19 Feb08: MJ news and mentionings

why not look at the glass 1/2 full instead of 1/2 empty...

such there were TONS of cds left everywhere because hardly anyone was buying it............??? wouldn't that be worst...

getting in the top 5 is a trumph :punk: for Michael .. celebrate it..

take the monkey off your back...

Exactly :flowers:

Thanks for the news, Rasta Pasta and hopespringeternal. :) The T25 cd looks like it is doing very well. We will know by tommorrow the final tallies and then it will be published on Thursday. That is according to a posteron here who said that. I mean, look at this - here is a man who people called a "has been" that "no one in AMERICA would support him" well, look at him now!
Yes, this is fantastic. it is even sweeter because this is the American public voting with their feet and money supporting MJ. I hope the media will take note. I am relly happy for the position he is in but it would have been a real kick in the face of all the you know who's if he had got the number 1 spot.:)

Dats please read my above post where i explain why it couldn't be no.1 regardless of sales.

The glass is 9/10 full. I just feel that it could have been at the brim if more people were able to buy the darn thing. That is how I feel. I shall be celebrating like the rest of you, but I can't help feeling that it could have been sweeter with the number one spot exp when we were so close to it.:)
I don't have no monkey on my back, but pardon me if I don't feel too good when I hear how many people are turned away because they couldn't get the record and we just got tipped at the post by someone who had all the albums in the store.

Anyone else notice that Billboard revised their answer (re: Thriller 25 sales) last week compared to what they had originally stated?

Ask Billboard - February 08, 2008

Keith,

With three versions of Michael Jackson's "Thriller 25" on sale next week (Feb. 12), how will overall sales of the album be calculated?

Checking on Amazon.com's top seller list, it looks like each version of the album is counted separately in their overall sales chart, as they have different SKUs.

How will Nielsen SoundScan do the math? And taking it even one step further, will sales of the anniversary album added to the overall sales of the original album, bringing it a step closer in overtaking the Eagles' greatest hits album (as the best selling album of all time in the U.S.)?

Hi Joseph,

All of the expanded versions of "Thriller" will have their sales combined with the existing sales of the original 1982 album. At the end of the day, there will only be one number to represent the sales of "Thriller."

This is not unusual. Many albums are reissued with bonus content from a few months after the original album's release to many years later. For the most part, Billboard and Nielsen SoundScan will have the sales of the various permutations of an album merged together.

Ask Billboard - REVISED ANSWER February 12, 2008

Hi Joseph,

All of the 2008 expanded versions of "Thriller" will have their sales combined. (This column was updated on Feb. 12 to reflect new information.)
They removed all references to the original claim that the Thriller 25 sales will be combined with the original Thriller album sales.

COME ON!! Who would have thought an album over 2 decades old would enter the TOP TEN ANYWHERE??

This is probably the first time in history.. (maybe not) But it very well could be...

I don't think there is anything different that the original intent there is more than one version of T25 out there and ultimately it comes down to how soundscan counts it anyway, for example soundscan always had a total for Thriller Original and a total for Thriller special editon so i think this will be more of the same with a total for T25 and when people ask how much Thriller has sold they will be all apart of one giant number.

This was a great effort by Michael and those working with him. He should be proud and so should all of his fans. He has truly created something lasting, inspiring, and yet-still very modern.

That's soooo funny

yeah lol it's RIDICULOUS. I find all the facts for Thriller 50 funny. LOL. Yes, even the one about plastic surgery. It was inevitable, right?

P.S. I just thought - wouldn't it be COOL if MJ's new album was called Legacy?

That's strange when you think about it, lol.

But whenever anyone asks how much it has scanned in the soundscan era all of the editions are added together, i know it seems strange and confusing it is what it is though i mean now you have artists who release a album then come back months later and put out a deluxe editon with extras and soundscan counts both versions together.

True. How many copies has the Thriller Special Edition sold?

I know RP, but My Large ego couldn't help feeling that if they hadn't ran short in the shops more albums would have been sold and could make all the difference between a 1 and 2 position. Could you imagine the uproar in America if MJ made a no1 with a 25 year old album:eek: I want to see some people go 'splat' and I would be disappointed if we missed out because of shortages.^_^

you didn't miss out. the grammys went 'splat' in the ratings.

edit...oh..i read more of ur post...you wanna see MORE people go splat. ok..lol

But I do think that TSCM's observations is a good one. If they are keeping count of the different versions, are they all being added up and counted towards the original recorded release?

More importantly, which VERSION of Thriller is being counted in this week's soundscan numbers?

I usually ditch my Billboard mag, but when I get my copy this week, I will review ALL of the charts.

By my estimation, Thriller, as a catalog piece, should be at #1 on cat charts.

We will know tomorrow where T-25 ranks on Billboard's early release chart announcement.

