Rijo Jackson will be off to the Midwest to play basketball for Northland College. Northland, which is based in Ashland, Wisconsin, is an NCAA Division III program.
Jackson, a cousin of the late pop icon Michael Jackson and a Lompoc High graduate, is the first from his family to attend a four-year school, according to a Hancock-issued press release.
"I cannot wait to get out there, play and represent my family, Hancock and the Central Coast," Jackson, who played for the Bulldogs during the 2012-13 and 2013-14 seasons, said in the release.
"Michael was like a father to me. I grew up surrounded by my mother, sister and grandma, and he took me under his wing. I know he is looking down on me with a smile on his face."
Rijo Jackson said, "I spoke to Northland players, and they said there is a true brotherhood on the team. I checked out the college and area on social media sites and the Web. I am excited for the new experiences ahead of me."
Hancock qualified for the state playoffs during both of Jackson's seasons with the team. He played in 38 games during his Hancock career, averaging 2.9 points a game during his freshman season and around four points a game his sophomore year.
Jackson shot 32 percent from 3-point range his freshman season and 33 percent from beyond the arc his sophomore year.
Jackson had to deal with an injury during the 2014-15 school year.
"Rijo had opportunities to play for schools last year but couldn't because of a foot injury," Hancock coach Tyson Aye said in the release. "For Rijo to persevere after a year off is a testament to him. He never gave up on his dream and worked hard to make it happen."
Jackson worked as a childcare provider and youth instructor at the Lompoc YMCA this year.
"The year away from competitive basketball really fueled my fire to keep working hard to play at a four-year university," said Jackson. "I played in a recreation league, but it wasn't the same as college ball."
Northland's men's basketball team finished 8-15 last season.
Jackson plans to major in social justice or sociology at Northland. He said he wants to work with underprivileged children as a social worker or probation officer.
Jackson is the fifth of Aye's Hancock's players to move on to a four-year school to play basketball. Aye just finished his second season at Hancock.

I remember he testified for Michael in 2005.

ETA: Michael with Rijo and his sister Simone. They both testified for Michael in 2005.

For reference

We've discussed Michael's generosity in this thread and Chris jokes about it in his stand up and said Michael gave him a TV etc

I don't know if that's how it actually happened but we know Michael tended to give expensive gifts to his friends of all ages - Chris Tucker, Elizabeth Taylor, his cousins

Didn't he give Tito a car?

'Grooming' my ass

He has talked about Michael before too:

Yes, he mentioned this TV stories several times and I think it's true. Michael was generous with everyone. The whole grooming narrative is nothing but BS.

“After the verdict, we went back to Neverland. Michael thanked me so much for supporting him. He told me he loved me so much and said he was especially proud because I never wanted anything from him but love.
“He said to me, ‘TT, I have a gift for you’. I said, ‘Michael, you don’t have to give me a gift’.

“But he said, ‘No, I really want to give you something because you never ask for anything.
“He was really persistent and kept saying, ‘Come here, come here, come here’.
“He walked me over to his garage and he had two Bentleys and he said, ‘Pick the one you want’.
“That’s the kind of guy he was. I chose the one that he had signed inside the car. It’s beautiful. I’ve still got it.”
Despite his upbeat mood following the not guilty verdicts, Tito said the trial ruined Jackson’s life.
“Michael was never the same again,” he said. “It changed him a lot.
“He became far less trusting of people, even children, because they had hurt him. From being so relaxed around them he became a lot more cautious. In some ways, the trial ruined his life.
“He left Neverland and went on this search to find a comfortable place – somewhere he could relax and get over everything.
“Sadly, I don’t think he ever did find that place. He was searching right up until he died.”

Oh I'm sure it happened but I'm also sure he makes it funnier than it was  I think he was so generous Chris had to mention it

Sidenote: I haven't actually seen Evan Ross since he was a kid, but he's a total B.A.B.E. now. Diana :eek:k: Hahaha.

It feels so strange to be reading this six years later. I don't even remember reading it at the time, I may very well have, but for some strange reason it now feels more important than it was then. I definitely remember where I was and what I was doing when the verdict was announced. It's all just a cruel reminder of the terrible need to even have a "trials and tribulations" section to the site...........

