Can we get Sony to tell us the current sales-figure of all Michael Jacksons albums, from Off The Wall to Invincible? Then how?

Sony has to get the RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) to update the totals for new certifications. There's a fee for this. The certifications determine whether the cd is gold (500,000 copies), platinum (1 million copies), multi-platinum (1 million +) or diamond.(10 million). Why should we care about the accounting? That's Sony's and Jackson's business.

I care because this so called RIAA certification is the "official" number of records sold. example Thriller has sold 54x platinum in the US/ 104 World; yet the "certification still says 27x platinum US (this is behind the Eagles) and is is a lie Thriller has always been ahead of the Eagles supposed 29xplatinum in sales. Bad (possibly 15-20 million US/ 50 million World) also needs a serious audit.

The whole World must know (with out a dought) Mikes REAL sales!

I agree. The problem I have with people doubting the sales of Thriller is that there are many people involved with it that must be payed, including MJ. If it were announced that thriller sold so much, these people will be knocking on Sony's door for their money, so it would be wreckless of MJ or Sonly to pump up the sales cause it would cost them money to song writers and producers and the like. So it would not be in MJ's interest to bump up sales artificially. Sony would put a stop to that too and they haven't.

i ead somewhere that it costs a couple of hundred dollars, my question is can any random person pay to update it?

what were the figures? I'm interested lol:cool:

here you go. but no one on the otherboards believes it. as u can see from the figures that are given it sounds like B.S to me.

This week Thriller 25th will be released. With the upcoming 50th anniversary of the Grammy Awards and a special edition of the best selling album of all time, SonyBMG and the IFPI are recertifying the list of best selling albums ever. Everyone knows that since 1982 the album "Thriller" is the biggest selling album in the USA and worldwide with now more than 104 million copies sold. The sales soon will pass the 105th million mark. It's the only album sold more than 100+ worldwide. Insiders of SonyBMG are expecting to sell millions of the new deluxe set worldwide.

But there is more good news for the fans: IFPI will certify Michael Jackson he owns the 5 best albums ever sold in music history. The list:

1. Thriller (105 million)
2. Dangerous (54 million)
3. BAD (53 million)
4. Off The Wall (51 million)
5. HIStory (50 million)

6. The Bodyguard (43 million)

Worldwide Michael Jackson will come close to 1.000.000.000 albums, singles sold including Jackson 5 and The Jacksons. Elvis is 2nd with over 600 million albums sold and Beatles are 3rd with just over
500 million albums sold. Invincible has now sold over 10 million copies.

^ yep, that's bullshit

this guy, MJJnews777 has gone mad

I suppose some of those figures could be possible, but yeah he sounds like he is in la la land

is the guy credible at all ?

is the guy credible at all ?

hes been called credible by others who are repsected. hes a fan that works around/ in the industry so he gets to hear things. whether those things are credible is another issue. its not like hes in mjs camp.hes just hears things cause of the work hes in

History 50 million ?? - I've heard something like 18, which is amaxing fo a double album. - maybe 50 is really 25, so 50 million cd. But anyway sounds like BS.

OTW - 51 million is absolutely not true. Not even 25 million.

I don't believe it till I see it official.

well yeap. if they post something i read it but i dont dwell on it. if it were true we would hear sooner or later so if u havnt heard anything in 6 months u know it was B.s lol.after all mj would be owed well over $100 mill

The figures sound very credible to me. In fact I have been thinking this before this figure came out. When fans buy MJ albums they usually buy the whole lot. I bought ALL of MJ's albums when I became a fan.I have never done that with any other celebs albums. Yes, I believe this figure is reachable, and I believe it will be announced. Don't forget people that others will have to be paid when thse figures are announced so it is not in Sony's interest to inflate the sales cause it will cost them dearly.

^^ But wouldn't Michael be paid as well? If Sony has to payout other people will that hurt MJ or will it just hurt Sony?

Yes, MJ would have to be paid as well. This is why I believe the figures put out by MJ's people because Sony woud not allow figures out there that he would need to account for if those figures were incorrect.

yeah, i'm getting a bit sick of all these magazines saying that thriller is now the second best selling album behind the eagles, when we dont know that for sure (even though i dont know WHY they would base that on U.S. sales and not worldwide sales  )

The truth is Sony didn't pay RIAA for getting MJ albums updated since ages.

REMINDER : ALL music distributors/majors have to pay RIAA and/or all other foreign music associations to get certifications.

Sony BMG had a big feud with Michael Jackson that wasn't reported in any news (except Invincible promo and Sony/Atv catalogue). As a matter of fact, Jermaine jackson confirmed in CNN's Larry King Live show that Sony Music didn't pay Michael's royalties of CBS still selling albums (Thriller, Bad and Dangerous). Sony Music (including Epic, Columbia, Legacy etc.) is the record company with the most royalty lawsuits in the world.

Sony would update its datas in a near futur? I don't think so, at least not that soon.

"Sony BMG and Michael Jackson" is a very specific relationship in the Music Industry, both share the 2nd world's largest music publishing company. But it's about time Michael will show us his figures with details, he knows how much his albums has sold.

I agree with you. There is something devilsh going on there. So MJ is the biggest selling artist, he should not ever be short of cash, or you need to ask yourself how on earth other lesser artist survive.

Now did I hear you say that Sony/Atv is the second biggest catalogue in the world:eek:

I believe those figures shown could include all unit sales of the album. Meaning of course when it says Dangerous= 54 million that means not only sales of the Dangerous Album but also worldwide sales of all singles released from the Dangerous album. When they say Thriller has sold 105 million; that figure is based on album sales, Thriller single sales, Thriller music video sales, and any other release that is tied to Thriller. It represents units, not albums. In reality Thriller has only sold about 60 million ALBUMS but when all other attached units are added in the figure balloons to 100 million+

The figure of 750 million units we always here about is all of MJ's solo work+ The Jackson 5, The Jacksons, Worldwide single sales, DVD/VHS Sales, etc.

Trackable sales of all Michael's solo records from all lables are about 350 million; group records sales from all labels are about 150 million.

Niether 750 million, nor 1 billion is trackable. Sony-BMG ME (Music Entertainment)/Epic Records/Legacy Records are not obliged to publish any figures and rarely does so. 1 billion figure of total sales just cannot be pulled from anywhere.

Also; actually major labels do not necessary have to pay specifically for certifications. They already pay significant yearly payments as founding members of RIAA. Only Universal Music Group pays more to RIAA than Sony-BMG ME.

Probable lack of fresh certifications can be more connected with Sony-BMG ME just not providing RIAA with updated figures of sales. However, other complications, of course, possible.

Also, as of now there is no accounting dispute between ER/LR/Sony-BMG ME and Jackson; everything was either settled or dismissed. Beyond that, we have newly produced product such as "Thriller 25" as Michael's confidence that he will be receiving his royalties.

I co-sign!!!

sometimes we need to know were the line is.. when it comes to Michael ...

that soon.

. But it's about time Michael will show us his figures with details, he knows how much his albums has sold.

exactly.. and when Mike does tell us what he knows about his album sales ( 104 mil sold of Thriller for example)... many doubt it...

the man knows

I've allways been thinking that somehow mike get's ripped of by someone. Example, whenever someone discuss album sales of for instance dangerous, the sales figure is the same as when the album came out or 2 years later. I keep thinking.. dangerous or any other of his albums haven't sold anything in like 15 - 20 years??

we want the real numbers sony!!
