Spike Lee BAD 25 Documentary- DVD / Blu Ray [available on iTunes Nov 19]

Re: The Spike Lee BAD 25 Documentary /DVD/ TV / Theater Release [Discussion]

I am wondering if Michael's kids watched this. They will be so proud of their dad.

Re: The Spike Lee BAD 25 Documentary /DVD/ TV / Theater Release [Discussion]

64 mins is less than half the full length (134 mins). Roll on next week when it's on BBC uncut and no adverts.

Re: The Spike Lee BAD 25 Documentary /DVD/ TV / Theater Release [Discussion]

I enjoyed it a lot. I would have appreciated some kind of fade out before breaks though ABC.

Re: The Spike Lee BAD 25 Documentary /DVD/ TV / Theater Release [Discussion]

After reading about all the people who were interviewed, I was expecting to see more of them. However, I understand the piece had to be edited, so this is more like a preview of the doc to me. I am so grateful we have this on a major network, so that several people can enjoy it. It should get some fabulous reviews on Amazon.

Am I the only one who muted the tv as soon as the commercials came on?

Blue I took that comment about "white" another way. To me, the person was saying that Michael went to Africa several times and enjoyed it there; he also was among the 1st major artists to make a song about "beautiful black women," i.e., a woman from Liberia which is in Africa, and this happened when people were saying he was trying to be "white." So the guy is saying look at what Michael did and look at where he went while you fools sit there and say he is trying to be white. Therefore, in the context the statement was made in the doc, I have no problems with it.

What about CTV 2 in Canada
is their version also the 64 minute one ?

Re: The Spike Lee BAD 25 Documentary /DVD/ TV / Theater Release [Discussion]

This is great promotion for the BAD25 album and the Documentery :) This was very postive for Michael and all of Twitter and other social networks were raving about it and praising it. If anyone wants to see the whole thing buy the DVD .. We were told in advance it was going to be edited to fit a 90 min timeslot so I see no reason to complain that it was edited. It served its purpose peaked more interest and will be great for sales of both the album the Wembley DVD and the Documentery. This is something we should be celebrating tonight .. everyone else is .. That what I came back to this thread to do.

Someone recorded it and it will be up in the 2000 Watts multimedia forum soon.

Seeing the footage from Bad and Leave Me Alone (not the music videos or behind the scenes camera footage. The raw film footage of outtakes), it makes it look like it was shot yesterday! I love how they can go back to the original film prints for this stuff and show it in HD.

that's the beauty of film that non-hd videotape can't replicate (that's why videotape can't be upscaled to look like film). film makes movies shot 75 years ago like "the wizard of oz" look like they were shot yesterday :D

Slightly off topic, but I imagine the Michael Jackson archives looking just like the Star Trek/Paramount archives in this video.
Shelves lined with film reels, tapes, CDs, photos, papers, negatives, etc. etc.

(they recently went back to the film reels to remaster the first season for Blu-Ray, which is a long proces because each episode was shot on film, transfered to tape, and edited from there).

Just watch the first 50 seconds.

The one thing I didn't like is the person whom mention of some thinking MJ was trying to look white comment. For once can't they just say Vitiligo? And I know they meant with his plastic surgeries too. I just think ish like that is unnecessary to say if u don't say the truth about them, instead just leave them out there like it might be true. SMH Anyways, can't wait to buy the Blu-ray version.

correct me if I'm wrong but didn't that person said in quotes. In other words they were sarcastic of the public and tried to mean that for a person who was supposed to be trying to become white, he was focused on black beauty.

Re: The Spike Lee BAD 25 Documentary /DVD/ TV / Theater Release [Discussion]

I just would like for people to just say straight up the man had Vitiligo! Far more easier to get to the point. But ya I get what ur both saying as well too! I just feel that the reason why we had such a long example of why he didn't loose his connection with his race and black people is because of many years of people not believing he had Vitiligo. Which in my opinion was something that should have been included in the doc, if they were gonna go there.

I've read that it'll be airing on BBC sometime soon..

Anyone know if it'll be in English? Full length?

That last part... ...I wasn't prepared for that.

