The main and the only problem of This Is It tour was lack of "Invincible" content?

That's another thing too, we were getting reimaginings of the songs. it wasn't going to be like the 30th anniversary concert. There were going to be new elements added to literally everthing. It's like they knew he wasn't going to be able to totally hold it on his own but the extras were all an extension of his mind and his artistry. You see the costumes and the staging and the videos and just go, wow, what could this have been?
I wouldn’t say that’s totally accurate. There were some fun new visuals and some intriguing codas to songs (“The Drill,” “Threatened”), but the performances themselves were the same as they’ve always been. I’d call it style over intrigue.

Again, I think it would’ve been the best tour MJ ever did bar none. But I wouldn’t say he was offering anything different in terms of performance or structure. Same songs performed largely the same way he has since the beginning in largely the same order.

A bigger problem was the costumes, most if not all of them wouldn't have been suitable to perform in.
The BOW studded black and gold jacket weighed like 10 pounds, no way Michael could handle that, let alone perform in it at that point in the concert.
Didn't like those Zaldy outfits. Thought they were ugly, clunky and looked way too heavy and uncomfortable.

Another issue is some of them contained too many crystals, which would make them likely blinding to the audience under heavy bright concert lights
Agreed. On a practical level I couldn't see them working. OTT sparkly, shiny outfits are fine but Michael needs to be able to move, lol.

I think he wasn't too impressed with the shoulder pads ..Of what we saw ..Also , No, to that grey suit. thank you.
I didn't like Zaldy's design too much either. I might've got used to it after a while ..maybe. Sadly we never got that that chance.
i liked the blue /purple gossamer shirt ...don't know who that was.
The black jacket with the cross on the back. Now we're talking. i'm not sure who designed that, or even if he was supposed to wear it.

They were dreadful. Forget whether he could move / dance in those costumes. Just the aesthetics, ugh!

The grey suit always makes me feel weirdly tearful. Not sure why. Also, it never looked like it fitted him properly. wth? This is Michael Jackson. His outfits should be immaculate.

Yes, that shirt was lovely! And the fabric flowed beautifully.

Yeah, the goth coat he wears in BOW is fabulous. See, I'm confused by talk of Zaldy's BOW outfit. What was that? Bc in the film we see him in that goth coat, he has those gorgeous pants on with the sparkly side seam, and then that beautiful flowing white shirt. When he's saying to Orianthi, 'It's your time to shine, we'll be right there with you.' His outfit there is beautiful, imo. But the Zaldy stuff that I have seen is anything but beautiful or graceful or flowing or understated. He seems to do heavy, OTT, clunky stuff.

or even if he was supposed to wear it.
This is what I mean. The BOW outfit that we see seems way too beautiful to just be a rehearsal outfit. But it doesn't seem to be Zaldy's style at all.

One Night Only would've been the only "reinvention" tour. That's why MJ fibbed and said he was ill that day lol. I'm mostly kidding..

I heard a rumour Mike had Michael Bush design a set of back ups, because he could see some would be difficult to perform in
Dennis Tompkins and Michael Bush, yes. These aren’t just rumors. Some of these designs can be seen in Bush’s book. According to Karen Faye who was heavily involved with Michael’s vision during 2009, and one of few people he trusted, Zaldy was brought in by Travis, who along with others supposedly got a fee for every person they helped hire, including others who would work on Michael’s look or sound.

At the TII press conference Michael said, he wanted to perfom the songs his fans wanted to hear.
But not even his fans knew about the existence of Invincible. Only the die hards. That's why Invincible was missing from TII.

I would have been disappointed had we've been lucky enough to see the This Is It concerts and Mike performed, for example

YRMW not The Way You Make Me Feel
Butterflies not Human Nature
Privacy not Dirty Diana
Cry not Man In The Mirror
Unbreakable not Jam

As much I like Invincible as an album, 8 years had passed, Mike had been on a tour in 12 years. As a fan who never saw him live I wanted the hits, the choreography, the showmanship.

Even if that meant the Set list was basically a DWT/HWT hybrid with Dirty Diana back again

I keep seeing clips from the rehearsals on Twitter that weren't in the This Is It DVD, where is everyone getting the footage from?

Maybe from a featurette or promo? Nothing has been released since the DVD many years ago. Sony has a lot of footage left that they have said in the past will be released in the future.

