Quincy Jones' New Interview

Re: Quincy Jones new interview

To be honest, I agree with Quincy. Quincy is a little nuts, but he's right. But every musician borrows random ideas now and then - I do it myself .

Quincy never said that Michael borrowed random ideas. He straight up said that Michael stole a lot of songs.

To be honest, I agree with Quincy. Quincy is a little nuts, but he's right. But every musician borrows random ideas now and then - I do it myself - and Michael Jackson was addicted to plastic surgery. And it was drugs that killed him...no matter who administered it, the drugs killed Michael Jackson.

The worst thing he said in this interview was that Jimi Hendrix and The Beatles were talentless. And how Quincy kept on going on about how he can make a hit in his sleep. Maybe there is a reason why people don't hire him anymore to produce their records...he doesn't know what a hit is anymore. Dude's full of himself.

At least he didn't bring up the allegations. Quincy stepped around that, and I'm happy with that. And he never said Michael wasn't talented...he just said he wasn't completely original (and no musician, I don't care who it is, is...it's impossible to not repeat something someone else has done sometimes.)

He worked with him for 3 albums, why he didn't made a finish for his work relation with Michael after Thriller for example if he care about his plastic surgery ?
( he didn't talked about the drugs )

Re: Quincy Jones new interview

For me, an ex producer talking about MJ plastic surgery is unprofessional.
As I know Michael didn't ask him to shoot a videoclip with him.
An album is recorded in Studio, in studio as I know they records voices and sounds not faces that.

You sound just as bad as this senile idiot.

Re: Quincy Jones new interview

Bitter and twisted is how QJ sounds now. Very sad indeed. Speaking ill of someone who isn't here to defend themselves is pretty classless.

All this is doing is make Quincy look like a fool. I hugely respect him for what he’s achieved in music and the working relationship he had with MJ, however his comments in recent years have at times been extremely distasteful.

MJ never claimed to have had surgery due to a “disease”. His disease was vitiligo which was completely unrelated to the plastic surgery he had. He’s becoming bitter, senile and probably losing the respect of a lot of people with his comments.

In this interview he trashed The Beatles and U2, claimed he briefly dated Ivanka Trump and in an interview not long ago he said he has girlfriends all over the world. Sounds like a bit of a dirty old man now too.

Re: Quincy Jones new interview

But funny enough Quincy didn't want to talk about Bill Cosby. Shows what a punk b**** he is

Re: Quincy Jones new interview

I neither like that Quincy used to the word greedy, the thought of greed with someone that is so giving just doesn't reach my brain.. It does take a strong desire to wealth/power/status to reach NUMBER ONE though! and to be fair that is part of the definition of 'greedy'.

I am not defending what Quincy said, as you can read in my previous post what I think.. We do have to be fully aware that no one can have a drive to be number one and do it successfully with being on some level cunning.

Quincy really needs to thinking before he speaks - I get that he speaks what he feels, but thought in HOW it's said can make the worlds difference. and when you are dealing with Michael legacy, that effort is worthwhile.

Speaking of someone being cunning and slick comes off very different than 'greedy'

Re: Quincy Jones new interview

He's losing his mind with age.
The way he speaks about MJ, not just in this interview, but in others as well, is shameful, classless and uncalled for. They made great music together for a period of time, then they each went their own way doing different things. That's all Quincy needs to say.
JMHO
That's EXACTLY what I was thinking while reading the interview! He sounds as if he's gone senile and not knowing what he says anymore.

To be honest, I agree with Quincy. Quincy is a little nuts, but he's right. Quincy is not talking about 'borrowing' some ideas. He accuses Michael of stealing. And isn't that claim rather up to the composers of the songs mentioned? If they feel they've been betrayed, THEY should reach out to the estate or the courts and not Quincy who hasn't got anything to do with it (furthermore, he produced the songs, so shouldn't he be held responsible as well??)

And how can you claim Michael was addicted to surgery? Did you read the autopsy report? He could've had far more operations than he actually did. Having an addiction means that you can't stop. And Michael did stop, and pretty quickly.
And even if he had been addicted, which he wasn't, what's that got to do with the professional relationship they had? It's none of Quincy's business to comment on that. That was Michael's private decistion an no one should question it, same as no one should judge you by the colour of your car or your hairstyle.

