Sony Music has agreed to purchase half of Michael Jackson’s publishing and recorded masters catalog in a deal valued at over $1.2 billion.

It is unclear if this the deal that Katherine Jackson tried to blocked in court all last year. All court documents have been blocked out and under seal. A source close to the deal has mentioned that Michael’s three children have signed it off against Katherine’s wish.

Katherine is very old and in pretty poor health from what we've heard. I'm sure she's had a stroke?

I doubt she is capable of making any decision or blocking the estate. It's obviously come from people acting on her behalf.

What was the drama a few years ago about a few of the brothers saying she had been kidnapped and they weren't allowing some of the kids to see her?
 
I don’t know, from what I’ve read and understood this is actually a really good deal for MJ estate. They get a massive record breaking lump sum and still have a say in things. This also benefits MJ’s kids as they‘re not burdened with all the responsibilities of something they are not fully interested in and they gain even more financial wealth. Correct?

I find that disrespectful
 
Dispite not liking this deal due to MJs own words and battles with Sony. Times are changing, music is changing, Michael has past for 15 years and I doubt holding on to all rights and responsibilities regarding the catalogue forever might not be as interesting.

All the stuff related to the estate should be for his kids and if this deals is as good as some here describe it and if the kids gave permission, then I guess hopefully it was a good choice. At least they got a decent sum of money out of it.

Exactly, Michael Isn't here anymore and if his kids are happy with the deal then I guess that's what matters the most now. They don't seem to be interested in running the Estate and the HUGE amount money they will get from this is enough for them to never have to worry about money ever, even their grand grand children and so forth will be rich just from this deal alone.
 
It's interesting and very predictable how people just assume a lot of things. Katherine has nothing to lose by fighting for what's morally right to honour Michael.

"A source close to the deal" saying Michael’s children have signed it off doesn't necessarily say very much. Not protesting and saying yes are very different things.
 
Reminder - Michael worked with Sony in 2008 for Thriller 25. Willingly. Not just a repackage of the album. Not just tacked on outtakes.

Newly commissioned remixes with new vocals, with MJ enthusiastically embracing magazine covers and interviews - something he hadn't done in years.

MJ's relationship with Sony was "complicated".

15+ years ago. There is absolutely no knowing what Michael Jackson would want in 2024, were he still alive. Every major artist is selling their catalog. Full selling their catalog. And not keeping 51 % like the estate does. People should stop pretending to know what Michael would want and stop to pretend to know better.
 
Well, Michael mainly made his last concert deal to prevent having to sell his assets... so he died trying to prevent it.

I think we can be pretty confident that were Michael still here, he'd be buying catalogs not selling them.

Not to mention Number Ones, The Essential, The Ultimate Collection, Visonary and King of Pop compilations all in MJ’s lifetime.
