A weighted audio stream is a stream that is already counted towards the albums or songs total. You can't double count streams.

if you have a premium subscription your stream counts faster to one album sale. there are tiers to it according to billboard.

SEA's are calculated by adding up total song streams from an album and dividing by 1,250 for premium streams or by 3,750 for free streams.

This is why artists now put a lot of tracks on their albums. So less people have to stream to count towards a sale.
For example Madonna has 50 songs on her new album. So her die hard fans streaming the entire album 1 time through would count more towards the sales than if you only streamed 10 songs all the way though.

Interesting! I wonder if this explains why the estate is doing 15 additional digital tracks on Thriller 40 in addition to the 10 unreleased ones.

Yep. Plus a lot of the remixes that came on the original singles aren't on his page at all., unlike janet, whitney, madonna, etc. So its probably those being the digital only tracks. I think Thriller 40 will get a decent amount of physical sales though. It already does well on the top album sales chart and it hasn't had the rerelease yet.
 
I think the estate is smart to bundle the singles remixes to the rerelease of thriller's parent album. It will all count towards one total instead of them being listed as a single only. The xscape single edits don't count towards the album at all which is about 8-10m streams not being counted towards it. This way the streams won't be split between everything. Madonna, Janet, Prince, all have split streams which hurts their album releases on the charts.

Thank you for this. I feel like I'm in a mad science fiction novel. I've been browsing the first page of this thread and from there hopped over to the OCC website (where I picked up the 'weighted audio stream' nugget).

As of June 2018, apparently, 600 audio or video streams from an ad-supported service = 1 physical sale.

100 audio or video streams from a subscription service = 1 sale

Radio plays don't count in the UK but they do in the US.

UGC videos don't count (which seems fair).

I'm not in Kansas, any more, lol. :ROFLMAO:
 
Thriller is the first Diamond album to achieve a Diamond single, since Adele's two major singles from 21 are undercertified.

Also, when Beat It surpasses the Diamond threshold, Thriller alone with have a 3X Diamond album certificate (34x and counting) and 3X Diamond singles. Absolutely insane.

I believe xscape is eligable for platinum now. It was last certified gold in 2014 and it has gained +600k in streams to sales since then. Its the only "new" album from his peers madonna, prince and janet that was released around that time to be certified at all.

according to this data, MJ has a total of 140m followers/subscribers/facebook likes/instagram followers/twitter followers on all platforms since this month.

he has gained 317,951 followers (not the same as monthly listeners) in the past month.

Michael has over 1.6 billion video on tiktok that link back to his music. this doesn't include videos that tag him or mention his name. its just the videos that link directly to his cataloug on tiktok.
 
this is michael's current playlist reach total and per song. playlist reach is the number of likes a playlist featuring his songs has. billie jean is obviously his most playlisted song with 56.8m likes total. playlists is a big reason songs become hits today. like airplay on the radio.

I feel exactly the same. I remember the days, I'd go into Our Price or Virgin or wherever, buy a record, it would get into the charts ...

Or it wouldn't.

Radio plays don't count in the UK bc it's regarded as 'passive'. But likes are apparently being counted and sort of *are* equivalent to airplay.

Like I said, I feel like I'm in a science fiction novel. It's kinda hilarious.

I understand all of this but also kinda don't. Or maybe I just don't want to, lol. :D

I don't know these days having a hit feels less earned. Even I contribute streams every now and then with the latest hype album jut to check it out. In the past I probably wouldn't have bothered.

This is fascinating! It's so interesting that he's gone up in every platform except Facebook. I would say this speaks more to the decreasing popularity of Facebook. However, that's so many people in one month unfollowing the FB page! Not percentage wise, obviously, just individually. So weird to me lol. I don't think it means anything, I'm just sort of fascinated by all of this data.

So cool to see him growing across everywhere else though! I was amazed when I realized his YT account has more subscribers than several major contemporary artists.
 
This Halloween season - with it being Thriller 40. Let's stream the hell out of that album! I'm personally going to do Beat It a lot... Reason: MJ just became the first/only artist to have 2 singles that went Dimond!! Billie Jean & Thriller. Beat it is the third highest and the closest to reaching Dimond, I hope to see 3 singles Dimond eventually.

All of this is absolutely incredible. And seriously -- THIS is the kind of stuff we need to be celebrating!! With everything Michael and his legacy have been through, I think fans can get caught up in the minutiae of things not going well. It's understandable. But my God, there is so much to be proud of. So much to celebrate. Other artists would kill for his legacy! I mean, his popularity is staggering to this day.

I really love the idea of a very pointed and intentional streaming party! Maybe one of our data experts here could make a thread and post some specific songs/albums/videos close to hitting milestones and we can all stream like crazy as much as possible :)

They probably removed inactive or old accounts. That’s most likely the reason for his decrease on Facebook.

I know for sure ghosts is close to it’s next milestone of 100m streams on YouTube. I know there is a movement on Twitter for fans trying to get thriller to number one this Halloween. Ghosts deserves recognition too.

I think Beat It will eventually go Diamond. I hope it can reach that milestone before Thriller 50.
 
- With The Lady In My Life going gold, Baby Be Mine remains the only song from Thriller to not have any certification. I hope someday it will get a certification too, so all songs from Thriller have a certification.

- Speaking of TLIML, in this day and age, even songs that weren't officially released as singles are eligible for certification, which is why TLIML got a certification. I am wondering if non singles such as Working Day and Night and Dangerous (song) are eligible for any certifications. They are more popular songs that TLIML and Michael performed them live plenty of times.

- On an another note, The Essential Michael Jackson spends 400 weeks on Billboard 200. It becomes Michael's second album after Thriller to reach that milestone.