Quincy just overstepped the mark.
I'm not saying all people should praise Michael.. of course you can say "well, I enjoyed this, but I didn't like that.." that's just normal. And I don't mind some of the stories people are telling like the ones from Brett Ratner or Chris Tucker. They only show that Michael was human. But throwing shade at someone you've worked with and been successful with for such a long time and claiming things without any proof is just bad behaviour.

He sounds like a senile man to me who lashes out because he think's it's cool.
I liked Quincy and that's just something I never expected of him.

I agree.
All the really great stars (musicians, painters, athletes etc.) have to have that drive and motivation and 'greed' for success. I would rather say it's a hunger for success, not greed, though. You also have to be an egoist, in a way, to achieve those high goals. Because 99% just aren't good enough. But that isn't something bad if you're doing it for your own success and if you're doing it with no intention of harming anyone. And I think that's the 'greed' (hunger) Michael had. And that's nothing bad.

Greed, for me, has a negative connotation.
And can you really imagine Michael stealing a bass hook so that he could make a great song? If Michael had heard something that great from someone else, he would've sat down, maybe with some anger and 'greed' in his chest, and he would've said to himself "well, if this artist can do it, I'm gonna do it even better". THAT was how he was. (Deliberatly) stealing from someone wasn't his style. He wanted to do it by himself. That's how he was himself and that's how he educated his children. Be the best at what you do.

So, there can be a good, useful hunger for something and there can be a greed for something. And Michael wasn't greedy in the way Quincy said he was.

Re: Quincy Jones new interview

Old, senile fart. A fool. Money hungry, bitter, jealous. A sucking ghost of jealousy. Very bad person. Nothing else. That is ALL.

He is so bitter and jealous now because he was getting millions for his production while Michael was making billions and that hurts him. He is bitter that he didn't get a better deal back then. He was getting paid for the project and not by percentage of album sales. That hurts him very, very bad. And that's why he's making up all these lies. And that is why he sued Michael for money. He wants more money and more recognition in history. Music critics and news reporters may like him now, in this generation, but in 10-20-30-50 years no one in general public will know about who Quincy Jones was. They will have to go to libraries to read old books to learn who he was. And Michael will be like Mozart, Beethoven, Elvis and The Beatles in schoolbooks. The whole world will still know who Michael Jackson was and everybody will still listen to the music he wrote and dance to the songs he sang.

Maybe it is better for Quincy's legacy to just die. Honestly.

Re: Quincy Jones new interview

I just listened to State Of Independence and it doesn't sound anything like Billie Jean. First few notes of bass line are similar if you slow it down very much, but just few notes and then the bass line starts to be completely different.

Also the original State Of Independence came out in 1981 and Michael wrote early demo of Billie Jean also in 1981, so...

Re: Quincy Jones new interview

But he's saying Michael stole it from Donna Summer I love dining summers but really did Donna Summer ever write a song? And she did cover version of this song. So why is he even trying to go there oh yeah he produced Donna Summers version

Did they only talk about what he said about MJ or the other stuff too?
What did they say about MJ? ****ign media now reports it liek MJ stole Billie Jean and DSTYGE. The whole songs.
Quincy is ruining MJ's legacy with his lies. And what a hypocrite he is.

MJ didn't get co producing credits for Billie jean and DSTYGE because Quincy wanted it all for himself evne thought the demos prove
MJ did co produce those songs. So whow as greedy?
He sued the MJ Estate for 30 million but he is not greedy?

Greg did get credit for arrangement for that 15 second bridge MJ talked about it in the Mexico deposition:
He just didn't get songwriting credit because well, what he did had no lyrics and no vocal melody it was more production and arrangement.

As for State of Independence the song sounds nothing liek Billie Jean there is a bass riff at the beginning which is similar if you slow it down
but who did MJ went from that to the Billie Jean riff? How did he think about that would sound great together with the drum intro?

Quincy himself told Jos Anderson the producer of State of Independece that HE and MJ took teh guitar riff and made it funker for Billie Jean.
How come he forgets himself int he story now and says that MJ took it all alone and he stole it when Anderson knew about it?

Re: Quincy Jones new interview

^ I am not sure yet.. My wife told me she saw it on TV.. would not give me much detail and said we'll talk about in person tonight.. so, all I know is she said "They talked about Quincy saying Michael stole music"....

