HIStory 30th Anniversary

Album Rewind: Michael Jackson - HIStory: Past, Present, Future - Book I

Where's the 30th anniversary release?

With everything going on in the world, I think it’s fitting that I take a step back and review an old, (maybe underrated), legendary album. This week, Michael Jackson’s HIStory: Past, Present, Future - Book I turns 30. In a very sad kind of way, this album holds up exceptionally well.

8 Michael Jackson Songs That Are Still Incredibly Relevant Today
"Beat It"
"Man In The Mirror"
"Black Or White"
"They Don't Care About Us"
"Earth Song"
"Money"
"Tabloid Junkie"

"The Lost Children"

And another post! The Estate has rarely been as committed as it was to HIStory's 30th anniversary. I'm really excited to see what else they have in store for us. Something big is sure to come. A huge disappointment.
Earth Song Was The Second Song From The HIStory Album to Debut At #1
June 23, 2025
“Earth Song” was the third single from the HIStory album, released November 7th, 1995. This became the second single from the album to debut at #1 on a major chart, this time on the UK Singles Chart. It was the #1 song through the Christmas season into early 1996 in the UK, and it hit #1 position in Iceland, Lithuania, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland, peaking within the top five in almost every European country.

On This Anniversary of Michael’s Passing, The Title Track From Michael Jackson’s HIStory Is An Inspiring Anthem
June 25, 2025
On the anniversary of Michael’s passing, the message of the title track for the HIStory album is an appropriate moment to listen to this inspiring anthem calling out to its listeners to try and make the world a better place through their everyday actions – a message that is important to Michael and his own legacy. https://www.michaeljackson.com/news...hael-jacksons-history-is-an-inspiring-anthem/

HIStory Turns 30: The Album That Fought Back

Despite the tabloid entanglements, Jackson’s star power continued to be intact. HIStory: Past, Present, and Future Book I debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 chart, selling over 391,000 copies in its first week. He embarked on his HIStory World Tour in the fall of 1996 and it went on to become one of the highest grossing tours of the year.
30 years later, the album stands as a bold statement of respect by Jackson to the tabloid naysayers who threatened to destroy his legacy.

- Matt Forger says he filmed MJ record the fifth take of Smile (the one on the album.)
- Rob Hoffman seated next to MJ, and the guitarist, when they recorded Much Too Soon. MJ sung directly at the console with the mic plugged in. They did about 5 takes.
- Rob doesn't remember flying to Minnesota to re-record MJ vocals for Scream after Janet did hers.

Really good interview, only watched the first 30 minutes so far.

Awesome! 🔥

Rob Hoffman at approx 1 hr:
"... Bruce and René ... we were working on 2Bad ... and a lot of other tracks that nobody's ever heard before, just to fuel the rumour mill, there's probably 20 René songs out there, maybe more ..."

This is interesting, too. Just watched the first 15 minutes so far.

I don't think it's entirely about MJ, though.

This is a nice companion to the other video but, omg, this is really techie! They are just geeking out. I'm at 30 mins and now I need to take a break, lol. They mention Bruce Swedien more than they mention Michael. Bruce is their hero and master! :D

The MJ chat starts at approx 5m 50s, at 30m they seem to be moving on to other stuff.

Tony does say that all of Michael's albums were innovative.

Awesome! 🔥

After the one hour mark, Matt Forger said he was the first person who ever heard and recorded Earth Song and TDCAU. At Westlake Studio C, prior to the Decade project becoming the Dangerous album.

That was such a good moment! I loved that anecdote from Matt. This whole video is pure gold from beginning to end but I think my two fave quotes might be:

Matt - "OK, there was a movie ... called 'My Favourite Year' ... I got to live that, in my own life"

Brad - "... the camaraderie, once you fit into that team and the trust was built and you've got Michael in the middle of it all ... I didn't want it to end ... I remember when that album started ticking down and I'm like, I do not want this to end, can we please do, you know, sides 3 and 4 and just keep going ..."

I think it’s funny how the subtitle of the estates latest posts basically is: yeah see History was really great and important to MJ and also very successful and had many hits BUT we don’t want to do anything about it 😂
Sounds like their message is "Go listen to HIStory. And if you don't have it, go buy a copy!"

Isn't that the right message?!

The message is good, but what should the 20 million people who already have it do?

No.. the message is:

Go listen and buy HIStory! It’ll make us more rich while we upload LQ pictures from google page 1 to our socials.

I don't understand.

The important part is listening to the songs. If you already have the album then you're good to go.

It's the classic path of least resistance. They already did the work when the album was released in 1995. They don't need to go anything else.

Seriously, just go listen. It's a great album.

Profit maximization is the goal of a company to maximize its profit, that is, to increase the difference between revenue and costs. This is achieved by either increasing revenue or reducing costs, or by a combination of both, as we see with HIStory: advertising costs approach zero while album sales continue to perform well.

Ok.

I’ll take everything back.
God save the estate and Mr Branca. Best estate ever

The Estate is unstoppable!🐌
Michael Jackson’s “2 Bad” Co-Writer / Co-Producer Dallas Austin On Working With Michael
June 27, 2025
“2 Bad” is another fierce funk workout from the HIStory album. Dallas Austin who co-wrote and co-produced the track remarked that “Working with Michael is a different type of work. You’re pressured timewise, but not by creativity or money. So, you’re left with mad freedom. You’d think he’d be very controlling, but if he likes you enough to work with you, he wants your expertise, not just another Michael Jackson record.”

And before we get to the Top 15 most viewed Michael Jackson short films on YouTube, let’s talk about the fan campaign to put the HIStory album back on the charts.

We’ve been here before, haven’t we? Fans mass-streaming a song or album doesn’t make much difference to the charts—we learned this from past campaigns. Oh, and I say “campaign” deliberately, not “event,” because as an Event Manager, I get so offended when people use “event” to mean pushing a hashtag on social media. It’s a marketing campaign. The right terminology matters to me here! LOL.

Anyway, yes—without support from the general public, without genuine interest in Michael’s music, getting him back at the top of the charts is pretty much impossible. As much as I wish all the fans could unite behind a common goal (in this case, Michael), the reality is more complicated. The vanity of some fans unfortunately gets in the way. BUT—and that’s a bold “but”—this campaign was really nice. Seeing HIStory-era graphics, people promoting Michael’s most personal album and facts, and helping new listeners discover it was amazing to see. I always say: if even one person discovers Michael and enjoys the music, it’s a win!

But the reality is, this campaign hasn’t put HIStory back on the charts, even digitally. Looking at different countries, it varies so much that it’s hard to see any real impact. Yes, the #HIStory30 hashtag did peak from time to time in some countries. But to be honest—and as a Marketing Director once told me—hashtags aren’t really valued anymore in the social media and influencer worlds.

As Jacked As It Sounds: 30 Years Later, 'HIStory' Proves Michael Jackson Right

Michael Jackson’s 1995 album, "HIStory: Past, Present, Future Book 1," foreshadowed America's 21st-century sociopolitical issues and celebrity obsession in the wake of a 24-hour news cycle.