I've always had a soft spot for Evan, because he's Diana's little baby and I just think he is too adorable. Here's a little vid that I watch from time to time where he's talking to a friend of his about Michael being an inspiration to him-and at the end he denies that he's Michael's son in a jokey way-saying "Not that I would mind :) )

PS-I know I've probably asked before, but does anybody know where the Spence family came from? I only remember seeing them around the Captain EO time-and I was wondering if maybe the parents were working on the set-or they were connected with the production company-or how did they all become acquainted.
Most of the times, the kids in Michael's life have a back story-related to showbiz relations-they're people he actually knew a really long time.

As far as I know he was a friend of Tito's sons.

His mother, Marion talked to a fan a couple of years ago and this is what she said:

Spence

Marion Spence and her son Jonathan became family friends in the mid-80’s. Meeting the Jackson’s, “when my son would play baseball and he [Michael] used to be there with some of his family at the baseball game. Because his brothers children would be playing baseball at the same time. So we got to know them very well and got to know Michael very well,” Marion said.

Elaborating further Marion stated, “We used to go to Havenhurst– to the family house on Havenhurst and Latoya would be there and Janet would be there and Tito, his brother, had a house up in Big Bear and we were invited up there for a weekend. The whole family was nice with us. Very, very nice –his mother would call and say Hi and how’s everything and when are we going to see Jonathan.”

Marion would tell me that although they never toured with the superstar, she and her son did spend a considerable amount of time with Michael, “We went to concerts, we went to Neverland which was wonderful –with Michael. He would send a car for us and we would spend the day together by the pool. Have dinner there in the evening and it was just wonderful. It was just like being in a hotel. We would stay in one of his houses on the estate. He was just a very generous, kind, loving person. I absolutely adored him everybody, I mean I don’t know anybody who didn’t. He was just very nice and I would never say anything wrong about Michael because there just isn’t anything to say. His mother was very nice. His family was very nice to us.”

“Jonathon used to go to Elizabeth’s [Taylor] house with Michael. And Sophia Loren’s house–she lived out here in West Lake or Calabasas and Michael went and they played with her two sons and she would make them spaghetti.” Michael would stop by the Spence family home to visit. Bringing along his chimpanzee Bubbles. “I have photographs of him giving him his banana up in the driveway. When I knew Bubbles he was very playful—Michael loved his animals,” Marion said.

Clearly irritated that anyone would suggest wrongdoing on Michael’s part Marion said, “Michael had a load of kids sleeping in his bed all
at the same time. There wasn’t anything funny going on there. He just liked to be around kids and toys. Michael was such a good person. He wouldn’t hurt a fly or anybody or anything. Michael was very kind hearted. The media harps on the tragic because that’s what people want to hear. They’re not interested on the good things too much. Anything that’s a scandal, they’re into it, but really they got the wrong person when they thought about Michael.” Her family did indeed have a long-term friendship with the superstar, confirmed that her son Jonathan was married at Neverland years later.

Is there any further info on this interview? Where it is originally from, who conducted it, when, etc.?

It was conducted by the person who does that blog.

Paula
Bio: Extensive research was done in the hopes of self publishing a book about Michael Jackson. A book by fans/for fans but for various reasons’ the book never came to fruition. I’ve personally put a lot of time, effort and money into tracking down documents. All quotes are derived from articles, court documents or interviews I have personally conducted.

https://turningthetableonthechandlerallegations.wordpress.com/about/

I think Paula is credible. She's got a lot of court docs, material otherwise as well. She dug up a lot of info and court docs about the MJ vs. Victor Guiterrez lawsuit, she did some correspondence with Rodney Allen, she also got docs from the Evan vs. MJ civil lawsuit in 1996 etc. A lot of that stuff can be found on her blog if you look around there.

She's also on Twitter where you can find some more docs that she dug up: https://twitter.com/tinklove05/media
If you want you can try to ask her about it personally (though she does not seem to be online very often): https://twitter.com/tinklove05

She shared this story:

Reagan Gomez ?@ReaganGomez

I always tell ya'll my fav MJ story from my hubby on the anniversary of MJ's death. Today is no different. Short storytime.

Reagan Gomez ?@ReaganGomez

So anyway, hubby's from the hood and comes from a football family. Like...every uncle/ cousin played HS/college. To this day. So 1 day.....

