Prince on MJ

I don't get this ihateprineihateprince shizzle that comes from a lot of MJ fans (I'm not talking about anyone in particular here), and the ihatemjihatemj that comes from Prince fans. I used to be a member of prince.org and it was bloody horrible being an MJ fan on there.

Probably due to that media created rivalry. It happens with every fanbase of other artists. I have been through a lot of fan wars. I love Michael Jackson and Prince, they both are awesome to me!

ITA. Look at the Madonna/MJ rivalry created by the fans. I heard her fans do the same thing to Michael on their message boards.

I have enough love and respect for all 3 of them in their respective careers. But Michael will forever by #1 to me!

a rough translation

After two concerts at the Grand Palais on Sunday, October 11 at Paris, Prince said he fell asleep at dawn after he watched the DVD of French Kiss, a romantic comedy starring Meg Ryan and Kevin Kline (1995). Monday, October 12th, around 13 h 30, the singer, guitarist and producer, 51 years, still receives the press in the Chinese Room of the Hotel Costes in the 1st arrondissement of Paris. Andalusian black hat and sunglasses mask his face, wearing a purple coat , the stylized star walks leaning on a silver cane (it seems he suffers from a hip problem, limp noticed by many spectators at the concerts at the Grand Palais). Before the small press conference, Prince gives "Le Monde" twenty minutes of one of his rare interviews, provided we did not record it but only take notes. He is constantly smiling and very cool.

Have you enjoyed your concert at the Grand Palais?

I had even more fun at the second concert. I attended the Chanel fashion show (Tuesday, October 6), I noticed that the applause and the vibrations of sound seemed to rise along the canopy and descend on you. I started to imagine what would it be like to give a concert at this place. Lily Allen played at the Chanel fashion show. I told myself that if Lily Allen can give a concert, why not me?

For several years, you've cultivated the art of surprise concerts in exceptional locations...

I now prefer this format above the traditional tour, it tempts me more. I like being the first and the last to do something. When I played in London in 2007, the O ² Arena, I asked the producers what had been the record number of shows played consecutely in their venue. They said six. I said that I wanted to do twenty-one. During two weeks they refused me, nobody had ever played for so long. All concerts were nevertheless sold out. Since then, Michael Jackson showed me that I should go farther (Michael Jackson had planned to fifty concerts in this venue for what should be his big comeback).

Do you have a special relationship with the city of Paris?

I have long had a flat at Avenue Foch, but too many fans came in the middle of the night singing songs that I don't even play anymore. Paris is a very erotic city, it's exciting what's happening in the streets . There is always something to watch. Some monuments, the Eiffel Tower or the obelisk of the Concorde, are very clear symbols of love (laughs). For me, Paris is also a city of art, a symbol against tyranny.

You give concerts whenever and wherever you like, you publish the recordings at your convenience through multinational, independent labels, via mail order or download. One has the impression that you've never been as free as a performer and studio artist. When did you obtain this freedom?

This freedom has always been there artistically. In my case, for example, when I started dressing extravagant in order not to be labeled because of my clothes. In any way, I used my skin more often than real clothes. On other hand, I had to battle for my economic freedom against the record companies.

At the time of Purple Rain, we got 1 million dollars for the videos, promotion, packaging, manufacturing ... At the end, the record company said the owned the album. For years, artists have been ripped off. No wonder so many have ended pennyless. We must surrender our rights to people who have nothing to do with the creative process. Do you think it's the CEO of a label that inspired Jimi Hendrix?

Can we compare this approach to a political process?

In the U.S., the media are controlled by the state. You can not put the state in question. That is why there was more political music at the time of Woodstock and the heydays of soul music which was born with the civil rights movement. I would have loved to be living at that time. I wasn't so lucky, but my albums have often been controversial, particularly in my approach to sexuality.

If artists earn their freedom, then we'll get a new golden age of soul music. Some industry people and journalists have been campaigning against me, accusing me of being a rebel for purely egotistical reasons, while the challenge is much greater. They also said I was trying to get away from the mainstream, while I'm in the middle of it. Look, my concert tickets are never sold out so quickly.

This freedom does have a price?

If I am for freedom in all things, we must also know not to go too far. That's why I belong to Jehovah's Witnesses. They help me balance my life ,give me a purpose in life and offer me a worldview.

At your concert at the Grand Palais, you've performed a song the Jackson 5 Shake Your Body (Down To The Ground). Was it a tribute?

My singer Elisa has the same timbre as Michael when he was young. And a good song is a good song.

How did you feel at the death of Michael Jackson?

(Prince, obviously reluctant, does not want to dwell on the subject.) It is always sad to lose someone you loved.

Interview conducted by Stéphane Davet

Well, I don't care how long it took Prince to say something, he eventually did and it was a nice thing to say....'cause lets face it, he still did'nt have to say nada!

I remember when Prince was on a radio show and the asked him to say the 1st thing that comes to his mind when they mention a celeb.
the host said Michael Jackson..... Prince replied "genius"
host then said JancetJackson ...Price said "sister of a genius"

Amazing how Prince does it. He doesn't have to say shit, and I never expected him to. But he can just say the smallest thing. The shortest phrase. And it seems to have the biggest impact. To me, it only means that much more.

