Go see any impersonator show (there are dozens to choose from). Guess which performers get the biggest howls from the audience: Madonna, Prince and Michael Jackson. And I know this will just sound like bashing, but Madonna's impersonator was more attractive and sounded better than the real thing -- at least her British accent sounded real.

The final act,
The Slap Happies came on and I was jamming to Michael Jackson, Harvey Danger and No Doubt covers. I wasn't the only ones getting my boogie on, I saw many in the crowd break out in spontaneous dances.

'Thriller' Video Stars You!

Story Created: Apr 11, 2008 at 1:20 PM EDT

PASADENA, Calif. -- For the first time ever and through the magic of technology, anyone can now star in the greatest music video of all time -- Michael Jackson's Thriller -- as part of the album's worldwide 25th anniversary celebration!

Michael Jackson and Epic/Legacy Recordings (Sony BMG) have partnered with innovative media company Big Stage and YouTube to bring this landmark entertainment experience to the world. Central to the tribute is the ability for fans to easily create a life-like 3-D version of themselves that literally replaces the role of Michael Jackson in the music video. This cutting edge technology was developed by Big Stage.

"This is a great tribute to Michael Jackson, involving one of the greatest and most innovative music videos of all time," said Jonathan Strietzel, co-founder and chief creative officer, Big Stage. "We're excited about working with Epic/Legacy Recordings to demonstrate the first public Big Stage experience -- inserting a photo-realistic avatar of 'you' into digital content. This is just a taste of the way consumers will be able to personalize everything from famous movie scenes to video games, virtual worlds and social networking sites, when we officially launch next quarter."

"Michael Jackson is an innovator and a pioneer in the music industry and so it only makes sense, as part of our anniversary celebrations for Thriller, to give fans worldwide a new way to experience the video in a way not even Michael could have imagined 25 years ago," said J.J. Rosen, Executive Vice-President, SonyBMG Commercial Music Group. "Our partnership with Big Stage, is an amazing way to fundamentally change people's interaction with content."

Once users have uploaded their photos to create their personalized Thriller video, they will be sent a link to a YouTube page where the video will be posted. From there, it can be shared with friends by email and posted on social networking sites like MySpace or Facebook.

This whole "put yourself in the Thriller video" is a GREAT idea. I mean, this is something that can be enjoyed by the WHOLE family.

In my opinion, MJ DID IT AGAIN! This is a brand new way to enjoy a music video. I am totally in love with this idea.

Michael Jackson's 'Thriller' Video Stars You as Part of the 25th Anniversary Celebration

PASADENA, Calif., April 11 --

For the first time ever and through the magic of technology, anyone can now star in the greatest music video of all time -- Michael Jackson's Thriller -- as part of the album's worldwide 25th anniversary celebration! The campaign begins today at www.MichaelJackson.com/mythrillervideo.

Once users have uploaded their photos to create their personalized Thriller video, they will be sent a link to a YouTube page where the video will be posted. From there, it can be shared with friends by email and posted on social networking sites like MySpace or Facebook. A recent fan generated video reached the Top 25 viewed Entertainment videos on YouTube, and most recently, MTV caught wind of the My Thriller Video tool, and produced a piece with their talent showcasing the process for MTV.com NewsBlog.
The Michael Jackson Thriller 25th anniversary celebration kicked off in December 2007 with the release of a new single and continues throughout 2008 with a multi-faceted global marketing campaign featuring high-profile television, radio and online events around the world. The Big Stage-enabled Thriller video piece is part of Epic/Legacy Recordings' viral campaign in support of the album's 25th anniversary release on February 12, of which the first single was "Wanna Be Startin' Something 2008," a duet between Michael Jackson and Akon. The album has already sold 2 million copies worldwide.

PASADENA, Calif., April 11 --

With Big Stage's 3-D capture technology, users will take three simple pictures of themselves with a digital camera and upload them to the Web, where they will be quickly converted into a life-like 3-D avatar called an @ctor(TM). Big Stage's proprietary technology will automatically map the contours of a user's face to generate an incredibly accurate replica of the user, fully equipped for animation. In under a minute, your @ctor will be born and fully alive through realistic movement and gestures. Users can then style it with a host of accessories, from hair to eyeglasses, tattoos, hats and more.