Agreed! Musicians borrow and build on. I do the same. He talks about Coltrane "stealing" too. The problem is, I don't think it was his intent to say that these artists clearly were influenced by other sounds and created from that, he went scorched earth and call MJ a creative thief -- which is false.

I just don't see the need of discussing MJs plastic surgery at all. From anyone. I just don't see the value in that conversation but hey... he said what he said. It's very clear MJ had a problem with his image but what's the point in going on about it in an interview in 2018?

I've lost a lot of respect for Q as a person. He doesn't seem to value other people or have respect for them.

This old mother****er. He himself said he took that riff from State of Independence. He told that
To Job Anderson the producer of the album

Exclusive: Jon Anderson recalls Michael Jackson producer copying Friends Of Mr Cairo riffs

Jon Anderson has recalled how the 1981 album The Friends Of Mr Cairo which he produced with composer Vangelis inspired Michael Jackson's smash hit album Thriller.

The former Yes man claims that producer Quincy Jones told him that he and Jackson took a guitar riff from the record and "made it funky" for the 1982 hit Billie Jean.

Anderson tells the new issue of Prog magazine: "The luck of the draw, I met Vangelis – a very different kind of musician, who started the trend of electronic music. Over the 80s we were evolving musically, not thinking about what was hip or what was good business.

"There's my classic story of how we inspired Michael Jackson's Thriller. Quincy Jones told me that he and Michael had been listening to our album, The Friends Of Mr Cairo.

"They took the riff and made it funky for Billie Jean. Quincy said he'd been recording our song State Of Independence with Donna Summer, and I said he had an incredible guy singing backing vocals.

Then there is Thriller's bass riff and Rick James's song Give it to me baby. The riffs are similar so
Quincy and Rod Temperton stole music?

Re: Quincy Jones new interview

Quincy is clearly off his rockers. But I will not perpetuate the idea of certain fans defending Quincy's words. Y'all aren't real fans if you're defending a lick of Quincy's asinine claims. He's been riding on Michael's coattails since Off The Wall and he wants to act brand new and say that "Michael wouldn't have been who he was without me." Bitch please! Michael was successful before and after Quincy. Quincy Jones' name would have never been a topic of discussion outside of the music industry had Michael not given him the opportunity to produce three of his largest bodies of work.

Re: Quincy Jones new interview

Jon and Vangelis are the ones who actually wrote/composed and released 'State of Independence' in 1981. So basically, Donna (& QJ) covered (stole from) them in the first place. Also, it doesn't make sense for QJ to suddenly be pointing fingers to MJ, especially when he was the one sitting in the control room when Billie Jean was recorded(!)

Maybe Michael took inspiration from Jon and Vangelis + Hall & Oates for Billie Jean but he created an infinitely better song and in turn, inspired many others. What does it really matter? Nothing in modern music is truly original and all musicians borrow from each other. It's only considered ''stealing'' (plagiarisim) when you copy the entire song (incl. melody and lyrics) and then decide to sell it without permission and/or crediting the original artist/composer - which in the case for Billie Jean, it is not.

Re: Quincy Jones new interview

Just an idiot who shouldn't be taken seriously. A senile old man.

Re: Quincy Jones new interview

Billy Ocean's song Caribbean Queen was inspired by Billie Jean, and when asked about it in an interview Billy Ocean responded by saying ''Nothing is 100% original'' - And he's right.

Listen to the song and hear for yourself. It's not a rip off of Billie Jean, but you can hear the influence

Re: Quincy Jones new interview

It's such a shame that in modern society the media would rather pull someone down on a claim, than build them with the truth and highlight their achievements
But then again good news doesn't sell newspapers or bring traffic to websites, scandals and salacious claims do

This week I discovered I can lose further respect of Quincy. I wish the Estate would come out and defend Michael's legacy before it is tarnished by backstabbers who address themselves as friends....

Re: Quincy Jones new interview

So I did not see this coming but it's trending news.. I mentioned yesterday that they discussed it on The Real and Wendy Williams.. Last night I saw it mentioned on late night shows.

Interesting that the MJ section of his interview is the bigger story over his claim to JFKs assassination..
