entire original album, "Thriller 25" features collaborations with artists such as Fergie and will.i.am of the Black Eyed Peas and Kanye West. But mostly, it reminds us of how great the original really was. Here are 25 reasons it's still relevant:

5 reasons "Thriller" is still great
1. It's "uncool" which means it's now "cool." Don't ask us why, it's just the way the universe works. 2. You can't dance to "The Joshua Tree" by U2. 3. More than 100 million served. That's how many people have listened to "Billy Jean." 4. Quincy Jones produced it. 5. Seven Top 10 songs.

5 cultural impacts of "Thriller," as seen on YouTube 1. Prisoners in the Philippines doing the "Thriller" dance. 2. Doing the "Thriller" dance at cool/ironic wedding receptions. 3. More than 1,600 people did Thriller at the same time on Oct. 27, 2007. They're already planning for 2008 on www.thrilltheworld.com. 4. The "Indian Thriller" is what you actually look like when you try to do the "Thriller" dance. 5. The SoBe Super Bowl ad, starring Naomi Campbell and featuring animated salamander dancers.

5 reasons we still love "Thriller" 1. The Moonwalk. 2. The Red Leather Jacket. 3. Sleepy graveyards and monster attacks. 4. It won eight Grammys, so it must be good. 5. "Thriller" was the greatest video ever. Still is if you ask us.

Michael Jackson, Pharrell Williams of the Neptunes and Jessica Alba.

Growing up, what did you want to do?

As a child, I wanted to do everything. I wanted to be an actor, a singer, a dancer, a writer and a sketch artist. I wanted to be Michael Jackson, and MC Hammer's "Can't Touch This" was my song. I also wanted to be an educator and leader advocating for improvement in the African-American community. By high school, I considered engineering and biology. When I graduated, I started my first business in the music industry. It was during my last year of high school that I wanted to be in business for myself. I just didn't know what business.

The death of mass culture

The music industry has become obsessed with people stealing their products electronically, but the real problem is a lack of compelling talent. We lack major figures such as Michael Jackson, Elvis Presley and the Beatles. Each redefined pop music and drew vast audiences that crossed generations. Literally no one is doing that now. Few new singers today even have a hope of cracking music's second tier.

Bad video, a brilliant gangster/horror short

Bad was a horror short? Since when? lol. Unless you want to talk about how horrific it was that Wesely and his crew ditched Michael at the end. That WAS horrible, lol.

This is so true! I've been saying this for so long now!

There really aren't any true original artists out there. The music industry is soo boring these days.

also speaking of people stealing their music electronically someone just put Michael's entire Thriller 25 album for download on youtube egh