Reagan Gomez ?@ReaganGomez

...he was at the ranch. Playing football with Wade & a few others...who weren't really football players like he was. So MJ comes out...

Reagan Gomez ?@ReaganGomez

Says he wants to play. Hubby...a kid then was like "Pshht. Aight Mike" just knowing Mike about that football life like he was.

Reagan Gomez ?@ReaganGomez

Wade (the other kid in the group) threw a pass. Mike caught the ball. Hubby was ready for a tackle. When I tell you MJ jooked the tackle....

Reagan Gomez ?@ReaganGomez

...and ran faster than anyone hubby had ever seen before, in pennyloafers....on the grass....jherri curl flying in the wind....

Reagan Gomez ?@ReaganGomez

Hubby knew that day, Mike was about sports. Like... Really. That's my fav MJ story.

https://twitter.com/ReaganGomez/status/481935350726545408

From the timeline of DeWayne's wife. She's telling about when Quo (Wade Robson and DeWayne) and another kid rapper, Vicious were on tour:

" Next performance was in Vegas.... But before that, they were all going to watch some fight in Vegas. Wade's mom wouldn't let him go. Whatever. So hubby, Vicious & their .........road manager went. The next day, I guess Vicious got into it with Wade's mom. Hubby came in & Wade was looking sad. Hubby said..."

So once again we can see that Joy was a very strict and controlling mother. How on Earth would she not realize 7 years of abuse?

That's really interesting. So Joy was protective of her son I'm guessing not feeling a fight was a good thing for him to be exposed to? And Wade didn't try and hide it or sneak away from her? He actually had to do what she said? You'd think if Wade felt he could sneak around his mother and was used to lying because of MJ, they could've arranged something...

^ Happy Birthday Mac!

[h=1]Michael Jackson visits 5—year old Leslie Robinette at a hospital[/h]

January 13 - 2010

Michael Jackson visits 5-year old Leslie Robinette at a hospital, after she had undergone a bone-marrow transplant, leaving her with post-surgery depression; the patient has later on credited the famous visitor in person and publicly with enhancing her the will to live.

Leslie Robinette was 6 years old when she first met Michael Jackson. An ailing little girl with barely any hair and a swollen stomach, Robinette suffered then, as now, from aplastic anemia caused by the genetic disease fanconi anemia, which she describes as being “like a little Pac-Man going after all your bone marrow.” Jackson was only 15. Robinette now believes he must have been more nervous than she was.

leslie.jpg

In 1973, she and her family went to Seattle, where she stayed in Seattle Children’s Hospital – then The Children’s Orthopedic Hospital and Medical Center. Robinette received a bone marrow transplant, which at the time was an experimental surgery. She was one of the youngest to ever have the procedure. She went through chemotherapy, radiation and an ever-changing plethora of medications. But worst of all, she was kept in isolation for three months.
She spoke to her sisters through walkie-talkies, and only her mother was allowed in the room. Doctors told the family they had done all they could do, but her condition just wasn’t improving.

“After you go through all of that, you just get tired and want to go home; you kind of give up the fight,” Robinette said.
She listened to her favorite group, The Jackson 5, on a sterilized record player doctors allowed her to have.

On March 7, she received her first visitor.

“I was sitting in my room looking out the window, ironically listening to ‘Looking Through the Window’ by the Jackson 5, when I heard all the nurses going wild and carrying on,” Robinette said. She looked through the plate glass that was her only connection to the busy hospital and saw The Jackson 5 standing there. “They asked me which one I wanted to see, and I said I wanted to see Michael – he was the cute one,” Robinette said, laughing.

She described the teenage Jackson as obviously shy but incredibly kind and sincere. He gave her an autographed picture, held her hand and asked her how she was doing. “It had been so long since I’d touched someone not wearing gloves, and I saw hair instead of just a green cap with eyeballs peeking out,” said Robinette.

leslie2.jpg

After that visit, Robinette started getting better.

“I would never say that he saved her life – that’s crazy – but he gave her back a little of her will to live because she had lost it,” said Trine Robinette, 49, Leslie’s sister. Leslie eventually did improve, and her family returned to their farm in Greeneville, Tenn., where she still lives with her parents.

