Quincy Jones doesn't have very good things to say about Michael in a new interview:

http://www.vulture.com/2018/02/quincy-jones-in-conversation.html

You worked with Michael Jackson more than anyone he wasn’t related to. What’s something people don’t understand about him?
I hate to get into this publicly, but Michael stole a lot of stuff. He stole a lot of songs. [Donna Summer’s] “State of Independence (Originally written by Vangelis and longtime Yes front man Jon Anderson, “State of Independence” was recorded by Donna Summer in 1982. Jones produced Summer’s version, Michael Jackson helped out on backing vocals, and the song’s central riff does sound awfully similar (albeit faster) to the iconic bass riff on Jackson’s hit single “Billie Jean.” It should also be noted that, last year, Jones won a lawsuit over a royalties dispute against Jackson’s estate.) ” and “Billie Jean.” The notes don’t lie, man. He was as Machiavellian as they come.

How so?
Greedy, man. Greedy. “Don’t Stop ’Til You Get Enough” — Greg Phillinganes wrote the c section (Phillinganes, an in-demand studio keyboardist, played on a handful of Jackson-Jones collaborations, including the 1979 album Off the Wall, from which “Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough” comes. .) Michael should’ve given him 10 percent of the song. Wouldn’t do it.

What about outside of music? What’s misunderstood about Michael?
I used to kill him about the plastic surgery, man. He’d always justify it and say it was because of some disease he had. Bullshit

How much were his problems wrapped up with fame?
You mean with the way he looked? He had a problem with his looks because his father told him he was ugly and abused him (Jackson described being abused by his father Joe in a 1993 interview with Oprah, as well as in a 2003 interview with Martin Bashir. “It was really bad,” he recalled during the latter. .) What do you expect?

It’s such a strange juxtaposition — how Michael’s music was so joyous, but his life just seems sadder and more odd as time goes by.
Yes, but at the end Michael’s problem was Propofol, and that problem affects everyone — doesn’t matter if you’re famous. Big Pharma making OxyContin and all that shit is a serious thing. I was around the White House for eight years with the Clintons, and I’d learn about how much influence Big Pharma has. It’s no joke. What’s your sign, man?

I'll wait for others to comment first!!!

Re: Quincy Jones new interview

To be fair, he was tearing up EVERYBODY in this interview, including the Beatles, whom he said were "the worst musicians in the world." So...

The only thing I don't understand is, I just listened to 'State of Independence' and I don't hear an ounce of Billie Jean in there. What's he talking about??

Re: Quincy Jones new interview

seen ;)

Re: Quincy Jones new interview

He's losing his mind with age.
The way he speaks about MJ, not just in this interview, but in others as well, is shameful, classless and uncalled for. They made great music together for a period of time, then they each went their own way doing different things. That's all Quincy needs to say.
JMHO

Re: Quincy Jones new interview

I've tried giving him the benefit of the doubt on a few occations, but I just can't do that anymore. Quincy is simply just a horrible person

Re: Quincy Jones new interview

I love production on Michael's records but as a person he just frustrates me. Very little class and no morals

Quincy is up to his usual again. Didn’t MJ say at one point he was inspired by Hall & Oates for Billie Jean and not what Quincy is claiming?

And iirc Phillinganes had nothing but positives about MJ making music and all that. As for Quincy’s BS comment well the medical records prove that bit wrong, because there’s the proof Michael had Vitiligo and Lupus. And maybe some of the plastic surgery was for more than for that but who cares?

Anyway, interesting how he knew about Weinstein and others but yet did not say anything...that’s what people should be really focusing on.

Hi! New member here.

I think Q should stick to the art. what I especially don't like, is that he makes a lot of claims about a lot of people who aren't here to defend themselves and betrays a level of trust and loyalty you'd hope your friends have for you. Saying that Michael "stole" and that Marlon Brando slept with Richard Pryor/Marvin Gaye/and James Baldwin is just beyond the bounds of decency -- especially for people he claims were his friends. Q has progressively gotten worse when it comes to interviews and its clear he harbors animosity towards Michael in some ways -- maybe because of how their professional relationship ended. But he gave a GQ interview in January, and again, he goes off into lala land regarding some things... and much of what he's said you have to take with a grain of sale. Dated Ivanka Trump? Not likely. Currently dating 22 women? Ha! Some good stuff in his interviews + a bit of old man ramblings. Lucid and loopy at the same time.