After users create and style their @ctors, they can drop them into the library of Big Stage-enabled user and professionally created content or Scenes. These highly personalized Scenes can then be shared by users across everything from famous movie scenes, TV shows and video games, to music videos, short video clips, virtual worlds, still images, user-generated content, instant messages, e-mails, social networks and more -- instantly. Big Stage will officially launch to consumers in the second quarter of 2008.

Granted, many could label my tastes snobbery in terms of film and music, though I must emphasize that the 'pop' genre isn't a favorite of mine, and is one that finds itself in the midst of perhaps its darkest days (when the '80s overshadow you, you're low).

No offense to them, but artists like Rihanna, Jesse McCartney, Britney Spears, Panic at the Disco and Natasha Bedingfield simply don't interest me (maybe because I don't even know who half of them are, but that might be my own fault). It does sadden me that pop music in the United States carries a stigma that the genre only generates low-quality content.

For many that might be true, but don't you remember when pop was cool and even respected? Who are the biggest pop stars of all time? The Beatles, you say? They're not bad! Even less than twenty years ago, before the young man purchased his ticket straight to Mars, Michael Jackson challenged the Fab Four for global pop domination. But where does our generation see itself? Surely, we can't equate ourselves to the pop legends of yore. Must we debate whether the Backstreet Boys or N'Sync are our Beatles equivalent? No!

You recently appeared on ITV's Guilty Pleasures, covering Michael Jackson's Beat It. I thought it was a good performance on an otherwise iffy show.

You just don't know at the time. When we heard about it, we knew the Magic Numbers would be there, and Sophie Ellis Bextor, and obviously a few real mainstreamers. I thought it could be quite a laugh. But although it didn't make for riveting viewing, I actually really enjoyed it. Basically, it was like walking into a pub full of old folks and screaming really loudly. We woke everything up a bit, I think.

Ten minutes in to the first edition of ITV1’s Britain’s Got Talent in June last year, a bloke walked on to the audition stage with a monkey puppet. “We were thinking, these auditions aren’t great,” says Simon Cowell of a judging panel that also includes Piers Morgan and Amanda Holden. “And then this guy walks out, and I thought, ‘Oh God, another ventiloquist’ – but he was brilliant.” As the puppet mimed to Michael Jackson songs, the studio audience roared their approval and the talent contest turned into an instant hit. Its live final peaked at more than 12 million viewers.

Re: April 11, 2008 MJ News & Mentionings

I was amazingly impressed with the way that either Sony/Epic or Michael handled the "Star in Thriller" idea. Most people just do something like OfficeMax's ElfYourself (now defunct) which just slaps your face on a character and doesn't have it move at all (maybe your mouth moves like a wooden puppet's mouth would, but that's it.)

elfyourself.jpg

They totally evolved from that idea and it's a masterpiece.

Although it takes about 3 days or whatever for it to be made, (unlike things like ElfYourself that take about 5 minutes) it's worth it and the product is amazing.

Was the story about RailAmerica helping Michael Jackson pay off the mortgage debt ever turned out to be true?