I remember before the tour was to begin that a newspaper came out with a trackless and it featured Girlfriend

On TII tour announcement Michael stated, that he was going to perform songs, his fans wanted to hear!

As mentioned previously, this comment by Michael was hinting towards a voting feature that was available on the official website for fans to decide on what songs they would like to be performed in the show. See the image below for the poll results. As you can see, the only Invincible song that managed to make top 20 was You Rock My World. Unbreakable just about scraped top 40, but beyond that there are no other substantial votes for other Invincible songs.

And? Remember The Time is on 14th place, but it wasn't included in track list... This poll wasn't important. As you can see most songs, that was lower, had been chosen

It was about getting fans to get involved with the idea, it wouldn't have changed the tracklist. We know what people are like, they tend to follow funny meme trends sometimes. Next thing you know he's singing "what's up wit u?" and having to bring Eddie Murphy out for 50 dates.

I think the setlist choices were bang-on. And as I've also said, Invincible would have been worked into the interludes like Heartbreak Hotel was worked into the Dangerous set.

I think we need to see all of it, even the stuff that may not be so complimentary. Those were the last weeks and days of Michael Jackson and if he appears "out of it" as has been alleged in all sorts of places, then it's important for the fans to actually see that. Definitely the concepts for all of the songs are important to share. I also think a re-release of official merchandise on the official store for the concerts would be of interest too. Hector Barjot just picked up 50 of the tour T shirts and I know I'd definitely buy one.

Still boggles my mind that “Jam” made it onto the set list over higher-ranking songs. It’s a great song, but… come on. You’d hope a farewell tour (of sorts) would pull out some deep cuts and treat the fans a bit.

He chose songs that have been choreographed before. It really is that simple. Fans never really had a say, it was about fan engagement, much like today's Twitter polls.

The two underrated songs I would have loved to see live are Who Is It and Whatever Happens but I am not surprised they weren't picked.

They weren't really doing stuff like that yet. Terminally online back then wasn't a thing, unless you hung around this site probably.

As said before new fans would be seeing him for the first time. It was just being marketed as his last tour, it wasn't going to be, and he wasn't going to exclude all his hit and songs with big dance numbers.

Who knows what could have happened later in the tour. Pretty sure Michael Prince talked about MJ wanting to eventually swap songs out.

3 seconds of threatened not enough to call it "would have been worked into the interludes". for example if they cutted interlude from unbreakable (panther roar) to put it in the very beggining of the show and putted interlude of YRMW (with chris tucker) somewhere in set-list, then we would say Invincible have been worked into the interludes

The poll certainly wasn't the definitive decision on what was to be included, but I doubt it wasn't considered at all. I doubt Dirty Diana would've made the set at all if it weren't for the shear amount of votes it got. 17/20 of the top voted songs being included isn't too bad, though it would've definitely been interesting to see the other 3.

People should have voted harder for Who is It - I'd love to have seen that performed
It still survived in a very small form, there was a brief Who is It segment just before Dangerous. Would definitely have preferred it if he just performed the song though instead of going into the 1000th variation of Dangerous lol.

Again off topic but wikipedia has this for the HIStory tour

If this is true and not made up wikipedia style then those possible rehearsal tapes include some interesting stuff!
This makes state of shock rehearsed for the Victor6 tour and HIStory tour
But you know what I don’t believe it one bit lol

This is true. No idea if any of them were rehearsed with Michael though or if it was just the band, but those were the songs being rehearsed by the end of July 96 (not incl. Morphine ofc). The songs were all originally rehearsed in their entirety too, the cut down arrangements of things like Scream and They Don't Care only came later on. By the end of August, the set list was pretty much identical to what debuted in Prague with the one exception of She's Out of My Life still being included, which was supposed to be between Billie Jean and Thriller.

He needed to rehearse new songs and then he also had to conceive concepts. Even if that included just standing there and singing.

I understand the concept of singing your old songs, but why not do something different? “Never Can Say Goodbye,” “Can You Feel It,” “Blame It on the Boogie,” anything. The J5 Medley is so tired and boring at this point.
Lmao you're saying that as if he is still doing them till this day

Imagine the this is it our going ahead and MJ surprising us and the world with an entire new album being performed live for the first time. Then after the residency ends release the studio album. That would have been cool

And ok ok lunatics he would also perform beat it, earth song, the Motown medley and billie jean as an encore each shows so you an all sleep well ;-)