Here's the GQ interview:https://www.gq.com/story/quincy-jones-has-a-story

Re: Quincy Jones new interview

Well, Sony did not want Mj to hired Q for the Off the Wall but MJ fought to have Q produce it so MJ was WILLING to share. Yes, I do think MJ may have been tough on some things but that is because MJ was going to make sure he get his dues and no one can take it from him. Like Michael said, "I know my worth" and I am not mad at MJ for that.

That's very interesting. But Greg went on to work with Michael for many years afterward. And went with him on tour all over the world. Did it never come up again? I don't get why Quincy was so antagonistic toward Michael in this interview. Just last month in the GQ interview he was asked about what made Michael unique and he was discussing his attention to detail and generally had good things to say about him and their collaboration.

Re: Quincy Jones new interview

I know........maybe for this interview he was off his meds that day. Trashing people who are no longer here to defend themselves is vile.

Re: Quincy Jones new interview

Those are Beatles fans defending. MJ does not have to prove nothing. The Estate does not need to say nothing. As for Mj skin, that is in his death record that he had medical issues.

Re: Quincy Jones new interview

I often appreciate candid behavior for various reasons.. But something should be said for the honor that sometimes comes with the unsaid.. I get Michael was not an angel, and as I have gotten older I have enjoyed seeing/appreciating the human side of Michael more and more.. good and bad!

I am not one to hate quincy like some here, but guy.. There is a code of ethics that comes with candid speaking! I appreciate a view point when it comes from an honest perspective.. even if bad - but when you care for someone's legacy.. One that you are apart of.. speak of it with respect

Re: Quincy Jones new interview

I see your point.....however there hasn't been any respect towards MJ by Quincy since 2009. Also he is two-faced; he can blab about his dead friend's sexuality and throw them under the bus, but yet he can't speak on Cosby "in public". Whatever.

I completely agree. Did you read what he said about Marlon Brando?! My goodness. Regardless of whether or not there is truth to it, he's not here to defend his dignity!

I never liked Quincy. He acts like they did 3 great albums together than Michael started to decline. Which is not the case.

For sure, but I feel like the media helped perpetuate that narrative unfortunately. I also think that in later years, Quincy started having this odd superiority complex over Michael because of how much attention/credit he was getting for his work. He somehow feels that because he was more experienced and classically trained that Michael was just a little kid in the studio doing what he was told. Yet every other musician or engineer that has worked with him, including Bruce Swedien, says otherwise.

Here are some of Rain Proy's tweets addressing Quincy's and Jennifer Proys's allegations;

Re: Quincy Jones new interview

I wish somebody who worked on 'Off the Wall' or 'Thriller' would stand up and say something. He wasn't even singling out that particular song he called Michael "greedy" and said he "stole alot of songs!" I can't believe what he's saying to the media. Michael Jackson of all people..greedy? Smh. If anything Michael was not careful enough about his assets and his wealth. He donated millions of dollars to charity and always acknowledged the people he worked with. We have so many stories of artists young and old praising Michael for how gracious and humble he was. And how he was always thankful, appreciative, and encouraging of other people's work. And even if Quincy (who was the producer on BOTH songs that he's alleging Michael stole from) felt that there was some similarity in the riff, that doesn't give him the right to judge Michael' s entire musical catalog and say that "he stole lots songs!" That's just downright ludicrous and very disrespectful.

Re: Quincy Jones new interview

It's funny when you look back at the 80s Quincy interviews and he has nothing but positive things to say. Fast forward to today, when Mj can't defend himself he starts telling these lies. I think old age, bitterness $$, and jealousy is what we are seeing here..

Re: Quincy Jones new interview

To be honest, I agree with Quincy. Quincy is a little nuts, but he's right. But every musician borrows random ideas now and then - I do it myself - and Michael Jackson was addicted to plastic surgery. And it was drugs that killed him...no matter who administered it, the drugs killed Michael Jackson.

The worst thing he said in this interview was that Jimi Hendrix and The Beatles were talentless. And how Quincy kept on going on about how he can make a hit in his sleep. Maybe there is a reason why people don't hire him anymore to produce their records...he doesn't know what a hit is anymore. Dude's full of himself.

At least he didn't bring up the allegations. Quincy stepped around that, and I'm happy with that. And he never said Michael wasn't talented...he just said he wasn't completely original (and no musician, I don't care who it is, is...it's impossible to not repeat something someone else has done sometimes.)

Re: Quincy Jones new interview

Shouldnt hate on people with dementia. Feel sorry for the old fool. Just a shadow of what some thought he once was.

Re: Quincy Jones new interview

My thoughts are with Michael....
Why so many snakes around him:(