Federal board demands railroad explain its actions

ByWinston Ross
The Register-Guard

Published: April 12, 2008 12:00AM

COQUILLE — Federal railroad officials have issued a stern edict to the owner of a short line between Coquille and Eugene: By this time next month, Florida-based RailAmerica must prove that it didn’t unlawfully abandon the critical route.
The edict represents the first time a government agency has forced Central Oregon and Pacific Railroad to explain itself, and it could be a harbinger of the next step — a mandate to abandon the railroad altogether or to repair the aging tunnels that prompted the shutdown and reopen the line.
The Surface Transportation Board issued its order Thursday, asking tough questions about the railroad company’s claims when it closed the line six months ago and about its appeals for public funding since then.
The decision came as welcome news to lawmakers and advocates for the four major industrial companies on the south coast that have been moving products by truck or barge since the September shutdown. The added costs are estimated between $3 million and $4 million this year, said Bob Ragon, executive director of the Douglas Timber Operators, which is representing the affected lumber mills and steel company.
“This is very positive news,” Ragon said. “It looks like the STB is finally going to take some action.”
When CORP closed the line in September,it did so under federal rules that allow for an “embargo,” which is supposed to be a temporary emergency stoppage.
Embargoes often follow landslides or earthquakes that damage train tracks. But from the day the company announced its decision — with 24 hours notice to the affected shippers and government agencies — lawmakers and business representatives have voiced suspicions about RailAmerica’s stated reasons for the closure.
In its initial news release, the Bacon Raton company said the Coos Bay line “just doesn’t have enough business on it to justify us making the repairs,” but added that the line could be reopened if a shipping container terminal could be built.
In the weeks that followed, the company revealed that it had known about unsafe tunnel conditions cited as the reasons for the shutdown for at least a year, which led critics to question the company’s “emergency” declaration.
To them, RailAmerica’s decision sounded less like an embargo and more like a complete abandonment of the line. But abandonment requires more notice, government approval and spending money to remove the line’s infrastructure, state Sen. Joanne Verger said.
“Abandonment means they have the responsibility for paying for all the dismantling of those bridges and everything that has to do with that line,” Verger said.
Since the shutdown, Verger and other lawmakers have been pressing the company to justify its embargo and to set a date for repairing and reopening the line. Instead, RailAmerica has asked for a taxpayer bailout, not only for the $2.9 million needed for tunnel repairs but also for another $20 million in improvements to the three tunnels.
The company sought $4.66 million from each of four entities: the state of Oregon, the Oregon International Port of Coos Bay, a consortium of shippers on the line, and Union Pacific Railroad Co., CORP’s connecting rail carrier.
Led by Gov. Ted Kulongoski, the groups balked at the proposal, insisting that RailAmerica fix the tunnels with its own money and reopen the line. The two sides remain at a standstill.
The Surface Transportation Board’s notice recounts the six-month saga with a few pointed observations.
RailAmerica “has continued to indicate that it will not repair the three tunnels that precipitated the shutdown until it has secured funding for the additional work,” the order says.
Federal law requires rail carriers to provide service upon reasonable request, allowing for temporary suspensions if the carrier is incapable of providing service due to weather or flood damage, tunnel deterioration or operating restrictions caused by traffic congestion.
“But a carrier is not given a free pass to choose not to serve just because of circumstances that make it difficult or expensive to provide service,” the order says.
Even if the embargo were lawful or justified at the time it was issued, the law that allows a shutdown also requires rail companies to reopen embargoed lines in a timely fashion or abandon them.
RailAmerica’s actions “suggest that CORP’s embargo of the line, although it may have been reasonable when imposed, may have gone on for so long that it may have become an unlawful abandonment,” the board said.
The tough talk was lauded Friday by Kulongoski and by Rep. Peter DeFazio, who have been pressuring the transportation board and RailAmerica for a speedy solution to the problem.
“The STB’s decision supports what I’ve told RailAmerica,” the governor said in a news release. “Fix the railroad and get freight moving.”
DeFazio pointed out that the company recently entered into an agreement with pop singer Michael Jackson that will help him come up with the $24.5 million he needed to keep the Neverland Ranch in California from going to auction last month.
“If they can afford $24 million for Neverland, they can afford $20 million to fix their tunnels and put this critical public asset back on line,” DeFazio said.
RailAmerica officials did not return phone calls seeking comment Friday.

http://www.theage.com.au/news/music...nt-in-their-50s/2008/04/10/1207420591539.html

Fabulous or fading?