I love Prince! And he was on point.

I agree. I like Prince.

I have heard some things about the controversy he caused! I still respect him as an artist though and really love his music.

I agree. It's petty on both ends, but I used to post on prince.org a lot too and it was indeed terrible being an MJ fan over there. I still post there from time to time, but as much as I love Prince some of the people over there are so nasty about Michael. I just had enough of it especially since MJ passed, my emotions are running high all the time and I am really not in the mood for all the ignorance and hate.

Either way both Prince & Michael enjoyed eachothers music and respected one another. I never bought into the whole rivalry thing. If anything they had a friendly rivalry growing on, but for sure they respected eachother. It's mostly the media and fans of both of them that like to start up drama and feed into this supposed feud.

Wow! Great thread! I didn't know anything about Prince except a few songs. Shame on me...

If my every word could be twisted, dissected, and taken out of context by the media, I would be a very private person as well.

I would do the same. I totally understand both Michael and Prince.

To lose someone you loved.......

Prince bit late for the emotion don't you think considering you fobbed him off for like 20 years

Wow.

Some people aren't publicly demonstrative and are uncomfortable with expressing emotions.

I think it was a lovely thing to express and it increased my respect for Prince.

I remember this on the Doug Banks show.:D

Did you hear him saying that?

Because I don't believe it...I think that's a myth just like that story about Prince calling Bad "Pathetic".

There's some bootleg concert footage from the early 1990s of Prince performing a little bit of "What Have You Done For Me Lately".

Yes, Prince did say that, I remember watching it. I think the clip of it was even posted on the board (pretty sure it was still MJJF then). Can't remember which program it was on, but it definitely happened.

Are you sure the video you are talking about isn't the one in which he says "Michael's a lover not a fighter." and that "we should build a home for him".

I'm not discrediting you (BTW, thanks for sharing the info =P): I just don't think Prince would say such thing about a rival.

No, 2 separate interviews. I remember it being discussed on the board when it happened, trying to find it now. It was much more recent than the one where Prince says Michael's a lover not a fighter.

=P Really?
I used to think Prince would never say such thing due to his "rivalry" with Mike. When did it happen? Is it true that Mike met P in '94, in MJ's studio?

I remember this on the Doug Banks show.:D

Lol007. . . Terrell said that quote came from this ^^ radio show.

I think the 80s rivalry was all PR and hype blown out of proportion. Yes, they were musical rivals but I really don't think they hated each other. I think they had a cheeky friendship and would use each other as inspiration to push each other to work harder. Hence, all the teasing from Prince on Michael. But the respect was there for each other because they are both true musicians and innovators.

Madonna was Michael's peer, also, but he considered Prince his true musical competition. I think that's why he said that he needed to be receptive to God because otherwise he would give his ideas to Prince! LOL! I mean, that is just really funny.

Besides, if Michael didn't like Prince and vice versa, why did they try to meet up a couple of times to try to work together (86 and 94, maybe more, who knows)? The only reason I think it didn't work out is because they are both so controlling in the studio and want things done their way. But never say never. . . we don't know what's hidden in MJ's vaults or Prince's vaults for that matter.

Anyways, just my opinion. :)

When did it happen? Is it true that Mike met P in '94, in MJ's studio?

Sound engineers that worked with Michael for the History album confirmed that on Mike's Gearslutz thread.

Really? Is this a different concert from the one in 2007 where Will.I.Am performed?
It must be different, because it was before the trial and it was around the time Musicology was out. There was no will.i.am. Prince even has a DVD of one of the shows called "Live At The Aladdin".

Thanks for the info. :)

See, there is definitely more there than meets the eye btw these two.

I think Michael met Will after the trial when he tapped him to start working on some new stuff and on Thriller 25. Then Will said that he invited Michael to come see him perform with Prince in Vegas in 2007 and Michael said yes.

Also, DJ Rashida (Prince's concert DJ) said on a BET special that she was so excited when Michael came to one of Prince's concert because she got to meet him and she had always been a big fan. She said that Michael shook everybody's hand backstage and was just the nicest person. I wonder if this is the 2004 or 2007 concert.

I love Prince, so it's nice to hear from him. Not as much fan as I am of Michael and Elvis, but a fan nevertheless.

Prince and Michael sure were "business rivals", let's say, because both had taste in common for music, but different points of view and way of making their own music. I hope you understand what I'm saying. But never in personal. They were friends. And they had respect for each other, above everything.

I read on the 'Kenny Ortega tweeted' thread that Michael told Kenny Ortega during the TII rehearsals that he admired Prince, loves his music, and that he especially likes Purple Rain.

Yes, I remember that too. I saw it online one time at a metal forum actually. Link is now dead.

I read many articles and books, and it always seemed like both were not too fond of each other. Competiveness I guess. And of course Prince won't say anything negative about Michael now since he's gone. That would be classless.