When Leslie was 17, she met Jackson again

The Jackson 5’s Victory Tour came to Knoxville in August 1984 for a two-night concert that was extended a third night because of its popularity. Nearly 50,000 fans crowded into Neyland Stadium each night to see the concert. Leslie Robinette received free tickets to the concerts, and on the third night, she went backstage to meet the whole Jackson gang. She brought Michael Jackson a hand-written birthday card. “I asked him if he remembered me, and he said yes. We talked about my singing in chorus and how I was getting my back brace off soon,” Robinette said. Jackson then told his security detail that she was his guest, so she got to watch the third show from a raised VIP platform, seated right next to Jackson’s mother, Katherine.

When Robinette left Seattle Children’s Hospital three months after her first meeting with Jackson, doctors said she might live 10 years. Still struggling with her disease, she is less than 4 feet tall and weighs about 60 pounds, but she is now 42 and lives an active life. Like Jackson, she has a strong passion for animals. She is involved in North American Riding for the Handicapped Association and currently is training to become an instructor.

“I’ve always felt that Michael and I were kind of kindred spirits, because we both grew up not being able to really go anywhere or do anything normal kids do,” Robinette said. Leslie was sitting in her rocking chair when Trine called to tell her about Jackson’s death, and she was upset by the news.

Both sisters agree that people can say what they want about Michael Jackson, but he did a lot of good and they hope that is what he will be remembered for. And, of course, his music.

Michael Jackson gives young girl will to live –

Posted on August 22, 2014

March 7, 1973. ~ Michael visits Leslie Robinette, a 6 year old girl in isolation at the Children’s Hospital in Seattle. Leslie underwent a bone marrow transplant, leaving her in a post-surgical depression. When she met Michael, she was a sick child with a little hair and a bloated stomach, suffering from aplastic anemia caused by a genetic disease called Fanconi Anemia.
In 1973, Leslie and her family went to Seattle, where she was admitted to the Children’s Hospital (then it was called Medical Center and Children’s Orthopedic Hospital). The bone marrow transplant she received at that time was experimental surgery. She was one of the youngest patients going through the procedure. She had to have chemotherapy, radiation and a constant change of medications. But worst of all was that she had to be isolated for three months. Everyone spoke with her through walkie-talkies and only her mother was allowed to be in the room. The doctors told the family they had done everything but her condition was not improving. “After going through all this, you’re tired and just want to go home, it is a way to stop the fight” Leslie said afterwards.

During the isolation, she was listening her favorite band, The Jackson 5, from a sterilized record player that doctors allowed her to have in the room…. and on March 7, she had a surprise visit.
“I was sitting in my room looking out the window, listening -oddly- the song “Looking through the window” of the Jackson 5, when I heard nurses going crazy and making a fuss,” said Leslie. She looked through the glass that was her only connection with the busy hospital and saw the Jackson 5 there.
“They asked me which one I wanted to see and I said – Michael-he was the cutest.”
Leslie describes Michael as an obviously shy but incredibly friendly and honest guy. He gave her an autographed picture, took her hand and asked her how she was. “It’s been so long since I touched someone without gloves. And I saw hair instead of just a green hat with eyes peeping through”. Michael was only 15 then, and Leslie now believes that he was more nervous than her.
After the visit, Leslie’s condition began to improve.
“I would not say that he saved her life, that would be too much – but he definitely gave her a desire to live because she had lost it”, says Trine Robinette, Leslie’s sister.
Three months after her encounter with Michael, Leslie left the hospital and returned with her family to their farm in Greenville. Although the doctors said that she could not live more than 10 years, Leslie is still alive, now 47 year old woman leading an active life although she is still struggling with her illness.

August 9, 1984. ~ Eleven years after, when Leslie was 17, she met Michael again.
This time it was on the Victory Tour in Knoxville for two nights of concerts, which spread to a third night due to its popularity. Nearly 50,000 fans gathered at Neyland Stadium every night to see the show.
Leslie received free tickets and on the third night, she got backstage. She gave Michael a handmade birthday card. “I asked him if he remembered me and he said yes. We were talking about the choir where I sang and how soon will I get rid of the lumbar corset (for the disease),” said Leslie.
Then Michael told his security team that she was his guest, so she attended the third concert in a VIP box sitting right next to his mother, Katherine.

And very happy birthday to Evan Ross, who still tells great stories about Michael as a member of his family, as well as being a personal idol of his.
