I'm wondering what you all think of the album "Bad". Personally I've always enjoyed it more than Thriller, but so many people hail Thriller as pop perfection. Certain songs like baby be mine, PYT and the girl is mine never really screamed "perfection" to me. I'm not saying those tracks aren't good but I always skip them when I listen to that LP. I can listen to Bad from beginning to end and love the entire thing from start to finish. It may just be my personal preference, but I think its his best album.

However I also have to look at its criticisms. I heard when MJ created an album he would take the previous album "formula" and expand it to something new. From Thriller to Bad it seems like he just made everything more funky, so many feel that the album wasn't an artistic triumph like its predecessor. Do you all think Bad is underrated or just flawed?

The BAD album sold over 30 million copies worldwide, eight million units in the United States alone
It has been cited as one of the best selling albums of all time. Bad is the only album to have FIVE
Number #One singles chart on the Billboard Hot 100 at a time when people had to actually go out
and physically buy it (unless Katey Perry has tied that record yet )

I dont think it is under rated. And I dont see anything flawed about it either.

Personally I like it much better than Thriller. Like you I like EVERY Song on it
but that doesnt mean it is better. Music is subjective to the listener much like art
is to the eye of the beholder

Bad and Thriller are equally good, in my opinion. I find that when I want to listen to an entire early MJ album, I pick Thriller over Bad. I don't know what it is, but Thriller seems like an "album," like it's meant to be listened to in its entirety. Bad, on the other hand, feels like a collection of number one hits (which it almost is, since so many songs were number ones). I like to put songs from Bad into a play-list with other songs, rather than listen to the album straight-through.

Bad and Thriller are the most talked MJ albums in music, they get the highest praises. Where as Invincible, HIStory and Dangerous. Get hardly any.

I'd say that Off the Wall and Thriller gets the most praise

When Bad was released MJ already owned the world.
So it's human nature what the media and the critics did, they tried to knock him down.

Especially an album containing songs written solely by Mike with exception of 2: Just Good Friends and Man in the mirror.

I like Bad, however I lke it least of his albums. It is a very visual album that is so tightly connected to its videos. It's hard for me to imagine it as a separate entity, though I can do this with his other albums. That is what kind of weakens this one for me. If I don't have the videos playing to accompany the album, then sometimes I don't enjoy the songs as much.

However, other times, I think it is the greatest. So, what do I know? :D

It was Bad which made me a fan at 11 and I LOVE it. It may be a "visual album" but it was strong enough to make an MJ fan for life when I first HEARD it on a cassette player.

Well the Bad era was one of the best times to me a MJ fan.

You got:
1. The Album with loads and loads of singles
2. Tons and tons of videos
3. The Bad World Tour
4. Moonwalker
5. Moonwalk book
6. And countless TV specials.

Just soooo much excitement!!!

As for the album.......it is underrated by the critics and media because by then they were soo jealous (that Thriller is the World's No.1 album) they were trying everything to discredit him and make up horrible stories about him.....

But for me, this my most listened to album........and Dirty Diana is my favourite song and the one I most listen to!!!

Bad is my favourite album, after Dangerous. I do think that it's underrated.. but I think to non-fans, anything other than Thriller isn't "amazing".

I'm not a fan of the 2001 special edition of Bad. Though the additional songs are great, they altered the actual title songs horn arrangement and it sounds a bit different than it originally did.
Even though its my favorite album, I tend to listen to Dangerous the most out of all his work.

In Moonwalk, he said that while creating Bad, his goal was to come as close to perfection as possible, and I feel that he accomplished that goal. The only two songs that I am lukewarm about on the album are Bad and Speed Demon. But I can definitely listen to it straight through.

Man In The Mirror is my favourite song ever... even though it's not written by Michael himself.

call me nuts but speed demon is one of my favorites :D

Speed Demon is great..Love the Bass in it.

Bad is a brilliant album...It's my fave MJ album, and Speed Demon is one of my absolute favourite songs of his...I think it's genius, actually...the lyrics are deeper than I thought :)

Bad was my fav album til HIStory was released..

However even tho I love the entire album, many of my non-MJ fan friends think it sounds too dated.. Very 80s..

While I agree that much of the instrumentation sounds outdated, I still love the entire Bad album!

Bad is my favourite album :)
I agree with the rest of the posts the critics tried to bring Michael down after to amazing sales of Thriller.

Bad is not my favorite album, but I do think it is an amazing piece of art. It's like somebody said earlyer - I tend to see it more like a collection of hits than an album. Also, I do think it sounds a little dated. Off the wall and Thriller have a more fresher sound...
About the public perception, I think Bad is under-rated and not at the same time. It sold really really well but, at the same time, it was very anticipated, being the next album, after Thriller so, I guess that the critics and the general public had amazingly absurd expectations from this album and, given the fact that the sound was totally different from Thriller, they were automaticaly disappointed. :)

For me great music last's forever and will never become dated, no matter what instruments are used.

Bad sounds more fresh than any the mainstream crap we're getting today

^ I didn't compare it with modern music nor was I ignorant to the greatness of this album. It is a massive album, a true slice of music-history. Still, it's not my favorite MJ album, but it is just my oppinion and taste. There is no need to be mischievous.

I wasn't talking to you, i was just speaking in general

I think it's underrated simply due the fact it is always criticised. I don't get the criticism for BAD at all. It's definetely better than the garbage that is considered good nowadays.

Mine too! Partly because I visualize the music video with Michael looking so darned adorable and sexy everytime I hear it.

Still I do think a song like Streetwalker would have had more hit potential, and I always wonder why they didn't release it instead?

Yes, I've also wondered about Streetwalker. From what I remember from an interview, it was a toss between Streetwalker and Another Part of me. Maybe one of the reasons the song never got on the album is because it has a similar feel to The way you make me feel? The video, at least, would have also worked with Streetwalker, I think. :)

The only criticism for BAD I've heard is that it hasn't ages well and sounds the most dated of his work. I agree wholeheartedly with analogue that good music doesn't age and that being said behind Dangerous Bad is my favourite MJ album.

One of the things i love about Bad is that MJ cut the collabaration B.S and wrote and composed most of the songs himself. Bad is the closest we're ever gonna get to having an album that's fully written and composed by MJ himself