Can't wait for the DVD :)

Spike could do a doc on EVERY solo album as far as I'm concerned  DSTYGE :D

He says original being 2 hours and 11 minutes. That means in UK, BBC 2 is going to show all of it and without any commercial breaks:wild:

This is from BBC 2 schedule on 1st December
21:45 – 00:00

Michael Jackson: BAD 25
Spike Lee documentary looking at Michael Jackson's 1987 blockbuster album, Bad.

Re: The Spike Lee BAD 25 Documentary /DVD/ TV / Theater Release [Discussion]

Did they cut out Sheryl's comment about Michael's arousal? And the kiss with Tatiana? And Joe's comment that Michael should have f*cked Tatiana? Am I too paranoid if I suspect an agenda in removing all heterosexual references regarding Michael?

I got an impression from the interview with SP, (posted earlier by MsMo) that it was Spike who did editing to allocated time slot.

Zap2it: How different is the television version of "Bad 25" from what you prepared for theaters?

Spike Lee: With TV, you have commercials, so it's shorter. The theatrical version runs two hours and 11 minutes ... and for television, it's something like 64 minutes. [That editing was] painful, but that's TV. At the same time, it's being shown on ABC on Thanksgiving, so there will be a ton of people who will be in front of their televisions that night. I'm happy about that.
----------------------------------------------------------

Most fans have already watched the German version anyway and would later get the DVD. What I would have liked is general public to see more of candid Michael shots, because they speak for him better than any of those talking heads (however famous and grateful they are). Cutting out MJ footage is inexcusable.

P.S. I also find it sad that Germany and UK are showing the full thing and Michael's home country had to "make it general public friendly." But that's a completely different sore topic.

I agree with your post. Hopefully in US, full version will be shown in other tv networks later, ABC just bought rights to broadcast it first.

Re: The Spike Lee BAD 25 Documentary /DVD/ TV / Theater Release [Discussion]

Wasn't Justin Bieber in the full version too? Funny how they cut him out.

It might have been conscious choice to cut his part out:D

I had a curious peek on Bieber's twitter, his fans were watching this document just because they expected to see him.
Now they are going to have to buy DVD if they want to see him.

Re: The Spike Lee BAD 25 Documentary /DVD/ TV / Theater Release [Discussion]

So the UK gets the full 2hr 15mins doc?!? YYYYYYEEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!

I think that's what many of us thought too, but it's very clear from what the Estate have said in the past that MJ did not organise his footage very well and didn't take care of it - that is part of the reason why the Wembley concert has been released from a VHS. A lot of MJ's footage is either mis-labelled or not labelled at all and much of it is not stored in a logical order, or in logical places. It seems to be in random boxes scattered across multiple sites. It certainly wasn't being stored in proper conditions, which given how careful MJ was to document his life, seems unusual to me. What's the point in recording so much of your life and employing videographers etc to follow you round and then not keep your footage organised and in good condition?

I've read that it'll be airing on BBC sometime soon..

Anyone know if it'll be in English? Full length?

It's being shown in the UK on BBC2 (British Broadcasting Corporation) so of course it will be in English, what other language would it be?

Back to the US version. It's a pity the show was hacked down to 60 something minutes, but it's great that it was shown in the USA at all.
I bet Bieber felt a little let down when he realised he had been cut from the show (seems strange as he's so popular), but it's good that he encouraged his fans to watch the show, hopefully their inner MJ fan has been encouraged by what they saw. He has been given props to MJ since he made it big (the same as his mentor Usher).

On Amazon.com, BAD25 Deluxe edition is currently #44 in music and the 2CD version is #276 in Music.
The Wembley concert is #4 in concert DVDs.

Also, for those who are interested, the viewing figures for the Rolling Stones documentary "Crossfire Hurricane" should be available on the BARB website next week but as an early indication, for the week ending 11th November the most watched show on BBC2 had 3.08 million viewers. The 10th most watched had 2.35million, the 20th had 1.94 million, the 30th had 1.63million. Assuming BAD25 is well advertised I would guess it would hit the Top10, but if it goes Top5 I would expect somewhere between 2.5 and 3million viewers.
Occasionally a show breaks the mould, for example the recent Top Gear James Bond special had just over 4million.

Thank you, Spike Lee!!

I'm speechless...

Your instinct about Nelson George is spot on. He and the lady journalist were part of the black community extremely critical of MJ, accusing him of abondoning his roots, wanting to be white. They did not accept he had vitiligo. And offered zero support during the allegations.
