We have lost Michael and now we have lost Prince, so who is the greatest living legend now?

Something hard to mull over here, when both were alive, we could pick and choose, but when Michael died, it was down to Prince, David Bowie, Madonna and a few others.

Choose anyone you like, but my opinion is none of the current crop come near to these two. Definitely not rappers or hip hop and R and b artists come close. So I limit my choice to older artists. I would say based on legacy alone, I would say Mariah Carey or Madonna for the women and The Rolling Stones for the men, solo artists probably someone like Little Richard.

Why Little Richard you ask? Well he is 83 and still performing, he made albums up to his late 60s, he is still out and about and in case you all have forgotten, he invented Rock and Roll and was the first to go "Whooooooooo!!!" Also I know Michael and Prince both borrowed his style and look (They all stole from me! I did it first). Plus not only is Richard talented with his voice and piano skills, but he has a larger than life personality, known to be both a good Christian and flamboyantly bisexual.

His musical career started in 1951 with a recording of a song called "Taxicab Blues" and in October 1955, Tutti Frutti was released becoming a huge hit and unleashing his brand of rock and roll on the world. Richard had 15 more hits up to 1958 with classics like Long tall sally, Good golly miss Molly, Lucille, The girl can't help it, Ready Teddy, Keep a Knockin and many more. He bought in the bombastic Rock and roll sound and his music appealed to whites as well as blacks, despite the white establishment letting Pat Boone cover his songs and make them bigger hits. Richard sold out arenas and toured the world with his band the Upsetters, before having a religious revelation on stage and rejecting Rock n roll to become a preacher. In 1962 he moved back into music with a tour of the UK and returned to Rock in the mid 1960s, being less successful, but having a young Jimi Hendrix play guitar in his group in the mid 1960s. His life spiralled down hill as he became addicted to cocaine and other drugs in the 1970s. In the late 1970s he had another revelation, cleaned up and found God again. By 1985 he was back on the Music circuit and made childrens albums and was an established elder celebrity. Still loving the Lord, Richard embraced his sexuality and became famous for his Jheri curl wig, pancake 31 make up and his way of saying "Shut up!". To me he is still the legend, the architect, creator and innovator of rock and roll, hallejulah!

So my choice is Little Richard what is yours, my only criteria is the person must still be living at the time of your post and prferably just artists who perform in the English language mostly please (As I know Celine Dion does a lot of French music).

Little Richard is a good choice. When I think of Michael and Prince together, I automatically think of Madonna.
Smokey. Diana Ross. Liza.

Stevie. Paul McCartney.

Some really good choices are in here (you can't choose just one), but don't forget Janet, and Mick Jagger guys. :)

I personally think you can't choose just one because out of all of the bonafide legends we have left no one in particular really stands head and shoulders above the others like MJ and Prince did their peers (especially MJ).

I also think that there are multiple tiers of legend status with MJ and the Beatles being at the top.

Paul McCartney

Stevie Wonder

Quincy Jones :D :shifty: (I´m only half teasing though ... that man IS a legend, both in Jazz and Pop)

GAAAHHH!!! Why did I forget Aretha Franklin? So ...

Aretha Franklin!

Chuck Berry is still alive too. It's crazy to think that we're living in a world where 80s/90s icons like Michael and Prince have passed away, but 50s rock & roll pioneers still walk among us. I'm glad that they got to live a long life. We should treasure them while we still can.

Now see, this is why I said there are multiple tiers to legend status.

Beyonce is a low tier legend (barely above icon status) along with Rihanna, and Adele.
She can put on a great show and she has a good voice, but what has she done to be anywhere near the same level as anyone else mentioned in this thread?

She hasn't innovated, created, or changed the music industry in any way.

Putting artist like Beyonce on the same level as artist like Prince and MJ cheapens Prince's and MJ's legacy.

I'll put it this way.

You'd have to put Beyonce, Adele and Rihanna together to equal half of MJ or Prince.

TLDR: Beyonce is great, but she hasn't done anything to be on the same level as anyone else mentioned in this thread, and if you think she has you're wrong or heavily misinformed. :)

The people that revolutionized music for the masses (popular) and totally changed the music game in the latter 20th century were Sinatra, Elvis. The Beatles and Michael.
So really only Paul is left.

I'd still put Stevie in legendary category.

I'm glad you mentioned ole blue eyes.
He's a bit underrated to me.

Personally for me it's Madonna.

Second only to MJ in my book.

Of course, Stevie also and although I'm not a big fan, McCartney.

I count myself very lucky to have seen these legends live:

MJ - four times from '88-'96
Madonna - three times, 1992, 2004, 2012
Stevie Wonder
Prince
George Michael

She's not quite there yet but I think she'll be considered a legend 10-20 years from now. To be honest, I don't think much of her artistic abilities (in terms of her creative input in her work) but there's no doubt she's had a huge cultural impact on this generation.

As far as current living legends, I would say:

Madonna
Bob Dylan
Stevie Wonder
Paul McCartney

David Gilmour.

To say there's only few legends alive is such a mistake.

Neil Young, Paul Mccartney, Roger Waters, Stevie Wonder, Eric Clapton, Phil Collins, Bob Dylan, Ozzy Osbourne, Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, and I can go on and on...

You guys must have been sleeping until now. Beyoncé's a songwriter, producer, dancer, actress and just released a visual album celebrating blackness and femininity.

With you on this one. Beyonce is now just now beginning to put a foot into that legend status; she's pushing 20 years in the game at this point. And while she hasn't done anything "revolutionary" music wise, She has altered the way albums are being released these days. Since her first "surprise" album release, everybody in the current gen is trying to drop "surprise" albums lol. Mariah Carey even tried to do it and failed. At least she's trying to go against the flow of current industry nonsense, gotta give her some credit for that. And her last 2 albums (especially her latest) have been excellent IMO. I am an MJ fan first, a Prince fan after, and then comes everyone else lol. Nevertheless, My pick for last real living legend would be Stevie Wonder.

You use those terms very generously. I do think Beyonce is talented but she's hardly a creative genius. She is on her way to legendary status but it's more to do with brilliant marketing, good voice, appealing image, hard work and the collaborative effort behind her art.

Feel silly now, Stevie Wonder is very worthy. He is very talented and his songs are legendary. Paul McCartney, less so, his post Beatles output is generally quite anodyne. I find wings pleasant but not genius like. Also like Richard most of them have not had hits or made much music in years.

I am still sticking with Little Richard, solely for his creational skills alone, and while I am mentioning him, how about Chuck Berry, another early rock n roll artist, and his first truly Rock Song - Maybelline hit the charts in July 1955, 3 months before Tutti Frutti. Berry also gave us Johnny B Goode and Brown eyed handsome man, two classic songs. Maybelline was important too, as it set up the recurring car and love motif in early rock songs. You begin to wonder is Maybelline the name of a girl he is chasing or his cadillac!

As for Beyonce, not even close, only been around since late 90s (Very late 90s like 1999) and all her music is the same weak r and b semi rappique bling bling rubbish. Same with Rhianna, and Kanye West. To me modern rap is not music, its just sex, violence and swearing to a drum machine beat. Her songs show only the most basic construction and her instrumental skills are non existent. They are not legends, but the 14 year old mouth breeders who have never listened to anything other than chart rap, urban soul, boy bands and Bieber would say they are legends.

At least no one has said Justin Bieber! Thank God.