T-25 will be no.1 on the catalog chart, i think because you could buy more one version of T25 that Billboard wanted to reassure that all versions will be counted, clearly it's going to be the only one available now as i have learned looking at amazon that SONY has already deleted 2001 edition, much like the way they deleted the original editon when the 2001 version came out back in 01; you can only get the used copies of both versions that sellers post or what is left of it in stores because T25 will be the only version available from now on. Ultimately all versions will be added to the original total before the pre-Soundscan era which is what we see when it's now ranked at having sold 27 million in the USA.

Fantastic news about Thriller I'm so happy right now, even my sister (not MJ fan) asked me today if I knew about Thriller 25 I said "yes I bought it Monday" she replied " can you bring it over next time you come", I was , concidering I can't even mention Michael in her presence I found it quite scary .

Hell yes for Thriller 25! For this album to come in at number #2 is amazing! Congrats to Michael and Sony!

BTW....who is Jack Johnson, never heard of him.....

^^ Yup! No 2 in the US for T25 is amazing.

Jack Johnson is a good artist, his first album did (still is) doing very well. I like him kinda laid back guitar stuff.

This is terrific news, and hopefully this will give a small (or big, depending what they need), wake up slap to some people who have underestimated Michael Jackson's continueing relevance and popularity.

This is a 25 year old album. No 2 position in the US, and top 3 positions all over the world!? This is crazy, and I don't think Sony could have anticipated this degree of success at all. I don't think many people could have actually LOL!

This bodes well for the new album whenever it lands, and with even better promotion than what T25 recieved, MJ will once again reign over the music world.

Congrats Michael! You deserve this success!! xxx
(Also congrats to Jack Johnson, someone who beats MJ to the number 1 spot deserves credit also! He is V.good)

Rasta Pasta! thanks for posting the news, I know I was suppose to but I was too ill last night to manage it so thanks for doing the awesome job you always do :flowers:

Do your thang, Thriller 25! Up! Up! UP!

Congrats, Michael!! Hope you're enjoying what you're seeing! :flowers:

This is truly amazing. If a 25 year old album can reach number two in the United States and be in the top 3 in the rest of the world, then one can only imagine what a new album will do. Michael always has been and always will be the man.

#2 in the US with 157,000 copies sold!

"Brushfire/Universal Republic’s Jack Johnson returns to #1 again this week, with a total of 170k, followed by the debut of Michael Jackson’s Sony Legacy 25th anniversary re-package of Thriller at #2 with 157k."

Johnson Remains No. 1; Winehouse, Hancock Soar

February 20, 2008, 11:00 AM ET
Katie Hasty, N.Y.

In a slow week for new releases, Jack Johnson's "Sleep Through the Static" remains No. 1 on The Billboard 200 for a second week, despite a 52% sales slide. The Brushfire effort sold 180,000 copies in the U.S., according to Nielsen SoundScan.

The bigger news is significant jumps for artists who appeared on the Feb. 10 Grammy Awards, led by top winner Amy Winehouse. Her Universal Republic set "Back to Black" bounces back into the top 10 in a big way, zooming up 24-2 for a new charting high and sales week with 115,000. Winehouse led the Grammy field with five wins.

Album of the year winner Herbie Hancock's "River: The Joni Letters" (Verve) explodes 159-5, with a 967% bump to 54,000, while Foo Fighters' "Echoes, Silence, Patience and Grace" (Roswell/RCA) climbs 65-22 with 33,000 (+160%). Kanye West's "Graduation" (Roc-A-Fella/Def Jam) ascends 64-40 with a 74% gain, selling 23,000.

"As I Am" (J) by Alicia Keys, who performed twice at the ceremony, stays put at No. 3 for a second week with 109,000 (+36%). The "2008 Grammy Nominees" compilation climbs a notch 5-4 with 72,000, a 40% increase.

Back on The Billboard 200, the Rhino soundtrack to "Juno" holds tight at No. 6 with 53,000 (+13%), while Taylor Swift's Big Machine self-titled album ascends 10-7 with 52,000 (+35%). Also moving 52,000, Sheryl Crow's "Detours" (A&M/Interscope) falls 2-8 with a 44% sales hit.

Mary J. Blige's Matriarch/Geffen album "Growing Pains" slips 6-7 with 49,000 (+9%) as Atlantic's soundtrack to the film "Step Up 2" steps up 13-10, moving 45,000 units with a 44% increase.

Considering its status as a catalog release, the new 25th anniversary reissue of Michael Jackson's "Thriller" (Epic/Legacy) was ineligible to chart on The Billboard 200 this week. But it does bow at No. 1 on the Top Pop Catalog Albums tally after selling 166,000. The project includes reworked "Thriller" tracks by Akon, Kanye West, Fergie and will.i.am.

Only two other albums bow inside the top 50. Simple Plan's self-titled Lava/Atlantic album starts at No. 14 with 39,000, and the "WOW Gospel 2008" multi-label compilation debuts at No. 34 with 28,000.

Sales this week are up 16.1% from last week at 9.78 million units and down 11.6% from the same week last year.