Three of pop's biggest icons will reach the half-century milestone this year. But in a youth-obsessed music market and with worthy successors nipping at their heels, will Madonna, Prince and Michael Jackson stay relevant? Guy Blackman assesses their futures.
Madonna's 50th birthday on August 16 this year is big, big news. So big, in fact, that you can download a virtual clock that counts down to the moment Madonna Louise Ciccone Ritchie reaches her half century. From trashy gossip magazines to esteemed cultural institutions, the queen of pop's entrance into middle age is being chewed over, processed and then dissected again.
But Madonna is not the only pop megastar turning 50 this year. Within the space of a couple of months, she, Michael Jackson and Prince - that is, three of modern music's most influential figures - will all make the same transition, farewelling their last traces of youth and becoming officially old.
Though their styles and personalities differ, each is facing the same hurdle: how to continue a musical career in a youth-dominated market.
What's happening to Madonna, Jackson and Prince is part of a larger phenomenon. Their landmark birthdays effectively usher in a new generational shift, marking the passing of '80s pop music into the "classic oldies" terrain now occupied by swinging '60s hits and '70s FM rock. Pop music is ageing, gradually but inevitably, and soon youth-targeted radio playlists will concentrate squarely on "the '90s, the noughties and today!"
What will the future hold for this greying but iconic trio in 2008 and beyond - more glittering stardom or merely musical superannuation?

For at least one of his fans, Prince outstripped his contemporaries decades ago. "I was a massive Michael Jackson fan as a kid," says Joe Peruzzi, the 28-year-old moderator of Australia's only online Prince fan forum, Facedownunder. "But one day my sister came into my room and said, 'What the hell is this you're listening to? You should listen to Prince!' So the Michael posters came down, and up went the Prince ones."
Through his forum, Peruzzi has met fans who are far more obsessive than he, with love-symbol tattoos and houses bedecked in purple. But still, his passion for the small, hairy genius runs deep.
"It's all about the music for Prince," Peruzzi says. "With Michael Jackson and Madonna, it's all about the image or the video clips. When you watch Prince live, it's just flawless, but you know it's not overly rehearsed, like a Madonna concert. Michael Jackson will come on, do Billie Jean, do a moonwalk and leave. With Prince, it's always something different: never the same set list, never the same show."

Fabulous or Fading Continued:

MICHAEL JACKSON
With his birthday on August 29, Jackson is the baby of the three, despite his career beginning a good decade earlier than either of his contemporaries. And for all the pubic-relations disasters that have befallen Jackson in recent years, from child abuse allegations to entering the ladies' toilets in a Dubai shopping centre, his musical influence remains all-pervasive and inescapable.
Modern pop music's biggest names, from Timberlake to Chris Brown to Beyonce and beyond, invariably cite Jackson as their prime inspiration. They may not want to discuss the fact, but they can't deny it, either. It has to be said: Jackson outstrips both Madonna and Prince as pop music's biggest innovator.
"There's no comparison," agrees Michael Downs, who ran Jackson's now disbanded Australian fan club. "Prince always wanted to be Michael Jackson and never quite got there. And Madonna is great, but she's so hit and miss. She just has crap, crap, crap, then a hit song, and then more crap."
The repackaged Thriller 25, released in February to commemorate the classic album's 25th anniversary, certainly did not perform like the work of a musical pariah. In both the US and Australia, it sold better than any record except Jack Johnson's in the week of its release, and remained on the ARIA charts at No. 2 for a month, going gold in the process.
Whether a new Michael album will perform as well is another matter. Jackson has been threatening to release an album provisionally entitled 7even since 2006, but nothing has emerged, which frustrates even his most loyal fans. "Michael promises so much, but fails to deliver so often," laments Downs.
Now scheduled for a 2008 release, the album sees Jackson working with the likes of Kanye West and the Black Eyed Peas' will.i.am, who has described it as an Off the Wall for today's generation.
But who is left to buy it? "Back in the early '90s all my friends were like, 'Cool, you're a Michael Jackson fan'," recalls Downs. "Now it's like, 'You're kidding, aren't you?', like you've told them a joke and they're waiting for the punchline."
Jackson's odd behaviour and his Neverland Ranch indiscretions have definitely decimated his 21st-century fanbase. Although memories of earlier triumphs remain powerful, he will mostly likely never overcome his ***** reputation, and, as he heads into his '50s, may well retreat into injured silence, or continue to rework his back catalogue in favour of new material.
